Winslow’s hot shooting earns MWC Player of the Week award

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University men’s basketball standout Pete Winslow put together a hot shooting weekend and earned Midwest Conference Player of the Week honors.

Winslow (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), a senior guard/forward, shot a blistering 76.9 percent from 3-point range to lead Lawrence to a pair of Midwest Conference victories. This is the first time Winslow has been honored, and the first time a Lawrence player has been selected this season.

Winslow went 10-for-13 from beyond the arc and hit a career-high five 3-pointers in both games as Lawrence defeated Cornell College and Illinois College. Winslow had never made more than three 3-pointers in a game.

In a 60-56 win over Cornell, Winslow went 5-for-6 on 3-pointers and finished 7-for-10 overall on his way to 19 points. He also added five rebounds and a steal against the Rams.

In a 63-54 win over Illinois College, Winslow was 5-for-7 on 3-pointers and 6-for-10 overall as he scored 17 points. Winslow added five rebounds, one assist and one steal against the Blueboys.

For the week, Winslow averaged 18 points and five rebounds per game while shooting 65 percent from the floor.

Lawrence (6-6, 6-2 MWC), winners of four straight, returns to action on Wednesday when the Vikings host Lake Forest College at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Week Ahead: January 16-22

APPLETON, Wis. — The Vikings will all be on the road this weekend as the teams get deep into the heart of the winter season. Lawrence University basketball hosts Lake Forest College on Wednesday, and the Vikings then travel to Beloit College on Saturday. Lawrence hockey travels north to St. Scholastica for a big Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series this weekend. The Lawrence swimmers get a preview of a Midwest Conference heavyweight when the Vikings travel to Lake Forest College on Saturday.

Fast Fact: Senior forward Pete Winslow might still be smoldering because he was on fire over the weekend. Winslow went 10-for-13 from 3-point range for a blistering 76.9 percent. Winslow went 5-for-6 on 3-pointers in the win over Cornell and was 5-for-7 in the victory over Illinois College.

Fast Fact: Lawrence forward Nick Felan broke a four-game scoreless streak in a big way this past weekend at Aurora. Felan assisted on both goals in Friday’s overtime tie and then scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in Lawrence’s 5-3 victory on Saturday.

Three-point shooting blitz sparks Lawrence victory over Blueboys

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team opened the second half Saturday with a 3-point shooting blitz, and that sparked the Vikings to a 63-54 Midwest Conference victory over Illinois College at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lawrence made its first five 3-point attempts and seven of its first eight in the opening five minutes of the second half to turn 10-point deficit into a five-point lead. The Vikings went 8-for-15 from beyond the arc in the second half.

Pete Winslow had his second consecutive hot shooting night for Lawrence (6-6, 6-2 MWC). Winslow went 6-for-10 from the floor, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range, to finish with 17 points. Winslow went 5-for-6 on 3-pointers in Friday’s win over Cornell to finish 10-for-13 from long distance in the two games.

Jeremy Stephani led Lawrence and all scorers with 23 points and added six rebounds and three assists with no turnovers in 34 minutes.

Mason Speer scored the first 11 points for Illinois College (3-10, 0-8) and finished with 22. Mitchell Patterson added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Blueboys.

Lawrence struggled mightily in the first half and trailed 30-20 at the break. After the Vikings missed the opening shot of the second half, Winslow grabbed the rebound and Stephani drained a 3-pointer.

That started a 21-6 outburst for the Vikings over the first 4:52 of the half. Winslow then hit a triple and rookie Quinn Fisher followed with another 3-pointer. Winslow then buried back-to-back 3-pointers before a miss by Stephani. Stephani came right back to hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Lawrence led 41-36.

Illinois College recovered and tied the game for the final time at 43-43 with 11:26 left. The Vikings then inched away as Illinois College missed its next five shots from the floor and committed a pair of turnovers.

Connor Weas went 4-for-4 from the foul line, and the Vikings got baskets from Winslow and Eric Weiss to build a 51-44 lead with 6:25 left.

The Blueboys closed to within 53-47 on a pair of Tim Parks free throws with 3:29 left, but Winslow countered by draining another 3-pointer. Speer made a very long 3-pointer to get the Blueboys to within 57-52, but the Vikings sealed the win at the foul line.

Lawrence made 6-of-8 free throws in the final 48 seconds and went 13-for-18 from the line in the second half.

Winslow’s 3-point barrage leads Lawrence past Rams

APPLETON, Wis. — Pete Winslow drained a career-high five 3-pointers Friday as the Lawrence University men’s basketball team rallied for a 60-56 Midwest Conference win over Cornell College at Alexander Gymnasium.

Winslow went 7-for-10 from the floor, including 5-for-6 from 3-point range to finish with a team-high 19 points. Ben Peterson added 12 points for the Vikings (5-6, 5-2 MWC), winners of three straight.

Jeremy Stephani added eight points for Lawrence and hit a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the second half, and Connor Weas had seven points with a pair of big 3-pointers in the first half.

Lawrence went 10-for-23 from beyond the arc. Cornell (5-7, 3-4) finished 4-for-20 from 3-point range after making three of its first four to start the game.

Corey Davis led the Rams with 20 points, including 16 in the first half. Grant Anderson added 15 points, and Lawrence held Cornell big man Jon Anderson to 13 points and eight rebounds.

Lawrence trailed 39-33 with 13 minutes left when Winslow drained back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 39-39. A layup by Winslow gave the Vikings a 41-39 advantage, Lawrence’s first lead since late in the first half.

After baskets by Grant and Jon Anderson put the Rams up 43-41, Stephani hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Lawrence a 47-43 lead with 7:05 left. The Rams battled back and tied it at 49-49 on Keegan Van Kooten’s jumper with 4:00 left.

Peterson, one the nation’s top 3-point shooters, then buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Vikings up for good at 52-49. Abhishek Venkatesh followed with a layup and the Vikings led by five.

After a pair of Davis free throws trimmed the margin to 54-51, Peterson got a pair of free throws and a layup to push Lawrence’s lead back to 58-51 with 59 seconds left. Stephani then hit two more free throws for a 60-51 lead with 42 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Vikings turn back Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team turned back Monmouth College Saturday and scored a 66-62 Midwest Conference victory at Glennie Gymnasium.

Ben Peterson led three Vikings in double figures with 14 points and hit 5-of-7 shots from the floor, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Jeremy Stephani added 12 points and Eric Weiss had 10 for the Vikings (4-6, 4-2 MWC). Mitch Willer chipped in with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for Lawrence.

Lamont Mitchell led Monmouth (2-9, 2-4) with 18 points and added eight rebounds but committed a key turnover in the final seconds.

Lawrence built its biggest lead at 58-47 on Stephani’s 3-pointer with eight minutes remaining, but the Scots kept chipping away at the lead.

Justin Aluya’s two free throws cut Lawrence’s lead to 61-58 with 2:50 remaining, but Weiss answered with a short jumper for Lawrence. Aluya added another free throw to cut the lead to 63-59 with 1:24 left.

Thanks to a missed shot and a turnover from both teams, the score stayed the same until Mitchell made two free throws with 34 seconds left to cut the lead to 63-61.

Lawrence’s Quinn Fisher was fouled but missed the front end of a bonus. The Vikings forced a Monmouth turnover, and Fisher was fouled again. He made one free throw with 14 seconds remaining to push the lead to 64-61.

Mitchell was fouled with eight seconds left but made just one free throw to cut the margin to 64-62. Peterson grabbed Mitchell’s miss and was fouled but missed the front end of the bonus to give Monmouth another chance.

Lawrence’s defense stymied Mitchell, who was called for a travel with four seconds remaining. Weiss then made a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Lawrence led from the opening minute, and the Vikings were up by as many as seven points in the first half. The Scots rallied and tied the game at 31-31 at the half.

The Vikings scored the first five points of the second half and led by as many as seven points before Monmouth rallied. The Scots went on a 9-0 run to take their only lead of the game at 45-43. Lawrence responded with a 12-0 as Peterson hit two 3-pointers and Weiss and Stephani each added a triple to give the Vikings a 55-45 advantage.

Vikings pull away late to turn back Knox

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team pulled away in the final five minutes Monday to post a 68-61 Midwest Conference victory over Knox College at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Vikings got a late 10-2 run featuring key baskets from Jeremy Stephani and Ben Peterson to take the lead and maintain control over a scrappy Knox squad.

Stephani led four Vikings (3-6, 3-2 MWC) in double figures with 15 points. Mitch Willer added a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Lawrence. Quinn Fisher picked up 13 points, and Pete Winslow added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Vikings.

Marko Protic scored 17 points to pace Knox (1-9, 1-4).

After 13 lead changes and six ties, Knox led 55-53 before Willer’s layup tied it with 5:06 left. Stephani then converted a critical three-point play to put the Vikings up 58-55 with 4:19 remaining.

The teams then traded a pair of free throws before Peterson buried a 3-pointer from the left wing very late in the shot clock to put Lawrence up 63-57 with 2:26 left. Peterson finished with nine points, going 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, and added five rebounds.

Jonathan Damota countered with a layup for the Prairie Fire, but Knox misfired on its next three shots and was forced to foul. Fisher went 4-for-5 from the line and Willer was 1-for-2 in the final 40 seconds to seal the victory.

Lawrence, playing its third game in five days, went 15-for-21 from the foul line for the game. Lawrence put together one of its best rebounding games of the season, and the Vikings were a plus-12 on the glass (41-29).

Lawrence swept the season series from the Prairie Fire, and the Vikings have now won 11 straight and 27 of the last 30 against Knox.
