The Lawrence University women’s basketball team returns home this weekend to take on Knox College and Grinnell College in a pair of Midwest Conference games.
Lawrence lost games at Grinnell and Monmouth last weekend and is searching for its first victory of the season. Grinnell picked up two wins last weekend by defeating the Vikings and Carroll University. Knox is coming off a split last weekend. The Prairie Fire defeated Beloit College but fell to St. Norbert College.
Lawrence University standout Jameson Raymond has been named the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week.
Raymond (Flint, Mich./Kearsley) won the honor after Lawrence’s sweep of a weekend series at Finlandia University. Raymond scored two goals, including the game-winner, in Lawrence’s 5-3 victory over the Lions this past Friday. Raymond was a plus-4 on the weekend, which included a 3-2 win over Finlandia on Saturday.
Raymond scored midway through the first period on Friday to stake Lawrence to a 2-0 lead and then scored just 42 seconds into the third period to put the Vikings up 4-0. Both of his goals came on the power play.
Raymond has four goals five assists on the season.
This is the third time in his career that Raymond has won a MCHA weekly award. He was the Freshman of the Week and the Defensive Player of the Week during the 2008-09 season.
Lawrence returns to action this weekend when it hosts Adrian College on Friday and Saturday.
The Lawrence University hockey team returns to the Appleton Family Ice Center this weekend to face ninth-ranked Adrian College in a two-game series.
Lawrence is coming off a road sweep at Finlandia University this past weekend. The Vikings beat Finlandia 5-3 and 3-2 while Adrian picked up three points by defeating the Milwaukee School of Engineering 6-1 and then skating to a 2-2 tie with the Raiders this past weekend.
STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The Lawrence University track team opened its indoor season at the UW-Stevens Point Open on Saturday, and the Vikings won three events.
On the women’s side, Rose Tepper took first in the high jump with a winning leap of 1.56 meters. Amanda Dwyer grabbed first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:44.85.
On the men’s side, Nick Kerkman won the weight throw with a toss of 13.49 meters.
CHICAGO, Ill. — Peter Brengel and Hannah Gabriel led the Lawrence University swim teams to fifth-place finishes at the University of Chicago Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Brengel paced the Lawrence men by placing second in the 200-yard backstroke and third in the 100 backstroke.
Gabriel placed sixth in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle and she also grabbed eighth in the 1,650 freestyle.
Evan Flack placed in three events for the Lawrence men. Flack took fifth in the 200 freestyle and was sixth in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Ted Chritton grabbed fourth in the 1,650 freestyle and was fifth in the 500 freestyle.
HANCOCK, Mich. — Josh DeSmit’s short-handed goal midway through the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Lawrence University hockey team beat Finlandia University 3-2 on Saturday in a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association game at Houghton County Arena.
The Vikings (9-5-1, 7-3-0 MCHA) swept the weekend series from Finlandia (1-13-0, 1-9-0) after posting a 5-3 win on Friday.
Goaltender Evan Johnson picked up the win by making 27 saves. Mike Wuthrich made 29 saves and took the loss.
Sam Johnson scored his first goal of the season at the 13:43 mark of the first period to give Lawrence a 1-0 lead. William Thoren and Jon Bellotti both picked up assists on the goal.
Lawrnece made it 2-0 at 8:48 of the second when Bellotti got his first goal of the season. Johnson and Matt Hughes both assisted on the goal.
Sebastian Rosendahl’s power-play goal at the 13:34 mark of the second trimmed Lawrence’s lead to 2-1 and it remained that way until midway through the third.
After Corey Garrett got sent off for holding at 8:58, Finlandia went on the power play. Near the end of the power play, the Lions couldn’t get the puck deep in the Lawrence zone, and Hughes took the puck for the Vikings. He passed to DeSmit, who beat Wuthrich at 10:46 to give Lawrence a 3-1 edge.
It was the first short-handed and game-winning goal of the season for DeSmit.
Sean Burke cut the lead back to 3-2 when he scored on the power play at 11:54, but the Lions could not get the equalizer despite pulling the goaltender for the final 53 seconds.
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Jon Mays poured in a career-high 27 points, and the Lawrence University men’s basketball team topped Monmouth College 75-67 in a Midwest Conference game Saturday at Glennie Gymnasium.
Mays was 12-for-19 from the floor, including 3-for-7 from 3-point range, to pace the Vikings (7-6, 6-2 MWC). Chris Siebert added 17 points, seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
Tyler Crisman chipped in with 13 points and six assists for the Vikings. Lawrence’s Erik Borresen pulled down 18 rebounds, matching the career high he set Friday night at Grinnell College.
Corey Gruber led Monmouth (3-10, 2-7) with 18 points, and Bryce Donaldson added 17 points.
Lawrence led by as many as eight points early in the first half, but Monmouth rallied to take a three-point lead at one point. Lawrence closed the first half with five consecutive points, including a 3-pointer from Siebert with five seconds left, to take a 43-38 lead at the break.
It was a tight second half and Monmouth grabbed its final lead of the game at 66-63 on back-to-back baskets from Gruber and Michael DeDecker with 6:19 remaining.
Lawrence then scored the game’s next 10 points with Siebert leading the way.
Siebert answered with a layup to cut the lead to 66-65, and then he buried a 3-pointer with 5:06 left that gave Lawrence the lead for good at 68-66. After a missed 3-pointer by DeDecker and Gruber, Brian Gryskiewicz scored on a layup to give Lawrence a 70-66 lead with 4:00 left.
A Monmouth turnover and another missed 3-pointer was followed by Crisman’s layup that gave the Vikings a 72-66 edge. After three consecutive missed jumpers, the Scots were forced to foul.
The Vikings then hit three free throws, including two by Siebert, in the final 40 seconds to seal the win.
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Colleen Forrest scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Monmouth College women’s basketball team to a 75-39 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Glennie Gymnasium.
Forrest hit a school-record eight 3-pointers for the Scots (8-4, 6-2 MWC).
Nakita Chadwick scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds, had three blocks and a pair of steals to pace Lawrence (0-13, 0-8). Katie Van Es added eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Monmouth took control of the game early by scoring the contest’s first 12 points. Cathy Kaye finally broke the drought for Lawrence with a layup at the 15:23 mark of the first half.
Monmouth kept the pressure up and by more than 20 points with 8:16 left in the first half. Lawrence didn’t reach double figures until Cory Paquette’s jumper made the score 32-11 with 4:50 left in the opening half.
Monmouth led by as many as 31 points in the first half, and the Scots would lead by as many as 43 points in the second half.
HANCOCK, Mich. — Jameson Raymond scored a pair of goals, and the Lawrence University hockey team rolled to a 5-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Finlandia University Friday night at Houghton County Arena.
Lawrence (8-5-1, 6-3-0 MCHA) pulled out to a 5-0 lead before Finlandia (1-12-0, 1-8-0) scored three times in the final period.
Evan Johnson stopped 22 shots to earn the victory for the Vikings. Mike Wuthrich made 31 saves and took the loss. Lawrence enjoyed a 36-25 edge in shots.
The Vikings got on the board 7:27 into the first period when Jacob Esch took a pass from Josh DeSmit and beat Wuthrich for a 1-0 lead.
Lawrence made it 2-0 just over two minutes later when Raymond scored on the power play. Freshman Derek Brickan then scored at the 13:54 to send the Vikings to the locker room with a 3-0 lead after the first period.
The second period was scoreless, but Lawrence put the game away early in the third.
Raymond scored on the power play just 42 seconds into the third to put the Vikings up 4-0. Brad Scurfield and Matt Hughes assisted on both of Raymond’s power-play goals.
DeSmit then took a pass from Scurfield and scored at the 2:57 mark to give Lawrence a 5-0 edge.
The Lions got goals from Collin Saint-Onge, Jake Watchorn and Nemanja Jankovic to cut the margin to 5-3.
The teams wrap up the two-game series on Saturday afternoon.
GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College men’s basketball team held off Lawrence University on Friday night and posted a 104-95 Midwest Conference victory at Darby Gymnasium.
Griffin Lentsch scored 19 points to lead five Grinnell (8-4, 3-4 MWC) players in double figures.
Erik Borresen had a double-double with 27 points and a career-high 18 rebounds to pace Lawrence (6-6, 5-2). Chris Siebert added 20 points and a team-high five assists.
Grinnell pulled away late in the first half, turning a four-point lead into a 15-point edge in less than 90 seconds. The Pioneers led 59-44 at the half.
Grinnell maintained that edge and built the lead to 20 at 91-71 with 7:12 remaining. Lawrence began chipping away at the lead and went on a 19-8 run, capped by Tyler Crisman’s 3-pointer, to cut the lead to 98-90 with 43 seconds left.
Grinnell went 6-for-8 from the foul line in the final 40 seconds to secure the win.
Lawrence was plagued by too many turnovers (23) and poor shooting from the field and the foul line. The Vikings were 35-for-62 from the field (56.5 percent), but that is not extraordinary against Grinnell. Lawrence also connected on only 24 of 37 free throws (64.9 percent).
The Vikings are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Monmouth College.
