APPLETON, Wis. — The 10th-ranked UW-Eau Claire hockey team downed Lawrence University 5-0 in a nonconference game on Saturday at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
Eau Claire broke open a close game with two goals early in the third period. The Blugolds led 2-0 when Preston Hodge scored just 2:59 into the period. Eau Claire then added a power-play goal from Jon Waggoner just 1:27 later to put the advantage to 4-0.
Jay Deo was outstanding in net and made 14 saves to pick up the shutout for Eau Claire (7-3-1). Mattias Soderqvist stopped 33 shots for the Vikings (4-8-1).
Eau Claire jumped on top midway through the first period when Joe Krause scored with an extra attacker on the ice following a delayed penalty. Krause made it 2-0 at 9:04 of the second.
The Blugolds had a 38-14 edge in shots on goal and went 2–for-6 on the power play. Lawrence was 0-for-2 on the man-advantage.
