APPLETON, Wis. — The St. Norbert College baseball team held off Lawrence University in the opener and then rode a great pitching performance to the win to sweep a Midwest Conference doubleheader on Sunday at Whiting Field.
St. Norbert (20-14, 10-6 MWC) won the opener 10-8 and took the nightcap 7-2.
Jake Gordon collected four hits on the day for Lawrence (6-26, 3-12) and broke the Vikings’ season hits record. Gordon has 53 hits this season, topping the mark of 52 set by Andrew Wong back in 2005.
In the first game, built a 10-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh, but the Vikings rallied. The Vikings got two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of run-scoring ground outs, and Lawrence added two more in the eighth on a run-scoring ground out and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 10-7.
The Vikings opened the ninth with a pair of singles before Nate Schadrie came on to pitch for St. Norbert. Schradrie got the first two outs, but Brandon Klar singled and an error on the play scored Joel Birch. Gabe Warshaw then lined out to end the game.
Travis Mason went five innings and allowed five hits and two runs to pick up the win. Davis Ogilvie went 4.1 innings and took the loss.
Derek Klegin went 2-for-4 for St. Norbert, which had only seven hits in the contest but benefited from 13 walks. Warshaw went 3-for-6 for the Vikings, and Gordon, Sam Kossow and Marc Linger all had two hits.
In the nightcap, Brett Nohr pitched seven strong innings to get the win. He allowed three hits and no runs. He struck out three and walked one. John Doran pitched seven innings and took the loss.
Tyler Brown went 4-for-5 for the Green Knights, who had 15 hits. Gordon and Klar both had a pair of hits for Lawrence.
