Cardinal takes first for Vikings at Lake Forest Double Dual

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Lawrence University standout Hayley Cardinal picked up an event victory for the Vikings on Saturday at the Lake Forest Double Dual.

Cardinal swam to victory in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:18.81.

Lake Forest defeated both Lawrence and Carroll in the team scores. The Foresters topped Lawrence 78-34 on the women’s side and 76-27 in the men’s meet. Lawrence and Carroll tied 52-52 in the women’s meet, and the Carroll men topped Lawrence 61-49.

Raiders shut out Lawrence 4-0

APPLETON, Wis. — The Milwaukee School of Engineering limited Lawrence University to just 19 shots en route to a 4-0 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association over the Vikings on Saturday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

 MSOE goaltender Nick Kohn stopped all 19 shots to pick up the shutout for the Raiders (11-5-1, 8-3-1 MCHA). Casey Moneer scored a pair of goals to pace the MSOE attack.

Fabian Sivnert made 34 saves and took the loss for Lawrence (5-10-2, 4-6-2).

The game was scoreless when Lawrence missed on several good scoring chances early in the second period. MSOE counterattacked and Logan Baumann gave MSOE a 1-0 lead with his goal at the 7:03 mark.

The Raiders made it 2-0 when Moneer stuffed the puck past Sivnert after a scramble in front of the net with just 1:33 left in the second period.

Moneer scored again at the 4:44 mark of the third to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead, and MSOE added an empty-net goal by Steve Shaffroth with 1:30 left.

Vikings run away early from Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team bolted to a big early lead and cruised to a 72-43 Midwest Conference victory over Knox College on Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium.

Conor Klusendorf and Ryan DePouw scored 13 points apiece to pace Lawrence (7-8, 5-5 MWC), and Klusendorf added a game-high nine rebounds. Chris Siebert and Tyler Mazur added 10 points apiece for the Vikings.

David Jones and Lukas Shaw scored seven points apiece to lead Knox (1-14, 1-9).

After both teams got off to a cool start, Lawrence led 4-2 when the Vikings scored the next 12 points. Siebert scored five points in that stretch and Klusendorf added four as the Vikings built a 16-4 lead.

Lawrence would continue to pull away early with Troy Miller hitting a 3-pointer to give Lawrence a 28-8 lead with 7:12 left in the opening half. The Vikings would go on to lead 39-17 at the break.

The Vikings put the game away early in the second half. Lawrence opened the second half on a 12-1 scoring run to build a 49-18 advantage with 15:46 remaining.

The Vikings would go on to lead by as many as 35 points.

Lawrence’s defense limited Knox to only 34.1 percent shooting from the floor, including 15 percent from beyond the 3-point line. The Vikings also forced 24 Knox turnovers.  

Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Carroll University in a Midwest Conference game.

Vikings fall to Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. — Knox College’s Jodi Marver scored 24 points, and the Prairie Fire feasted on turnovers Saturday en route to a 90-54 Midwest Conference win over the Lawrence University women’s basketball team at Memorial Gymnasium.

Lawrence (1-14, 0-10 MWC) committed 38 turnovers, and Knox (6-9, 4-6) converted 40 points off the Lawrence miscues.

Amber Lisowe paced Lawrence with a double-double of 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Lawrence stayed with Knox throughout the first half, and trailed by only eight after Cathy Kaye’s jumper cut Knox’s lead to 35-27 with 1:07 left. Knox then scored the final six points of the first half to pull out to a 41-27 lead at the break.

The Prairie Fire opened the second half with another burst to pull away. Knox outscored the Vikings 13-5, capped by Chantal Heckman’s 3-pointer, to lead 54-32 with 16:38 remaining.

The Vikings pulled back to within 18 at 56-38 on Jeannine Schulz’s jumper with 14:01 left, but Knox steadily pulled away from that point. The Prairie Fire would lead lead by as many as 40 points in the second half.

Lawrence returns home to face Carroll University on Wednesday in a Midwest Conference game.

MSOE edges Lawrence in overtime

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Steve Shaffroth scored 1:18 into overtime to lift the Milwaukee School of Engineering hockey team to a 4-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at the Kern Center.

MSOE (10-5-1, 7-3-1 MCHA) scored the winning goal off a pass from Kyle Smith in the third consecutive overtime game for Lawrence (5-9-2, 4-5-2).

Lawrence grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the second period. Freshman Rudi Pino scored on the power play for the Vikings just 1:16 into the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Senior forward Phil Bushbacher then scored just 1:01 later to give the Vikings a 2-1 edge.

MSOE tied it at 2-2 on Jordan  Keizer’s goal at the 3:33 mark of the second. Lawrence grabbed the lead right back when Brad Scurfield scored his second short-handed goal of the season at the 6:02 mark.

Lawrence maintained that 3-2 lead until early in the third period when Bradley Tierney scored for the Raiders.

Nick Kohn made 31 saves for the Raiders, who also used goaltender Zach Polak, who made five stops. Lawrence goaltender Fabian Sivnert stopped 33 shots for the Vikings.

The teams wrap up the two-game series Saturday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Ripon shoots down Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The Ripon College men’s basketball team had a hot shooting night and rode that to an 83-58 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Tuesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Taylor Koth hit 12 of 18 shots from the floor and scored a game-high 33 points for Ripon (7-8, 5-5 MWC). Kyle Loughrin added 19 points and Brad Brooks had 14 for the Red Hawks.

Ripon hit 17 of 27 shots (63 percent) from the floor in the first half and then went 15-for-30 (50 percent) from the floor in the second half.

Chris Siebert scored 20 points, and Conor Klusendorf added 11 points for Lawrence (6-8, 4-5).

Ripon got off to a great start and went on a 17-4 run midway through the first half to explode to a 30-14 lead. Lawrence trailed 46-31 at the half.

Lawrence never put a dent in the lead early in the first half, and the Red Hawks went on a 13-2 run to build a 65-39 lead with 10:32 left in the game.

Lawrence never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Ripon topples Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. — A slow start and too many turnovers combined to help the Ripon College women’s basketball team to a 56-38 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Tuesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Erin Lind paced Ripon (6-9, 5-5 MWC) with 13 points and six steals, and Jill Van Eperen added 11 points and five steals for the Red Hawks.

Alex Deshler led Lawrence (1-13, 0-9) with 12 points and she added eight rebounds and four steals.

Lawrence shot only 21.1 percent (4-19) from the floor in the first half, and the Vikings committed 17 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Lawrence finished with 30 turnovers and shot only 27.9 percent (12-43) for the game.

Ripon led 14-8 with eight minutes left in the first half and then quickly pulled away for the reminder of the half. The Red Hawks went on a 14-4 run to finish the half and led 30-12 at the break.

The Red Hawks led by as many as 28 points in the second half, and Lawrence never got closer than the final margin of 18 points.

Vikings battle to overtime tie with No. 7 Adrian

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University hockey team battled to a 4-4 overtime tie with No. 7 Adrian College on Saturday night in a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Lawrence (5-8-2, 4-4-2 MCHA) got the tying goal from Brandon Boelter with 3:39 left in the third period to force a second consecutive night of overtime hockey. Lawrence and Adrian played to a 5-5 tie on Friday night.

Adrian (12-1-2, 8-0-2), one of the top power-play teams in the nation, started the overtime on the man-advantage when Lawrence’s Matt Moore was called for hooking as the third period expired.

The Bulldogs, who went 2-for-5 on the power play, were stymied by Lawrence goaltender Fabian Sivnert in the overtime. Sivnert saved all eight Adrian shots on net in the overtime. Sivnert finished with 44 saves.

Lawrence also had an excellent scoring chance in the overtime when Phil Bushbacher had a free run at the net, but his shot went just wide.

Justin Basso scored with 5:03 left in the regulation to give Adrian a 4-3 lead. Kevin Balas was whistled for high sticking just 33 seconds later to put Lawrence on the power play.

Boelter made the Bulldogs pay by scoring off a blast from the left point that beat Adrian goaltender James Hamby. Hamby, who came on in relief of Scott Shackell after the first period, finished with 17 saves.

Lawrence took a 1-0 lead when Ryan Rumble scored his first collegiate goal just two minutes in the game. The Bulldogs tied it on Andrew Dovey’s goal just 43 seconds later.

Lawrence, which went 2-for-6 on the power play, made it 2-1 on Boelter’s power-play goal at the 5:58 mark of the first. Ryan Gieseler countered with a power-play goal for Adrian at 6:56. The Vikings then got a goal from Bushbacher at 7:54 and took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.

Adrian tied it at 3-3 on Chris Leone’s goal just 1:34 into the second period.

Adrian finished the game with a 48-34 edge in shots on goal.

Grinnell takes down Vikings

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College men’s basketball team pulled away midway through the second half and went on to a 90-74 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers (10-3, 7-2 MWC) scored five consecutive points midway through the second half to grab a double-digit lead, and Lawrence (6-7, 4-4) was never able to get closer than 10 points after that.

Griffin Lentsch led Grinnell with 15 points, and Patrick Maher added 14.

Conor Klusendorf, Ryan DePouw and Chris Siebert had 18 points apiece for the Vikings. Klusendorf hit 9 of 10 shots from the floor, but the Vikings shot only 53.1 percent from the floor against Grinnell’s pressure defense.

It was DePouw’s layup that cut Grinnell’s lead to 67-59 with 10:28 remaining in the game. Lentsch countered with a 3-pointer for Grinnell and Garrett Nitz hit a pair of free throws to push the Grinnell lead to 72-59 with 8:32 remaining.

Lawrence got the deficit back to 74-64 on Davis DeWolfe’s layup with 6:58 left, but Grinnell then went on a 14-4 run to seal the victory.
