MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The Lawrence University men’s soccer team battled to a 2-2 double-overtime tie on Saturday in a Midwest Conference match with Cornell College.
The teams went scoreless through the 20 minutes over overtime, but Lawrence (5-7-1, 1-3-1 MWC) had the better of the play in the extra session. Lawrence had a 9-6 edge in shots in the overtime and a 22-14 edge for the match.
Taylor Reifert got the scoring started for Lawrence when he found the back of the net off a pass from Jawad Alweleidat at the 8:55 mark.
Cornell (6-4-4, 1-3-2) got a goal from Abubakar Shehu in the 23rd minute to tie it, and then took a 2-1 lead on Facundo Benavidez’s goal at 60:00.
Jack Blodgett then forced the overtime with his goal off an assist from Reifert at 73:36.
Robert Meiser made four saves for Lawrence, and Jerome Richards stopped 12 shots for the Rams.
