Green Knights take down Lawrence

DE PERE, Wis. — The St. Norbert College women’s basketball team got off to a fast start and went on to an 89-45 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Wednesday at Schuldes Sports Center.

Krista Pelky led St. Norbert (14-3, 12-0 MWC) with 21 points, and Jamie Kuhl added 20 points. Tasha Giese picked up a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Green Knights.

Chioma Ejimkonye paced the Vikings (1-15, 1-10) with 11 points, and Kassidy Rinehart added 10.

St. Norbert jumped out to a double-digit lead at 19-9 less than eight minutes into the game. The Green Knights increased that lead to 20 points with 6:52 left in the opening half. St. Norbert then went on a 17-3 to finish the half and led 52-21 at the break.

The Green Knights continued to gradually pull away in the second half and led by as many as 49 points in the second half.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Carroll University.

Grinnell tops Vikings

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College women’s basketball team pulled away midway through the first half and posted a 62-49 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Darby Gymnasium.

Rebecca DeGroot paced Grinnell (8-6, 7-3 MWC) with 17 points. Michelle Briggs had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Pioneers, and Megan Huey added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Amber Lisowe led Lawrence (1-14, 1-9) with 13 points. Alex Deshler, Chioma Ejimkonye and Cathy Kaye had 10 points apiece. Ejimkonye handed out a game-high seven assists, and Deshler had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Vikings played without leading rebounder Presley Neuman, and the Pioneers took advantage. Grinnell outrebounded the Vikings 49-36 and had three players with double figures in rebounds.

Grinnell led 10-8 when the Pioneers scored 15 consecutive points, capped by DeGroot’s layup with 6:34 left, to take a 25-8 lead. Kaye’s layup stopped the run by Grinnell, but the Pioneers went on to lead 33-18 at the half.

Lawrence got as close as 13 points on two occasions in the second half, and finally trimmed the lead to 11 at the 3:14 mark but got no closer.

Prairie Fire tops Lawrence

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Knox College women’s basketball team pulled away late in the first half and went on to a 98-80 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Friday night.

Krystyna Williams posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Knox (3-12, 3-7 MWC). Abby Owens added 17 points for the Prairie Fire.

Alex Deshler paced Lawrence (1-13, 1-8) with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds. Chioma Ejimkonye added 17 points for the Vikings, and Cathy Kaye had 11 points and nine rebounds.

After a pair of Deshler free throws trimmed Knox’s lead to 27-19 with 6:57 left in the opening half, the Prairie Fire pulled away. Knox went on a 32-11 run to finish the first half and led 59-30 at the half.

Lawrence was plagued by 26 turnovers in the first half and finished with 48 for the game.

The Vikings opened the second half by going on a 22-7 run and cut the lead to 66-52 on Deshler’s jumper with 13:36 remaining. Lawrence got as close as 13 points on a jumper by Ejimkonye with 11:16 left, but Knox countered with an 11-2 run to put the game out of reach.

Lawrence travels to Grinnell College for a game on Saturday afternoon.

Jones leads Monmouth past Vikings

Haley Jones was perfect from the floor on her way to a game-high 19 points and led the Monmouth College women’s basketball team to a 94-66 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Jones went 7-for-7 from the floor and connected on 5 of 7 free throws to pace Monmouth (7-6, 6-2 MWC). Marla Willard had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Kellen picked up 10 assists for the Scots.

Amber Lisowe led Lawrence (1-12, 1-7) with 19 points. Chioma Ejimkonye added 15 points and four steals, and Cathy Kaye had 13 points and six rebounds. Presley Neuman tied for game-high honors with 10 rebounds.

Monmouth jumped on the Vikings early and had a double-digit lead at 15-4 just 5:07 into the game. The Scots built that lead to as many as 20 points in the first half, but Lawrence trimmed the margin to 47-31 at the half.

The Scots poured it on early in the second half and went on a 28-6 run to open the half. Monmouth led 75-37 with 12:12 remaining in the contest. The Scots would go on to lead by as many as 45 points.

Lawrence returns to action on Jan. 20 when it travels to Knox College.

Cold shooting night dooms Vikings

The Lawrence University women’s basketball team had a frigid shooting night, and Grinnell College pulled away early and went on to a 62-35 Midwest Conference victory at Alexander Gymnasium on Friday night.

Lawrence hit only 17.5 percent (10-57) shots from the floor, including 5.3 percent (1-19) from beyond the 3-point line.

Grinnell jumped out to a double-digit lead just over seven minutes into the contest. The Pioneers led by as many as 32 points in the first half and were up 44-14 at the break.

Megan Huey paced Grinnell (6-5, 5-2 MWC) with 12 points and Kelly Clarke added 10. Michelle Briggs paced the Pioneers with 13 rebounds, and she added three blocks.

Alex Deshler had a double-double for Lawrence (1-11, 1-6) with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Presley Neuman was also in double digits with 10 rebounds.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Monmouth College.

Pioneers pull away from Lawrence

The Carroll University women’s basketball team broke open a close game early in the second half and went on to a 56-44 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Tuesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Janelle Groer led Carroll (3-8, 2-4 MWC) with 14 points, and Kelly Menden added 12. Breann Maryanski pulled down 11 rebounds for the Pioneers.

Chioma Ejimkonye paced Lawrence (1-10, 1-5) and all scorers with 19 points. Presley Neuman tied for game-high honors with 11 rebounds for the Vikings.

The game was tight throughout the first half, and Carroll went on a brief 8-1 scoring run to grab a 29-21 lead with 1:41 left in the opening 20 minutes. Lawrence trimmed that margin to 29-23 at the break.

Carroll then opened the second half by scoring the first eight points of the second half, including four by Menden, to take a 37-23 lead. Ejimkonye countered for Lawrence with a layup and a three-point play to trim the lead to 37-28 with 14:16 left.

Carroll responded by outscoring the Vikings 8-2 over the next five minutes to grab a 47-30 edge. Lawrence never got closer than the final margin the rest of the way.

The Vikings return to action on Friday when they host Grinnell College.
