The Lawrence University hockey team returns to Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play when it travels to eighth-ranked Adrian College for games on Friday and Saturday.

Vikings shoot down Auggies with overtime shutout
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Matt Hughes’ overtime goal lifted the Lawrence University hockey team to a 1-0 nonconference victory over Augsburg College on Saturday at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Hughes’ goal, his team-high ninth of the season, came 2:40 into the five-minute overtime off assists from Brad Scurfield and Erik Soderlund.
Lawrence (5-5-3) had been on the power play in the overtime period when Augsburg’s Ben McClellan got sent off for slashing at 1:48. The man-advantage lasted only 13 seconds when Paul Zuke was whistled for interference.
The Vikings kept up the pressure with a shot by Hughes blocked by a defenseman and a Soderlund saved by the goaltender. Hughes then regained control of the puck and beat Justin Lochner for the only goal of the game.
Lawrence freshman goaltender Peter Emery picked up the first shutout of his career by making 40 saves. Lochner stopped 30 shots for Augsburg (4-7-0).
This was Lawrence fourth overtime game of the season with the previous three all ending in ties. This was Lawrence’s first win in an overtime game since a 4-3 win over Finlandia University on Jan. 16, 2010. Lawrence is 2-1-5 in the eight overtime games dating back to the win over Finlandia.
Lawrence returns to action next weekend when it travels to the 2011 NCAA runner-up, Adrian College.
Scoring burst pushes Auggies past Lawrence
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Augsburg College hockey team scored four consecutive goals to pull away and post a 9-4 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Lawrence (4-5-3) trailed only 4-3 midway through the second period when Augsburg (4-6-0) scored twice before the end of the second period and two more times in the first 6:35 of the third to pull away.
The Vikings cut the lead to 4-3 on Brad Scurfield’s goal at 9:53 of the second. John Lennartson countered for Augsburg at 11:29, and Thomas Paine scored at 18:41 to stake the Auggies to a 6-3 lead after two periods.
Paine scored again just 2:07 into the third period, and Lennartson added a power-play goal at 6:35 to give Augsburg an 8-3 edge.
Lennartson finished the night with four goals, and Paine had a pair.
Ben DiMarco scored at 9:36 to cut the lead to 8-4, but Augsburg got its second goal of the night from Trevor Doden to complete the scoring.
John Bretzman made 32 saves and got the win for Augsburg. Freshman Adam Eno played the first 46:35 and took the loss. He made 29 saves and allowed eight goals.

Coyne named MCHA Freshman of the Week
Lawrence University standout Patrick Coyne has been named the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Freshman of the Week.
Coyne (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), a rookie forward, had a hand in all three goals in Lawrence’s only action of the week. In a 5-3 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College on Dec. 10, Coyne picked up a goal and two assists.
Coyne posted a season-high three points against the Gusties and had his third multi-point game of the season. Coyne scored his third goal of the season and the two assists was a season high.
Coyne now has three goals and four assists for seven points in only six games this season.
Lawrence is now 4-4-3 and returns to action with a nonconference series at Augsburg College on Dec. 30-31.
Gusties hold on to down Lawrence
The Gustavus Adolphus College hockey team held off a late charge by Lawrence University on Saturday and hung on for a 5-3 nonconference victory over the Vikings at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
Adam Smyth scored four times, including a natural hat trick, to pace Gustavus Adolphus (6-4-2). Lawrence (4-4-3) scored twice in the third period to trim the Gustavus lead to 4-3, but the Gusties got an empty-net goal in the final minutes to seal the win.
Gustavus took the lead just 1:31 into the game, and Lawrence finally tied it at 1-1 on Phil Bushbacher’s goal at the 6:11 mark of the second period.
Smyth then started his scoring barrage with a power-play goal at the 12:46 mark of the second. He made it 3-1 when he scored 59 seconds later. Smyth got the hat trick with another power-play goal at the 15:47 mark to give the Gusties a 4-1 edge.
Bushbacher picked up his second goal of the night when he scored at the 8:04 mark of the third period to cut the lead to 4-2. Patrick Coyne, who had two assists on the afternoon, then scored off a pass from Bushbacher at the 15:43 mark to trim the margin to 4-3.
Lawrence pulled goaltender Peter Emery with 2:00 left, but Smyth picked up an empty-net goal 21 seconds later to seal the victory.
Emery made 24 saves and took the loss. John McLean stopped 28 shots for the Gusties to pick up the win.

Vikings power past Finlandia
HANCOCK, Mich. — Matt Hughes and Sam Johnson each scored a pair of goals, and the Lawrence University hockey team powered to a 5-1 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Finlandia University on Saturday.
The victory allowed Lawrence (4-3-3, 4-1-3 MCHA) to split the weekend series with the Lions (1-9-0, 1-7-0).
Finlandia struck first with a goal just 3:52 into the game, but that’s all the Lions would get against goaltender Peter Emery. He finished with 24 saves to pick up the win.
Defenseman Jameson Raymond tied the game just 2:04 later off assists from Hughes and Brad Scurfield. Hughes then scored on the power play at the 14:25 mark of the first to give Lawrence a 2-1 edge.
Johnson made it 3-1 when he scored only 23 seconds into the second period. Johnson got the next goal as well, on the power play at the 5:10 of the third period, to put the Vikings up 4-1.
Lawrence went 2-for-5 on the power play, and Finlandia was 0-for-8 against the Vikings’ penalty killers.
Hughes finished the scoring with his second goal of the night just 57 seconds later.
Lawrence peppered two Finlandia goalies with 35 shots. Dainis Vasiljevs started the game and took the loss for the Lions.
Finlandia downs Lawrence in penalty-filled game
HANCOCK, Mich. — The Finlandia University hockey team scored four times in the final period on Friday and went on to post a 6-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University.
Finlandia (1-8-0, 1-6-0 MCHA) led 2-1 entering the final period but scored three times in the first six minutes of the third to seal the victory.
Finlandia grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second period, but Brad Scurfield cut the lead in half when he scored with 1:20 left in the second period for Lawrence (3-3-3, 3-1-3).
Just seven second later, the game was halted by an altercation that resulted in 25 penalties totaling 114 minutes. Lawrence was whistled for 23 penalties for 100 minutes, and Finlandia had 16 penalties for 68 minutes.
Collin Saint-Onge scored at 1:02 of the third period, and Griffen Hodges at 3:11 to give Finlandia a 4-1 edge. Matt Hughes countered with a goal for the Vikings at the 3:53 mark to cut the lead to 4-2.
Clancy MacNeill then scored for the Lions at 5:41, and Finlandia added an empty-net goal in the final minute to complete the scoring.
Finlandia scored six goals only 24 shots. Peter Emery allowed the first four goals and took the loss. Adam Eno saw his first collegiate action for the Vikings and allowed one goal.
Dainis Vasiljevs stopped 23 shots to pick up the win for Finlandia.
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon.
