APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University scored three goals in a four-minute stretch in the second period Friday to take the lead and went on to a 4-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Northland College at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
Four different players scored for Lawrence (3-2-0, 3-2-0 NCHA), which added an insurance goal in the final period.
The Vikings trailed 1-0 midway through the second period when Steve Hughes got his first goal of the season off a pass from Austin Frank at the 9:08 mark. Northland’s Michael Berens scored his second goal of the night just 19 seconds later to put the Lumberjacks up 2-1.
Lawrence’s Tom Lee then slipped behind the Northland defense and beat goaltender Jesse DiLillo one-on-one to tie the game at 2-2 at 10:54. The Vikings pulled ahead 3-2 on freshman Brendan Vetter’s first career goal off a pass from Frank at the 13:19 mark.
Blake Roubos then fired the puck into the upper corner of the net 5:41 into the third period to stretch Lawrence’s lead to 4-2.
Mattias Soderqvist stopped 31 shots to pick up the win for Lawrence. He also held the Lumberjacks to 0-for-8 on the power play. DiLillo made 15 saves for Northland (1-4-0, 1-4-0).
Lawrence goes for the series sweep on Saturday afternoon.
