The Lawrence University men’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Lake Forest College on Sunday in a Midwest Conference match at Whiting Field West.
Lawrence, which needs a win at Illinois College next Saturday to ensure a berth in the Midwest Conference Tournament, got on the board first on a beautiful play. Vince Butitta scored when Oliver Newsom played a ball just past a Lake Forest defender. Butitta blasted the ball past Lake Forest goalkeeper Ian Taylor and the Vikings led 1-0 at 62:57.
Lake Forest continued to press the attack and got the equalizer on a goal from Alexi Spiratos at 82:13.
That’s the way it would stay as both teams had good scoring chances in the overtime but could not convert.
Steve Solomon made eight saves for the Vikings, and defender Matt Horn cleared a ball off the goal line to stop another Lake Forest scoring chance. Taylor made seven saves for the Foresters.
