Big first quarter leads Macalester past Lawrence

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Macalester College football team scored 26 points in the first quarter and went on to a 33-0 Midwest Conference North Division win over Lawrence University on Saturday.

The Scots (6-1, 3-0 MWC North)  posted two touchdowns in their first four plays from scrimmage to take control.

Quarterback Samson Bialostok had two runs for 58 yards and a touchdown, and he completed 4-of-6 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

Lawrence quarterback Tanner Schuh was 9-for-17 for 154 yards, and Chance Byrd was 8-for-16 for 58 yards. Cole Erickson grabbed six passes for 111 yards for the Vikings (2-5, 1-2).

On the second play from scrimmage, Bialostok ran 57 yards for a touchdown to give the Scots a 7-0 lead. After three plays and a punt, Macalester took over at its own 31-yard line. Two plays later, Bialostok hit Garrett Eichhorn with a 64-yard scoring pass for a 14-0 lead.

The Scots got a 31-yard field goal from Michael Abramson and a safety to go up 19-0. After the free kick, Bialostok completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ben Hillman three plays later to put the Scots up 26-0.

Macalester made it 33-0 on Ethan Carpenter’s three-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter.

Lawrence had several good scoring chances but couldn’t punch it in. The Vikings were stopped on downs at the Macalester 21 in the second quarter, and the Scots stopped Lawrence four times from their one-yard line in the third quarter.
