Summer is here!

It seems like all of my posts focus on the weather…well at least their titles do.  In my defense, it has been a hard year weather-wise!  But today it was officially 80+ degrees!  I absolutely love spending time outside reading and doing homework, so that’s what I’ve been doing so far this weekend!

It’s 9th week this week, so my classes are starting to wind down a bit, which usually means more work! I only have one test and one presentation this week though.  Since this term isn’t as busy as most of my terms have been in the past, I’ve actually gotten the chance to relax and spend time with my friends, which has been really nice!

I’ve had a lot of perspective students ask me about how the trimester system works and what the advantages/disadvantages are.  I love the fact that we get a long winter break, because it enables me to visit my mom, who lives in Germany.  But I do recognize the challenges of Spring term, because we don’t get out until early- to mid- June.  Personally, I’d rather have the long winter break and I’ve never been denied a job because I get out of school later than most college students, but I know it’s a little different for everyone.  My Sophomore year, I worked at a camp over summer and I did have to leave campus right after my last final and move into camp the next day, but it was definitely doable!

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I will be working on campus over the summer doing Psychology research.  I did that last summer too and it was such a good learning experience!  But, that does mean that I won’t really be able to totally get away from the school setting! Obviously my job is a lot different from classes, but it does have a few similarities, like reading Psychology articles and even writing papers! 🙂  But the nice thing is that it’s the only thing I’ll be doing, so I won’t have to worry about balancing my job with another job (I worked two jobs last summer – 80 hours a week is not fun) or with schoolwork.  I’m definitely looking forward to going to the farmer’s market every weekend for some delicious fresh fruits and vegetables!

Honestly, other than work and homework, I haven’t been up to much the past two weeks or so!  LUaroo was yesterday, though! It’s basically a music festival for both on- and off-campus bands.  I’m not usually a fan of huge crowds of people (although to be honest a huge crowd for Lawrence is still pretty small), so my friends and I sat outside of the quad (where the music was being played).  We could still hear the awesome music, though!  Actually, I also went to Ormsby Zoo Days a few weeks ago, too!  Ormsby is one of the dorms on campus, and every year (I think it’s to celebrate Ormsby’s birthday), they throw this festival.  A bunch of groups and organizations have booths where you can do lots of fun stuff, like decorate cookies, test your strength, or make bracelets!  This year, one of the fraternities on campus, Phi Tau, was raising money for their philanthropy by having “Pie a Phi”.  Basically, you pay five dollars for five “pies” made out of whipped cream and then you throw them at whoever you want to!  One of my friends is in Phi Tau, so a bunch of us pied him…it was pretty hilarious!
