APPLETON, Wis — Marian University scored three times in the second period Saturday night and rode that outburst to a 5-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win over Lawrence University at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
The Sabres (2-2-0, 2-2-0 NCHA) broke a 1-1 tie just 2:04 into the second period when Derek Thorogood scored. Marian made it 3-1 at the 14:11 on Thomas Nosella’s goal. The Sabres stretched the lead to 4-1 when Matt Williams scored just 1:50 later.
Lawrence (2-2-0, 2-2-0) cut the margin to 4-2 on Austin Frank’s first collegiate goal at the 12:10 mark of the third period. Frank’s power-play goal came off assists from Brandon Boelter and Brad Mueller.
Marian then sealed the win on Brodie Jamieson’s empty-net goal with 1:16 remaining.
Lawrence grabbed a 1-0 lead just 2:39 into the game when Patrick Coyne beat Mike Baldwin. Marian tied it at 1-1 on Brian Berger’s power-play goal at the 9:11 mark of the first.
Baldwin stopped 26 shots to pick up the win for Marian. Mattias Soderqvist made 21 saves for the Vikings.
The game was part of the Battle of Highway 41 series, and Marian retained possession of the traveling trophy by virtue of a series sweep.
