APPLETON, Wis. — Lewis Berger’s goal in the opening half Saturday proved to be the difference as the Lawrence University men’s soccer team downed Monmouth College 1-0 in a Midwest Conference match at Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
Berger scored in the 27th minute for the lone tally of the match. The goal came off a free kick from Mike Deremo.
The ball was then headed toward the net by Dom Pasquesi where it was deflected slightly by Monmouth goalkeeper Konor Tempel. Berger was right there on the doorstep and pounded it into the back of the net at the 26:53 mark.
That was enough for the Lawrence defense, which frustrated Monmouth all day. The Scots were limited to only seven shots, and Lawrence goalkeeper Joe Krivit made three saves to earn the shutout.
The Vikings (4-13-1, 3-7-0 MWC) controlled play throughout and piled up 15 shots. Tempel made six saves for the Scots (5-12-1, 3-6-1).
