Bohrer picks up MWC Player of the Week award

Lawrence University volleyball standout Clare Bohrer has been named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week.

Bohrer (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis), a junior middle hitter, turned in a great week as Lawrence posted a 2-1 record. The Vikings handed Monmouth College its first conference loss and also rallied to beat Illinois College.

In a 3-1 victory over Monmouth, which was 6-0 in the MWC, Bohrer had 18 kills and hit .389 for the match. Bohrer also had a school-record 12 blocks, breaking the record of 11 set by Kayte Hansen in 1999, three digs and two aces.

In a 3-2 victory over Illinois College, Bohrer had 20 kills, three blocks, three digs and a pair of aces. In a 3-0 loss at St. Norbert College, Bohrer had 11 kills, five digs and one block.

Bohrer, picking up MWC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career, piled up 49 kills, a .324 hitting percentage, 16 blocks, 11 digs and four aces for the week.

The Vikings (12-14, 3-4 MWC) return to action on Friday when they host Beloit College in a conference match at Alexander Gymnasium.

Vikings rally to top Illinois College in five sets

The Lawrence University volleyball team rallied to down Illinois College 3-2 in a Midwest Conference match on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lawrence won the opening set 25-20 before Illinois College won the next two sets 25-18 and 26-24. Lawrence then took the final two sets 25-17 and 15-12.

Clare Bohrer paced Lawrence (12-14, 3-4 MWC) with 20 kills, and Shannon McLain added 19 kills on an impressive .472 hitting percentage.

Diane McLeod piled up 44 assists for Lawrence and added 14 digs. Kathleen Rowland had a match-high 22 digs for the Vikings.

Kathleen Fox and Courtney Sweatman had 14 kills apiece to pace Illinois College (6-17, 2-7).

Vikings hand Monmouth first MWC loss

The Lawrence University volleyball team handed Monmouth College its first Midwest Conference loss as the Vikings posted a 3-1 victory Friday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Vikings won 25-13, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20.

Clare Bohrer collected 18 kills and Shannon McLain added 12 for Lawrence (11-14, 2-4 MWC). Bohrer also had five solo blocks and seven block assists.

Diane McLeod picked up 28 assists for the Vikings, and Kathleen Rowland had a team-high 13 digs.

Chelsey Widdop led Monmouth (17-9, 6-1) with nine kills and Claire Hermie added eight.

Lawrence volleyball to ‘Play for the Cure’

The Lawrence University volleyball team is hosting breast cancer awareness events during its matches in October. All matches are free and open to the public.

The Midwest Conference will honor National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) by launching the “Play for the Cure” campaign during select MWC volleyball games throughout the month of October.

The conference office is partnering with MWC volleyball teams, which will be wearing pink “Play for the Cure” T-shirts in pre-game warm-ups during select conference games.

“Midwest Conference volleyball coaches deserve all the credit for putting their enthusiasm and effort behind this initiative,” MWC Commissioner Chris Graham said. “We are pleased to be supporting awareness and fund-raising for such an important cause.”

The Lawrence volleyball team is hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness Day for the third consecutive year. The Vikings have been collecting donations on campus leading up to the event. Pink Lawrence volleyball t-shirts also will be offered for sale, and the Vikings will wear their pink jerseys during the match.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Appleton Medical Center Cancer Center.

Lawrence’s Play for the Cure matches are Saturday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m. vs. Illinois College and Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. vs. Beloit College.

Vikings fall to Ripon in four sets

RIPON, Wis. — The Lawrence University volleyball team won the first set on Wednesday, but Ripon College stormed back to win the next three and post a 3-1 Midwest Conference win at the Storzer Center.

Clare Bohrer led Lawrence with 10 kills, and Shannon McLain added nine. Diane McLeod had 28 assists for the Vikings, and Kathleen Rowland paced Lawrence with 28 digs.

Vikings sweep past Mount Mary

The Lawrence University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 nonconference victory over Mount Mary College on Tuesday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Vikings (9-11) defeated the Blue Angels (5-12) 25-13, 25-21, 25-23.

Clare Bohrer and Shannon McLain paced Lawrence with 12 kills apiece. Diane McLeod had a match-high 17 assists and picked up five kills.
