APPLETON, Wis. — The Beloit College baseball team used big innings in both games on Thursday to sweep a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University at Whiting Field.
The Bucs won the opener 13-3 and took the nightcap 12-7.
In the first game, Beloit (12-6, 2-0 MWC) scored four times in the third inning and then exploded for seven runs in the fourth to seal the victory.
Austin Martinez went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs, and Alex Lawrence went 2-for-4, scored three runs and drove in three more to pace the Bucs.
Beloit got a standout pitching performance in the opener from Ryan Kaveney, who went the distance. He allowed seven hits, struck out 10 and walked four. Matt Holliday gave up eight runs in the first three innings and took the loss for Lawrence (6-9, 0-2).
Joel Birch and Zach Rabideau both went 2-for-3 to lead Lawrence’s offense in the first game.
Beloit jumped on top early in the second game by scoring five times in the second inning. The Bucs led 5-1 before tacking on single runs in the fourth and fifth, and Beloit scored five runs in the final three innings to seal the win. Jake Parrott went 3-for-4 to pace Beloit’s 17-hit attack in the nightcap.
Lawrence pounded out 15 hits in the second game but stranded 10 runners. Brandon Klar went 3-for-5, scored two runs and drove in two more with a two-run homer in the eighth for the Vikings. Jake Mills went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, and Luke Zablocki finished 3-for-4 and drove in a run.
Jim Leyhane went seven innings and gave up three runs to pick up the win. Drew Doares lasted 4.2 innings and gave up seven runs to take the loss.
