Lawrence golfers tie Ripon in Battle At The Bog

SAUKVILLE, Wis. – The Lawrence University golf team played to a tie with Ripon College on Tuesday in the first Battle At The Bog. Lawrence and Ripon both fired a team score of 339. Lawrence’s Adam Ferguson and Jon Mays and Ripon’s Mike Kocher tied for medalist honors with a score of 81.

Ferguson leads Vikings to fifth-place finish at Carroll

Adam Ferguson tied for 13th place to lead the Lawrence University golf team at the Carroll Invitational on Sunday. Ferguson took 13th with a seven-over par 79 at Ironwood Golf Course. He led the Vikings to a fifth-place finish in the team standings.

Lawrence tennis fires shutout at Beloit

The Lawrence University men’s tennis team posted a 9-0 win over Beloit College on Sunday at the Lawrence Courts, and the Vikings only dropped one game in the process. The Vikings won four singles matches 6-0, 6-0, and won the other 6-1, 6-0. Lawrence won two doubles matches 8-0, and the Vikings won one singles match and one doubles matches by default.

Chicago sweeps doubleheader from Vikings on Friends of Jaclyn Day

The University of Chicago softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader against Lawrence University on Sunday at Whiting Field by the scores of 8-0 and 7-2 on Friends of Jaclyn Day.

The doubleheader was used to raise money for Friends of Jaclyn, an organization that pairs children with brain tumors with college and high school sports teams. The Vikings have adopted eight-year-old Emma Broeniman, and Chicago has adopted Jenna Jongsma. Both girls have neurofibromatosis type 1.

In the opener, Sarah Neuhaus and Jacqueline Ryan combined on a one-hit shutout for the Maroons (19-8-1). Neuhaus struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter in four innings to pick up the win.

Kathleen Duffy and Lauren White paced the Maroons with two hits apiece.

Chicago jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second and picked up run-scoring doubles from White and Vicky Tomaka.

The Maroons sealed the win with five runs in the fifth. Duffy and White both had run-scoring doubles in that inning, and Kim Cygan had a two-run single.

In the nightcap, Duffy, Julia Schneider, Samantha Hobson and Cygan had two hits apiece. Melissa Collins tossed three innings of relief to earn the win.

Chicago went up 2-0 in the top of the first as Duffy hit a solo homer in the inning. Lawrence (13-9) got a run back in the bottom of the first when Cathy Kaye doubled and scored.

Kaye and Alex Goodson both had two hits in the nightcap for Lawrence.

Chicago went up 5-1 with three runs in the third. Cygan highlighted the rally with a two-run single. The Maroons then tacked on two more runs in the fourth.

Lawrence closed the scoring on Goodson’s lead-off homer in the sixth.

Vikings roll to doubleheader sweep of Finlandia

The Lawrence University baseball team routed Finlandia University 11-0 and 15-2 to post a nonconference doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Don Hawkins Field.

The Vikings pounded out 23 hits in the doubleheader and got a pair of fine pitching performances.

In the opener, Andrew Wilt allowed only one hit over five innings to pick up the victory. He struck out seven and walked three.

A.J. Nathan paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Robert Rashid, Gabe Henriques and Michael Baldino had two hits apiece.

The Vikings (5-17) jumped on Finlandia (4-21) early by scoring three times in the first and three more times in the second. Davide Harris punctuated the second inning with a two-run homer.

Lawrence tacked on another run in the third on Baldino’s RBI double. The Vikings made it 9-0 in the fourth with a pair of runs, getting one on Andy Frelich’s run-scoring single.

The Vikings wrapped up the scoring in the sixth on run-scoring singles from Scoob Ransom and Henriques.

In the nightcap, Jake Johnson picked up his first collegiate victory. He went 5 2/3 innings and allowed three hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Rashid, Phil Wisniewski and Alex Brewer had two hits apiece for Lawrence in the nightcap

The Vikings gave Johnson all the offense he would need early. Lawrence scored twice in the first on a run-scoring single from Zach Owsley and Frelich’s RBI triple.

The Vikings then scored five times in the second on only two hits. Lawrence took advantage of two errors, a walk and a hit batsman.

Lawrence tacked on two more runs in the third and then put the game away with five runs in the fourth. The big blow in the fourth was Rashid’s two-run single.

Tyler Christ’s RBI double in the sixth finished the scoring for the Vikings.

Goodson powers Vikings to split with Beloit

Alex Goodson blasted a three-run homer and Shannon Murray tossed a two-hit shutout as the Lawrence University softball team split a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Beloit College on Saturday at Whiting Field.

Beloit won the opener 9-2 and Lawrence took the nightcap 9-0.

Goodson went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader with a double, a homer and four runs batted in.

Lawrence (13-7, 5-4 MWC) jumped on Beloit (8-21, 5-6) early in the nightcap by scoring three times in the first. Murray belted a two-out, two-run triple to put the Vikings up 2-0. Emily Perish followed with a double to score Murray.

A dropped fly ball with two outs opened the floodgates in the second. After Cathy Kaye reached on the error, Katie Simonson singled to score Kaye. After an infield single by Gaelen Lombard-Knapp, Goodson belted a towering three-run homer to left for a 7-0 lead.

The Vikings added a pair of unearned runs in the third for the 9-0 edge.

Murray went the distance in the five-inning contest. The only two hits Murray allowed both came in the fifth. Murray struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter.

Beloit got all the offense it would need in the first inning of the opener. The Bucs scored seven runs, all unearned, to take control. Tess Jacquez had a two-run double in the inning, and Lawrence committed three errors in the frame.

Lawrence got both of its runs in the third. Dani Cherry tripled and scored on an error, and Goodson picked up a run-scoring double.

Katy Sandt went the distance to get the win. She struck out eight and walked four. Perish went the distance and took the loss.

Sarah Stariha went 4-for-4 in the opener to pace the Beloit offense. Goodson was 3-for-3 for the Vikings.

Key hits elude Vikings in loss to MSOE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Lawrence University baseball team couldn’t come up with key hits on Thursday and dropped a 6-3 nonconference decision to the Milwaukee School of Engineering at Henry Aaron Field.

Lawrence (3-17) pounded out 12 hits but stranded nine runners in the contest. Ben Hansen allowed 10 hits over eight innings but picked up the win. He struck out eight and walked one. Conor Heneghan took the loss.

MSOE (8-16) got three hits from Mike Brunette and he scored three runs. Robert Rashid went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in to pace the Vikings. Rashid, who leads the nation in stolen bases, picked up a pair of steals. Davide Harris went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs for Lawrence.

MSOE jumped ahead with four runs on five hits in the second inning. Lawrence cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the top half of the third. Rashid and Luke Kostreva both had run-scoring singles in the inning.

Lawrence, which stranded at least one runner in every inning but the first and eighth, added another run in the ninth on Rashid’s run-scoring single.

The Vikings got a solid relief performance from freshman Sam Ausloos, who pitched three innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit, struck out two and walked one.

Lawrence softball to host Friends of Jaclyn Day on Sunday

The Lawrence University softball team has shown its skill this season, but the Vikings’ heart will be on display Sunday.

Lawrence is staging a Friends of Jaclyn Day for Sunday’s doubleheader against the University of Chicago at Whiting Field. The first pitch is set for 11 a.m.

The Vikings have “adopted” Emma Broeniman, an eight-year-old from Appleton who suffers from neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). The softball squad got connected with Broeniman through Friends of Jaclyn, an organization that matches children in need of love, support and friendship with a college or high school sports team.

“I do believe that our participation in this program could be our single greatest accomplishment this season,” Lawrence head coach Kim Tatro said. “It’s that special and has that much of an impact.”

The Friends of Jaclyn Day is intended to be a celebration and a fundraiser, Tatro said. Fans attending the doubleheader will be able to make donations to Friends of Jaclyn, participate in a 50-50 raffle and bid on silent auction items.

Broeniman is currently going through her third round of chemotherapy at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison for an optic chiasm glimoa, which is a tumor that affects the optic chiasm. Broeniman has lost all the vision in her left eye.

Broeniman also suffers from pseudoarthrosis, a side effect of NF-1 that causes tibia to break and not heal.

A unique aspect to Sunday’s doubleheader will be the meeting between Broeniman and Jenna Rose Jongsma. She is an eight-year-old with NF-1 and has been adopted by the Chicago squad. Jongsma, who is being treated at the University of Chicago Medical Center, and her family will join the Maroons for the trip to Appleton.

Because of the unique and rare nature of the medical condition of the two girls, the two families have known and supported each other for years but have never met.

“We are very excited to have the chance to celebrate the Friends of Jaclyn program and our relationships with Emma and Jenna,” Tatro said. “What makes this weekend especially unique is the fact that both teams are participating and benefitting from this program.”
