WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Lawrence University softball team wrapped up the Midwest Conference season with a doubleheader split at Carroll University on Wednesday.
The Vikings (15-13, 6-7 MWC) won the opener 11-0, and Carroll (12-19, 6-7) rallied for a 7-6 win in nine innings in the nightcap.
In the opener, Cathy Kaye, Shannon Murray and Alex Goodson all collected three hits, and Kaye and Murray both drove in three runs.
Goodson had a run-scoring triple in a two-run first, and Murray blasted a two-run homer in the fourth to give Lawrence a 4-0 lead.
The Vikings put the game away with seven runs in the sixth. The sixth-inning outburst was highlight by Kaye’s three-run homer.
Murray went five innings, allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked two to pick up the win.
In the nightcap, Kaye, Katie Simonson, Emily Perish and Britni Totzke all had two hits for the Vikings.
Lawrence led 4-1 before Carroll scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Courtney Steile singled to rive in Gaelen Lombard-Knapp to give Lawrence a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth. Carroll came up with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to tie it at 5-5.
Kaye tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to put Lawrence back up 6-5. Carroll then got two more uneared runs in the bottom of the ninth to win it.
