In a 3-1 victory over Monmouth, which was 6-0 in the MWC, Bohrer had 18 kills and hit .389 for the match. Bohrer also had a school-record 12 blocks, breaking the record of 11 set by Kayte Hansen in 1999, three digs and two aces.

Bohrer, picking up MWC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career, piled up 49 kills, a .324 hitting percentage, 16 blocks, 11 digs and four aces for the week.

The Vikings (12-14, 3-4 MWC) return to action on Friday when they host Beloit College in a conference match at Alexander Gymnasium.

Scurfield’s short-hander gives Lawrence season-opening victory at UWSP

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Brad Scurfield scored a short-handed goal with 1:39 left in the game to lift the Lawrence University hockey team to a 5-4 nonconference victory over UW-Stevens Point Saturday night at Willett Arena.

Scurfield’s short-handed goal, the first short-hander of the sophomore forward’s career, came after teammate Reijo Wahlin had been sent off for checking from behind.

After the Vikings took the lead, Lawrence’s Sam Johnson was whistled for checking from behind with just 42 second left. The Pointers pulled their goaltender, but Lawrence was able to hang on for the victory.

It was the second consecutive season Lawrence had won its season opener, but it the first time the Vikings had won a season opener on the road since 1997.

Scurfield got the scoring started when he scored on the power play at the 12:24 mark of the first period. Stevens Point tied it on Alex Handy’s goal on the man-advantage with just 1:09 left in the opening period.

Lawrence made it 2-1 on freshman Paul Zuke’s first career goal when he scored on the power play just 1:30 into the second period. The Pointers tied at 5:00, but freshman John Orrico gave Lawrence a 3-2 lead heading into the third period when he scored at 18:15.

Stevens Point’s Johnny Meo tied it at 3-3 just 52 seconds into the third, and Jake Skjodt gave the Pointers a 4-3 led at the 8:01 with his power-play goal.

Orrico notched his second goal of the night when he scored unassisted at 10:44 to tie it at 4-4.

Evan Johnson made 26 saves to pick up the win for Lawrence. Randy Wolcott made 16 saves and took the loss.

Pair of late TDs allow Foresters to pull away from Lawrence

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Lake Forest College football team scored two touchdowns in the final 6:42 to pull away and post a 35-14 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Farwell Field.

The Foresters led 21-14 when Kevin Davis caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from Pete Scaffidi. Ed Dobernig then returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown to seal the win for Lake Forest (1-7, 1-6 MWC).

Scaffidi was 14 of 22 passing and got more than one-third of his 155 passing yards on one pass to Davis. Brock Stenberg ran 19 times for 75 yards to pace Lake Forest’s ground game.

Lawrence (1-7, 1-6) played nearly the entire game without starting quarterback Luke Barthelmess, who was injured on the second play of the game and did not return. Freshman Sam Kossow came on in relief and was 26 of 52 passing for 279 yards and two touchdowns. Kossow also ran 18 times for 45 yards.

Lake Forest jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the half, but the Vikings rallied in the third quarter.

Kossow finished a six-play, 63-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jon Bruehl with 12:52 left in the third quarter to trim the margin to 21-7. The big play on the drive was Kossow’s 50-yard completion to Jeremiah Johnson to give the Vikings a first down at the Lake Forest 8-yard line.

Lawrence’s next scoring drive was set up when Sam Wagner intercepted a Scaffidi pass at the Lake Forest 28. After a penalty, Kossow then hit Mason Garcia with a 23-yard pass to the Lake Forest 10. Kossow then connected with Johnson for  a touchdown on the next play to cut the margin to 21-14. Johnson caught eight passes for 100 yards to pace the Lawrence receivers.

Lawrence then drove to the Lake Forest 14, but a fumble was recovered by Lake Forest’s Jordan Cruz to snuff out that drive. The Vikings were driving early in the fourth quarter, but Dobernig intercepted Kossow at the Lake Forest 19 to stop that threat.

Scaffidi then connected with Davis on the 59-yard scoring pass for a 28-14 lead.

Dobernig then intercepted Kossow at the Lawrence 39 and returned it for a score with just 1:22 left in the contest to complete the scoring.

Lawrence returns to the Banta Bowl next Saturday to face Beloit College.

The Midwest Conference will honor National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) by launching the “Play for the Cure” campaign during select MWC volleyball games throughout the month of October.

The conference office is partnering with MWC volleyball teams, which will be wearing pink “Play for the Cure” T-shirts in pre-game warm-ups during select conference games.

“Midwest Conference volleyball coaches deserve all the credit for putting their enthusiasm and effort behind this initiative,” MWC Commissioner Chris Graham said. “We are pleased to be supporting awareness and fund-raising for such an important cause.”

The Lawrence volleyball team is hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness Day for the third consecutive year. The Vikings have been collecting donations on campus leading up to the event. Pink Lawrence volleyball t-shirts also will be offered for sale, and the Vikings will wear their pink jerseys during the match.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Appleton Medical Center Cancer Center.

Lawrence swimmers to participate in ‘Hour of Power’

The Lawrence University swim team is set to participate in the fifth annual “Hour of Power” relay event on Nov. 9.

The event raises money for the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Sarcoma.

The event features a “leave it in the pool” practice by the Lawrence men’s and women’s swim teams. It will consist of continuous relays from 4-5 p.m. with the objective of keeping all eight lanes in the Buchanan Kiewit Center’s Boldt Natatorium on the same length.

“This is a great even that our swimmers have embraced to help raise funds for cancer research,” Lawrence head coach Drew Fleek said. “This is a nationwide event that saw 6,500 athletes raise $78,000 last year.”

The “Hour of Power” relay honors Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin, who passed away in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer. Funds raised through the event support research at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital into the causes and treatment of sarcoma in young people.

“The great thing about the ‘Hour of Power’ is that our whole team participates in the relay event,” said Katie Nelson, a junior swimmer and chairman of the event. “Our team is selling special ‘Hour of Power’ T-shirts for $10 and asking students, faculty and staff, parents and friends of Lawrence to make donations for the relay.”

When the event began in 2006, 15 teams joined together to raise team spirit, cancer awareness and $11,000. Last year, the number of participating teams exploded to 134 on four continents, including 103 college and university programs, 28 high school and club teams, and three students-abroad teams. The even has raised more than $190,000 since its inception.

“We encourage the entire Lawrence community to come out to the pool and cheer on the swimmers,” Nelson said. “We will have T-shirts available and other donations will be accepted.”
