CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team collected only four hits on Friday against Middlebury College, but that was enough for the Vikings to score a 3-2 nonconference victory.
Lawrence (7-5) picked up single runs in the first, third and sixth innings and held off a Middlebury rally in the seventh to preserve the win.
Liz Barthels allowed one run and four hits over four innings to pick up the win for Lawrence. Kara Vance tossed 1.1 innings of relief to pick up the save.
The Vikings got on the board after Savanna Marsicek started the bottom of the first with a single. After a sacrifice bunt, Marsicek moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Anna Wawiorka’s squeeze bunt.
Lawrence made it 2-0 in the third and got some help from the Panthers (6-6). Tierney Duffy reached on an error, went to third on another error and scored on Wawiorka’s single.
Middlebury cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, but Lawrence got that run back in the sixth. Alissa Geipel singled to start the inning and scored on Amanda Jaskolski’s triple for a 3-1 lead.
Vance allowed a run in the seventh, and the Panthers had the tying run on base when she got a fly ball for the final out.
