The Lawrence University hockey team takes on Lake Forest College in a home-and-home series this weekend. The Vikings host Lake Forest on Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center, and Lawrence travels to Lake Forest on Saturday for the regular-season finale. The games have playoff implications for both teams, and Lawrence is currently holding down the final spot for the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs.

Finlandia tops Lawrence 5-1
HANCOCK, Mich. — Sean Burke and Travis Armstrong each scored a pair of goals as Finlandia University beat Lawrence University 5-1 in a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association game on Saturday at the Houghton County Arena.
The Lions swept the weekend series after winning Friday night’s game 4-3 in overtime.
Finlandia (7-16-0, 7-11-0 MCHA) jumped on top with Jordan Passino’s goal just 6:22 into the contest. The score stayed 1-0 until Burke scored 2:43 into the second period. He added another goal at the 7:43 mark for a 3-0 Finlandia lead. Armstrong then scored with 3:38 left in the second period for a 4-0 Finlandia advantage.
The Vikings (6-15-2, 5-11-2) finally got on the board when Phil Bushbacher scored on the power play at 10:52 of the third. Finlandia then added another goal when Armstrong scored after a delayed penalty on Lawrence.
Fabian Sivnert made nine saves for Lawrence before being replaced by Michael Baldino, who finished with 19 saves. Troy Chandler made 35 saves for Finlandia.
Lawrence had a 36-33 edge in shots on goal.
Finlandia tops Lawrence in overtime
HANCOCK, Mich. — Finlandia University scored in the final minute of regulation and went on to a 4-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association overtime win over Lawrence University on Friday at the Houghton Civic Center.
The Lions (6-16-0, 6-11-0 MCHA) tied the game at 3-3 when Cody Essel scored with an extra attacker on the ice for Finlandia. The Lions then won it on Cameron Goude’s goal 2:32 into overtime.
Lawrence (6-14-2, 5-10-2 MCHA) fell behind just 34 seconds into the game when Derek Rodgers scored for Finlandia. The Vikings tied the game at 1-1 on Brandon Boelter’s sixth goal of the season at the 3:53 mark of the first.
Senior forward Brad Scurfield gave Lawrence a 2-1 lead when he scored on the power play at the 9:46 mark of the second. The score stayed that way until Travis Armstrong scored for Finlandia at the 7:12 mark of the third to tie the game at 2-2.
Lawrence grabbed the lead back at 3-2 when freshman forward Logan Lemirande scored off a pass from Scurfield with 4:51 remaining in regulation. Finlandia pulled goaltender Troy Chandler with just under a minute left and Essel scored seven seconds later to tie the game and force the overtime.
Chandler made 37 saves for Finlandia, and Fabian Sivnert stopped 15 shots for Lawrence. The Vikings enjoyed a 40-19 edge in shots on goal.
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon.
Lawrence at Finlandia series preview

Last-second goal gives Marian 3-2 win over Lawrence
FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Tyler Klein scored a power-play goal with eight seconds left to lift Marian University to a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Saturday night at the Blue Line Ice Center.
Lawrence’s Rudi Pino had been sent off for hooking with 19 seconds remaining in regulation, and Klein scored 11 seconds later off an assist from Dakota Dubetz.
The win gave Marian a sweep of the weekend Battle of Highway 41 series, and the Sabres took back possession of the traveling trophy that goes to the series winner.
Lawrence (6-13-2, 5-9-2 MCHA) had built a 2-0 lead after two periods. Freshman forward Logan Lemirande scored just 1:18 into the first period to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Freshman forward Ryan Rumble then scored at the 9:29 mark of the second period off assists from Lemirande and Huck Saunders for a 2-0 lead.
Marian (10-10-1, 9-7-0) started its comeback with a power-play goal from Brian Berger at the 6:14 mark of the third period. The Sabres tied the game at 2-2 just 1:38 later when Klein scored off an assist from Tom Glomski.
Josh Baker made 36 saves to pick up the win for Marian. Fabian Sivnert stopped 39 shots and took the loss for the Vikings.
Marian takes opener in Battle of Highway 41 series
APPLETON, Wis. — Marian University scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the second period and went on to a 3-1 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
The game was part of the Battle of Highway 41 series, and Lawrence currently has possession of the traveling trophy after sweeping the series a season ago. All Marian needs is a tie on Saturday night at the Blue Line Ice Center to take back the trophy.
Lawrence’s Phil Bushbacher tied the game at 1-1 when he scored a power-play goal off a pass from Brad Scurfield just 3:03 into the second period.
Mitch Kriz gave Marian (9-10-1, 8-70 MCHA) a 2-1 edge when he scored at the 10:51 mark of the second. The Sabres quickly made it 3-1 when Brett Campbell scored at the 16:07 mark.
Neither team was able to score in the final period, as goaltender Josh Baker stopped all 10 of Lawrence’s shots in the final 20 minutes. Baker finished with 41 saves as Lawrence (6-12-2, 5-8-2) enjoyed a 42-33 edge in shots on goal.
Fabian Sivnert made 30 saves for Lawrence.
The win also puts Marian four points ahead of the Vikings in the MCHA standings with five games left to play in the regular season.

Big third period pushes Lumberjacks past Lawrence
APPLETON, Wis. — Northland College scored three times in the third period to rally for a 4-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
Mike Lennon scored two of the three goals for Northland (7-11-1, 5-9-0 MCHA) in the first 8:14 of the third period.
Lawrence (6-11-2, 5-7-2 MCHA) led 2-1 entering the final period, but Louis Labbe’s goal tied it for Northland just 1:57 into the third.
Rudi Pino was then whistled for roughing the goaltender at the 5:30 mark to put Northland on the power play. The Lumberjacks converted on Lennon’s goal at the 6:34 mark to take a 3-2 lead. Northland made it 4-2 when Lennon scored again at the 8:14 mark.
Lawrence battled back freshman forward Renato Engler weaved past a pair of Northland defenders and zinged a wrist shot past Mason Riley to cut the lead to 4-3 with 4:52 remaining.
Northland’s Kraig Wright was then whistled for hooking with 2:55 left to put the Vikings on the power play. Lawrence got five shots on goal during the power play but couldn’t get the equalizer. The Vikings pulled goaltender Fabian Sivnert for an extra attacker with 1:25 left but didn’t get another shot on net.
Lawrence took a 1-0 lead when Pino scored just 2:57 into the first period. The Vikings made it 2-0 on Patrick Coyne’s goal at the 15:58 mark of the first. The Lumberjacks cut the lead to 2-1 when Austin Southerland scored at the 15:28 mark of the second.
Riley made 47 saves as Lawrence posted a season-high 50 shots on goal. Sivnert stopped 29 shots for Lawrence.
Early goals lead Lawrence to victory over Northland
APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University hockey team scored early in both the first and second periods and went on to a 4-1 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Northland College on Friday at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
The Vikings (6-10-2, 5-6-2 MCHA) scored in the game’s first two minutes and then added two goals in the first 3:20 of the second period to take control.
Goaltender Fabian Sivnert made 25 saves to pick up the victory for the Vikings. Mason Riley stopped 44 shots for the Lumberjacks (6-11-1, 4-9-0 MCHA) and took the loss.
Freshman forwards Rudi Pino and Renato Engler had a hand in both of Lawrence’s first two goals. Pino scored off a pass from Engler just 1:56 into the game to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
Lawrence made it 2-0 just 21 seconds into the second period when another freshman forward, Matt Moore, scored off assists from Pino and Engler. The Vikings stretched the lead to 3-0 at the 3:20 mark when Patrick Coyne scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Paul Zuke.
Northland tried to get back into the game when Jamieson Webking’s goal cut the lead to 3-1 with 4:46 remaining in the final period. Lawrence answered with a goal from Phil Bushbacher just 33 seconds later to seal the victory.
Lawrence posted a 48-26 edge in shots on goal.
The teams wrap up the series Saturday afternoon.
