RIPON, Wis. — The Ripon College football team piled up more than 500 yards on the ground Saturday en route to a 47-7 Midwest Conference North Division win over Lawrence University at Ingalls Field.
Ripon (3-6, 2-3 MWC North) ran the ball 62 times for 528 yards on the afternoon.
Connor Greenwald led the ground assault by running 13 times for 196 yards and two touchdowns for the Red Hawks. Ripon quarterback Stephen Covalt completed only 2-of-6 passes but one went 81 yards for a touchdown. He also threw a pair of interceptions.
Quarterback Chance Byrd completed 23-of-44 passes for 279 yards and three interceptions for Lawrence (2-7, 1-4). Byrd also scored Lawrence’s lone touchdown on a five-yard run.
Ripon broke the game open with three second-quarter touchdowns. The Red Hawks led 7-0 after the first quarter but got a 99-yard scoring drive to make it 14-0 and then hit on a pair of big plays. Greenwald had a 65-yard scoring run, and Covalt connected with Tom Sawyer on the 81-yard touchdown pass to give Ripon a 27-0 lead at the half.
Ripon added three more second-half touchdowns before Lawrence got on the board. The Vikings moved 73 yards in seven plays for a score late in the game. After connecting with Zack Schubert on a 27-yard pass to the Ripon five-yard line, Byrd ran it on the next play for the touchdown.
Trevor Spina caught seven passes for 72 yards for the Vikings, and Taylor Mandich grabbed six passes for 69 yards.
Safety Dan Taylor made 13 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss, to pace the Lawrence defense.
