Red Hawks hang on to down Lawrence

RIPON, Wis. — The Ripon College women’s basketball team held off a late rally by Lawrence University on Wednesday to post a 43-37 Midwest Conference victory over the Vikings at the Storzer Center.

Amber Lisowe paced Lawrence (0-3, 0-2 MWC) and all scorers with 12 points. Alex Deshler posted a double-double for the Vikings with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Kacie Cullen led Ripon (2-2, 1-0) with 11 points.

Ripon led 21-11 at the half but couldn’t expand its lead beyond 14 points after the break.

The Red Hawks led 42-31 on Jill Van Eperen’s jumper with 3:05 left when the Vikings rallied.

Jessica Robbins hit a jumper and Deshler followed with consecutive jumpers to trim the lead to 42-37 with 1:19 left. Ripon committed four turnovers in the same stretch.

The Vikings then missed back-to-back jumpers to allow Ripon to hang on for the win.

DePouw pours in 25 as Vikings edge Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — Ryan DePouw poured in a career-high 25 points to lead the Lawrence University men’s basketball team to a 78-76 Midwest Conference victory over Illinois College on Sunday at the Bruner Center.

DePouw hit on 9 of 13 shots from the floor, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. He added a game-high seven rebounds and picked up five assists, two blocks and a steal.

Chris Siebert added 16 points and Davis DeWolfe had 14 points for Lawrence (2-1, 1-0 MWC). Tyler Mazur, seeing his first significant action since football season ended, came off the bench to chip in with 12 points.

Nathan Kohler led Illinois College (1-3, 0-1) with 19 points, and Isaac Grapperhaus and Brandon Barry added 16 points apiece.

Illinois College led by as many as nine points in the first half, but Lawrence finished the first half on a 14-5 run to tie the score at 35-35 at the break. Mazur hit a pair of 3-pointers in that stretch, and DePouw and Siebert also had one apiece.

Lawrence came out strong to start the second half and led by as many as seven points before Illinois College battled back and took a one-point lead midway through the half.

The Vikings got the lead back on the next possession when Siebert drained a 3-pointer, and Illinois College would never lead again.

Lawrence led by as many as six points after that, but the Blueboys trimmed the margin to 74-72 with 1:18 remaining on Barry’s layup. Mazur got a three-point play for Lawrence to push the lead back to 77-72 with 47 seconds left.

The Vikings would miss the front end of the bonus on its next two possessions, and Kohler then hit a pair of free throws to cut the margin to 77-76 with four seconds left. The Blueboys fouled Siebert with three seconds left, and he made the first free throw to finish the scoring.

Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Ripon College.

Lady Blues take down Lawrence

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — The Illinois College women’s basketball team jumped out to a 12-point lead in the first five minutes and went on to a 78-62 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Sunday at the Bruner Center.

Hannah McGinnis scored 18 points and pulled down six rebounds to pace five Illinois College players in double figures.

Amber Lisowe paced Lawrence (0-2, 0-1 MWC) with 25 points and six rebounds, and Alex Deshler added 16 points for the Vikings.

Illinois College (2-2, 1-0) pulled out to a 16-4 lead on Tiffany King’s jumper with 15:10 left in the first half. The Lady Blues went on to lead by as many as 20 points in the first half, but the Vikings then went on a 12-4 run. Deshler’s 3-pointer capped the outburst and trimmed the lead to 41-29.

Illinois College would lead by 12 at the half, and the Lady Blues built the lead to as many as 28 points midway through the second half. Lawrence would score the game’s final 10 points to cut the margin back to 16 points.

The Vikings return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Ripon College.

Early deficit too much to overcome against St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. — For the second night in a row, the Lawrence University hockey team fell behind early and lost at the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association/Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Thanksgiving Classic at the Cornerstone Community Center.

Sixth-ranked St. Norbert College jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and went on a 6-3 nonconference win over the Vikings (2-6-0) on Saturday.

The Green Knights (8-2-1) scored three times in the first 9:52 before freshman defenseman Steve Hughes got his first career goal for the Vikings at the 11:10 mark to trim the lead to 3-1.

Carl Eckstrom then scored on the power play for St. Norbert, and the Green Knights led 4-1 after the opening period. St. Norbert converted 3 of 6 chances on the power play while Lawrence was 0-for-3.

Kyle Stroh pushed the St. Norbert lead to 5-1 with a goal in the second, but Lawrence battled back late in the third. Renato Engler and Derek Brickan scored just 46 seconds apart to cut the lead to 5-3 with 4:10 left.

Stroh then sealed the win and completed a hat trick with a power-play goal for St. Norbert with 3:27 left.

Travis Bosch made 24 saves to pick up the win, and Anton Olsson stopped 31 shots and took the loss.

Saints pull away early in win over Lawrence

DE PERE, Wis. — The College of St. Scholastic scored three goals in the first five minutes on Friday and rolled to a 9-2 nonconference victory over Lawrence University in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association/Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Thanksgiving Classic at the Cornerstone Community Center.

Brenden Kotyk and Brandon Nowakowski both had two goals and two assists to pace St. Scholastica (2-5-0).

Renato Engler scored his first career goal for Lawrence (2-5-0), and Rudi Pino added a short-handed goal for the Vikings.

The Saints led 3-0 just 4:59 into the game and held that advantage into the second period. St. Scholastica then scored three goals, including two by Nowakowski, in the first 9:09 of the second period to pull away.

Engler finally got Lawrence on the board with a power-play goal at 17:19 of the second. Pino scored his short-hander with just 50 seconds left in the game.

Michael Baldino made 40 saves and took the loss for Lawrence, which was out-shot 49-18. Colin Rundell made 16 saves to pick up the win.

Lawrence finishes the Thanksgiving Classic when it faces No. 6 St. Norbert College on Saturday evening.

Balanced attack leads Vikings past Marian

Five Lawrence University players scored in double figures as the Vikings downed Marian University 83-76 in a nonconference game Wednesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Conor Klusendorf paced Lawrence (1-1) with 17 points, and he added seven rebounds four assists, four blocks and a steal. Chris Siebert, who drained a huge 3-pointer in the final minute, added 16 points and a game-high eight assists.

Davis DeWolfe picked up 14 points and six rebounds for the Vikings. Max Burgess was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range, and finished with 13 points. Ryan DePouw added 10 points for Lawrence.

Cody Veleke led Marian (1-2) and all scorers with 23 points, and Sam Koslowski added 20 points for the Sabres.

Lawrence led by 13 at 50-37 early in the second half, but the Sabres went on a 9-0 run to trim the margin to 50-46 with 15:34 remaining. The Vikings pushed the lead back to 62-50 on a Burgess 3-pointer with 9:52 left.

The Vikings led 69-57 after a pair of DeWolfe free throws with 7:45 remaining, but Marian cut the lead to 72-69 after a Mike Keller three-point play with 3:32 left.

Veleke then made a pair of free throws with 3:10 remaining to trim the lead to 73-71, but Trace Sonnleitner buried a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 76-71 with 2:50 left.

The teams traded missed free throws before Keller’s layup cut the margin to 76-73. With the Vikings working the clock, Siebert went one-on-one on the perimeter and drained a 3-pointer with 39 seconds left to push Lawrence’s lead to 79-73.

The Sabres missed a 3-pointer, and Lawrence then hit 4 of 6 free throws in the final 27 seconds to seal the win.

Lawrence returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Illinois College to open Midwest Conference play.
