APPLETON, Wis. — The 15th-ranked College of St. Scholastica held on for a 3-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
St. Scholastica (11-4-2, 9-3-0 NCHA) led 2-0 early in the third period, but the Vikings cut that lead in half with just 1:47 left.
The Vikings (6-10-1, 5-6-1) were on the power play and pulled goaltender Mattias Soderqvist for an extra attacker with 3:09 remaining. The power play expired with just over two minutes left but Lawrence scored 14 seconds later on Lane King’s third goal of the season. Brandon Boelter and Renato Engler picked up assists for the Vikings.
Lawrence pulled Soderqvist again with just over a minute remaining in an effort to tie the game. St. Scholastica defenseman Connor Faupel picked off a Lawrence pass and fired it into the empty net to seal the win with 26 seconds left.
Soderqvist finished with 31 saves for the Vikings, and St. Scholastica goaltender Tyler Bruggeman made 28 saves to pick up the win.
St. Scholastica took a 1-0 lead on Derek Sutliffe’s goal just 4:55 into the first period. The score stayed that way until the first shot by the Saints in the third period as Dylan Nowakowski scored on the power play for a 2-0 edge.
St. Scholastica went 1-for-5 on the power play, and Lawrence finished 0-for-5.
