The Lawrence University hockey team scored two goals in an eight-second span late in the third period and went on to a 4-2 victory Friday over the College of St. Scholastica in a nonconference game at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
The game was part of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association/Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Thanksgiving Showdown. In the early game Friday, St. Norbert College topped Marian University 4-1.
Lawrence (6-1-0) led 1-0 thanks to Jameson Raymond’s power-play goal late in the second period, and St. Scholastica (3-5-0) didn’t get the equalizer until Jeremy Dawes scored at the 12:35 mark of the third.
The Saints quickly grabbed a 2-1 lead when Riley Riddell scored just 1:47 later.
Lawrence struck back and tied the game at 2-2 on Josh DeSmit’s goal with just 2:28 remaining. The Vikings then won the ensuing faceoff and Matt Hughes took the pass from Huck Saunders and raced to the net. He beat Saints goaltender Patrick Sullivan just eight seconds later to give Lawrence a 3-2 edge.
The Saints then pulled Sullivan with just over a minute remaining, and Hughes sealed the win with an empty-net goal with just 57 seconds remaining.
Lawrence goaltender Michael Baldino picked up his first collegiate victory. Baldino, a sophomore, stopped 33 shots. Sullivan made 31 saves and took the loss.
Lawrence is back in action on Saturday when it hosts St. Norbert at 7 p.m. St. Scholastica faces Marian at 3:30 p.m.
