Marian takes opener in Battle of Highway 41 series

APPLETON, Wis. — Marian University scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the second period and went on to a 3-1 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

The game was part of the Battle of Highway 41 series, and Lawrence currently has possession of the traveling trophy after sweeping the series a season ago. All Marian needs is a tie on Saturday night at the Blue Line Ice Center to take back the trophy.

Lawrence’s Phil Bushbacher tied the game at 1-1 when he scored a power-play goal off a pass from Brad Scurfield just 3:03 into the second period.

Mitch Kriz gave Marian (9-10-1, 8-70 MCHA) a 2-1 edge when he scored at the 10:51 mark of the second. The Sabres quickly made it 3-1 when Brett Campbell scored at the 16:07 mark.

Neither team was able to score in the final period, as goaltender Josh Baker stopped all 10 of Lawrence’s shots in the final 20 minutes. Baker finished with 41 saves as Lawrence (6-12-2, 5-8-2) enjoyed a 42-33 edge in shots on goal.

Fabian Sivnert made 30 saves for Lawrence. 

The win also puts Marian four points ahead of the Vikings in the MCHA standings with five games left to play in the regular season.

Second-half surge rallies St. Norbert past Lawrence

DE PERE, Wis. — The St. Norbert College men’s basketball team pulled away midway through the second half and went on to a 68-54 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Tuesday at Schuldes Sports Center.

Andrew Schwoerer paced St. Norbert (15-3, 12-2 MWC) with a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Conor Klusendorf led Lawrence (8-10, 6-7) with 15 points, and Chris Siebert added 13 points for the Vikings.

The teams traded the lead throughout the first half, and Lawrence led 28-27 at the break. After Jamie Nikitas hit a jumper for the Vikings with 13:32 left in the game, St. Norbert’s lead was cut to 40-39.

The Green Knights then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 46-39 with 11:40 remaining. Klusendorf countered with a jumper to trim the lead to five, but that’s as close as the Vikings would get.

St. Norbert went on a 12-2 run that expanded its lead to 60-44 with 7:29 remaining. The Vikings went 0-for-5 from the floor during that stretch and got their only two points on a pair of Siebert free throws.

The Green Knights, who put on a dominating performance on the glass to the tune of 50-25 rebounding edge, would expand their lead to as many as 19 points.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Illinois College.

Sharpshooting St. Norbert downs Vikings

DE PERE, Wis. — The St. Norbert College women’s basketball team broke out of its two-game shooting slump in a big way on Tuesday and rolled to an 87-31 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at Schuldes Sports Center.

St. Norbert, losers of two straight in which they had hit just 1 of 33 3-point attempts, shot 56.5 percent from the floor and connected on 9 of 16 (56.3 percent) from beyond the arc.

Megan Doody paced St. Norbert (13-6, 10-4 MWC) with 15 points as she went 5-for-5 on 3-pointers. Doody also added a game-high 10 assists. Morgan Heim also had 15 points for the Green Knights.

Amber Lisowe led Lawrence (1-17, 0-13) with eight points. The Vikings had a frigid shooting night and hit on only 11 of 51 (21.6 percent) shots from the floor. Lawrence went 0-for-13 from 3-point range.

St. Norbert grabbed control of the game early by racing to a 14-0 lead. Lawrence didn’t score until Patsy Kealey’s jumper with 14:48 left in the first half. Lawrence did not score again until Kealey hit another jumper at the 7:33 mark, but St. Norbert had built a 29-4 advantage.

The Green Knights led 47-12 at the half, and St. Norbert would lead by as many as 60 points in the second half.

Lawrence men, women take second at Private College Championships

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s and women’s swim team both placed second on Saturday at the Wisconsin Private College Championships at Carthage College.

Freshman Emily Flack led the way for Lawrence by taking home a pair of individual titles. Flack won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.36 and swam to victory in the 200 backstroke in 2:16.80.

Sophomore Taylor Winter and freshman Hayley Cardinal also won titles for the women. Winter captured the 1,650 freestyle in 18:22.87, and Cardinal grabbed the title in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.71.

On the men’s side, Evan Flack and Charlie Mann both won titles. Flack took first in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.76, and Mann swam to victory in the 100 backstroke in 57.97 seconds.

Carthage won both team titles. The Carthage women were first with 289, and Lawrence was second at 152. The Carthage men won the title with 288, and Lawrence was second at 116.

Siebert’s career day leads Lawrence past Fighting Scots

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Chris Siebert poured in a career-high 30 points to lead the Lawrence University men’s basketball team to an 87-73 Midwest Conference victory over Monmouth College on Saturday at Glennie Gymnasium.

Siebert hit 8 of 13 shots from the floor, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, and he went a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line. The junior guard ecliped his previous career high of 26 points, set vs. Wisconsin Lutheran College on Nov. 18, 2011. Siebert also tied for game-high honors with seven rebounds and he added three assists and a steal.

Lawrence (8-9, 6-6 MWC) also got stellar performances from sophomore Ryan DePouw, who added 18 points and a game-high five assists, and from freshman Jamie Nikitas, who chipped in with 17 points.

The Vikings had one of their best free-throw games in recent memory by hitting 31 of 35 shots from the stripe.

Mike DeDecker led Monmouth (4-14, 3-10) with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Lawrence was down 15-4 early, but the Vikings went on a 13-2 run, capped with 3-pointers from DePouw and Tyler Mazur, to tie the game at 17-17. The Vikings grabbed their first lead with 6:06 left in the first half, and Lawrence would go on to lead 38-32 at the half.

The Vikings quickly doubled that lead early in the second half, with Siebert draining a 3-pointer to give the Vikings a 48-36 lead with 17:26 remaining. Monmouth cut the lead back to one at 56-55 midway through the second half, but the Scots were never able to regain the lead.

Lawrence gradually pulled away, and the lead was back to 10 at 75-65 on Nikitas’ layup with 2:43 left. The Vikings then went 10-for-12 from the foul line in the final 2:24 to seal the victory.

Vikings fall to Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Monmouth College women’s basketball team scored the game’s first 12 points and never looked back en route to an 85-37 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University on Saturday at Glennie Gymnasium.

The Scots (15-3, 10-3 MWC) jumped out to a 32-2 lead as Lawrence (1-16, 0-12) went 9:05 in the first half without a point. The Scots led 50-16 at the half.

Marla Willard paced Monmouth with 16 points. Colleen Forrest added 12 points and Paige Nord had 11 for the Scots.

Alex Deshler was the lone player in double figures for the Vikings with 10 points. Amber Lisowe added seven points, six rebounds and three blocks for the Vikings. 

The Scots would go on to lead by as many as 50 points in the second half.

Big third period pushes Lumberjacks past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — Northland College scored three times in the third period to rally for a 4-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Mike Lennon scored two of the three goals for Northland (7-11-1, 5-9-0 MCHA) in the first 8:14 of the third period.

Lawrence (6-11-2, 5-7-2 MCHA) led 2-1 entering the final period, but Louis Labbe’s goal tied it for Northland just 1:57 into the third.

Rudi Pino was then whistled for roughing the goaltender at the 5:30 mark to put Northland on the power play. The Lumberjacks converted on Lennon’s goal at the 6:34 mark to take a 3-2 lead. Northland made it 4-2 when Lennon scored again at the 8:14 mark.

Lawrence battled back freshman forward Renato Engler weaved past a pair of Northland defenders and zinged a wrist shot past Mason Riley to cut the lead to 4-3 with 4:52 remaining.

Northland’s Kraig Wright was then whistled for hooking with 2:55 left to put the Vikings on the power play. Lawrence got five shots on goal during the power play but couldn’t get the equalizer. The Vikings pulled goaltender Fabian Sivnert for an extra attacker with 1:25 left but didn’t get another shot on net.

Lawrence took a 1-0 lead when Pino scored just 2:57 into the first period. The Vikings made it 2-0 on Patrick Coyne’s goal at the 15:58 mark of the first. The Lumberjacks cut the lead to 2-1 when Austin Southerland scored at the 15:28 mark of the second.

Riley made 47 saves as Lawrence posted a season-high 50 shots on goal. Sivnert stopped 29 shots for Lawrence.

Laursen takes title for Vikings at UW-Oshkosh Open

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Freshman Jonah Laursen was a winner Friday night for the Lawrence University track and field team at the UW-Oshkosh Open at Kolf Sports Center.

Laursen grabbed first in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:13.90, and teammate Curren Carlile grabbed second in 16:30.62.

The Lawrence men finished fourth with 52 points. The Lawrence women were fourth with 27 points.

The top finisher on the women’s side was Liz Landes, who took third in the 5,000 meters in 21:01.91.

Big second half leads Carroll past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The Carroll University men’s basketball team scored 46 second-half points and held Lawrence University to just 24 percent shooting after the break to rally for a 74-68 Midwest Conference victory on Wednesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Kevin Hurd and Alec Molter both posted double-doubles for Carroll (12-4, 8-3 MWC). Hurd had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Molter had 10 of 13 points and 10 of his 11 rebounds in the second half.

Conor Klusendorf had a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to pace Lawrence (7-9, 5-6). Ryan DePouw led the Vikings with 15 points and Tyler Mazur added 13.

Lawrence was in command in the first half as the Vikings sprinted to a 38-28 lead at the break while shooting 53.6 percent from the floor.

The Vikings went cold in the second half and hit on only 7 of 29 shots (24.1 percent) from the floor. Lawrence was 3-for-14 on 3-pointers in the second half, connecting on just one of its first 12 tries from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.

Lawrence led 43-30 early in the second half, but Carroll scored 14 consecutive points to take a 44-43 lead on Molter’s layup with 13:40 left. The teams then traded the lead before the Pioneers took the lead for good at 49-48 on Hurd’s layup with 9:33 left. 

Carroll built its lead to as many as nine points at 60-51, but Klusendorf answered with a three-point play. Lawrence then trimmed the lead back to 62-58 on a pair of free throws from DePouw with 2:27 left.

Lawrence missed its next two shots from the floor, both 3-pointers, and Carroll pushed the lead back to 68-58. Lawrence never got closer than six points after that.

The Vikings return to action on Saturday when they travel to Monmouth College.

Carroll pulls out overtime victory over Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. — The Carroll University women’s basketball team held the Lawrence University scoreless in overtime to post a 60-52 Midwest Conference victory over the Vikings on Wednesday at Alexander Gymnasium

Hilary Arthur paced Carroll (8-6, 7-4 MWC) with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kelly Menden led Carroll in scoring with 12 points.

Alex Deshler paced the Vikings (1-15, 0-11) with 15 points, and Amber Lisowe added 13 points. Patsy Kealey tied for game-high honors with 10 rebounds for the Vikings and posted four blocks.

Lawrence opened the second half with a 12-3 run to grab a 26-22 lead with 14:57 left, and the Vikings pressed that lead to as many eight points. The Vikings were up 48-40 after Kealey’s jumper with 3:40 left, but Carroll rallied in the final three minutes.

The Pioneers scored seven consecutive points, capped by Menden’s 3-pointer with 56 seconds left, to tie the game at 50-50. After the Vikings missed a pair of layups, Menden grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 16 seconds remaining.

Menden made both free throws, but Deshler converted a tough layup with six seconds left to tie it at 52-52. Corrine Engles missed a jumper at the buzzer and the game went to overtime.

The Vikings went cold in the extra period and missed all six of their shots from the floor. Carroll also went 0-for-6 from the floor, but the Pioneers went 8-for-8 from the foul line to pull out the victory.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Monmouth College for a Midwest Conference game.
