Big first half leads St. Norbert past Vikings

DE PERE, Wis. — Katie Vanden Avond scored four first-half goals to lead the St. Norbert College women’s soccer team to a 6-1 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University on Wednesday at Schneider Stadium.

Vanden Avond’s four goals were sandwiched around a tally by Lawrence’s Casey Merkle, and the Green Knights led 4-1 at the break.

The Green Knights added a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes to complete the scoring.

Kumbalek earns MWC Defensive Player of the Week honors

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University volleyball standout Katie Kumbalek has been named the Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Kumbalek (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek), a freshman defensive specialist, led the defensive effort for Lawrence as the Vikings swept a pair of Midwest Conference road matches this past weekend.

In a 3-1 win at Lake Forest College last Friday, Kumbalek picked up 21 digs, her fourth 20-plus dig match of the season, as Lawrence limited Lake Forest to a .109 hitting percentage.

In a 3-0 win at Beloit College on Saturday, Kumbalek had 16 digs as Beloit hit a minus-.028 for the match.

On the weekend, Kumbalek averaged 5.29 digs per set.

It was Lawrence’s first MWC Player of the Week honor since Arianna Cohen took the offensive award on Oct. 7, 2014.

With the wins, Lawrence improved to 3-2 in Midwest Conference play. The Vikings return to action on Friday at Knox College and then travel to Monmouth College on Saturday.

Ley, Schuster fire identical scores to pace Vikings at MSOE Invitational

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — Nathan Ley and Nigel Schuster fired identical scores on Sunday and Monday to lead the Lawrence University golf team at the MSOE Invitational.

Ley and Schuster both finished with a 36-hole total of 167 to tie for 48th place. Both players fired an 85 on Sunday on the par-71 layout at The Highlands at Grand Geneva. Ley and Schuster followed that with an 82 on the par-72 layout at The Brute on Monday.

Lawrence finished 12th in the team standings after carding rounds of 345 and 331 for a score of 676. Edgewood College won the team title at 587.

Also competing for the Vikings were Austin Frank (T53, 169), Ryan Clark (T60, 173) and Ryan Eardley (66th, 177).

Big second half leads Knox past Lawrence

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Knox College men’s soccer team scored four times in the second half to down Lawrence University 4-1 in a Midwest Conference match on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, Knox’s Jake Ly scored less than five minutes into the second half to give the Prairie Fire a 1-0 edge. Joe Dyer then scored twice in a six-minute span to help seal the victory for Knox.

Taylor Reifert scored in the 81st minute for Lawrence’s lone tally.

Justin Dunn made one save to get the win for Knox, which had a 16-3 edge in shots.

Prairie Fire edges Lawrence

GALESBURG, Ill. — A first-half goal proved to be the difference as the Knox College women’s soccer team defeated Lawrence University 1-0 on Sunday in a Midwest Conference game.

Sydney Fretwell scored an unassisted goal at the 37:05 mark to lift the Prairie Fire (10-1-2, 3-0-2 MWC).

Sierra Daniger made two saves to get the shutout for Knox. Patsy Kealey stopped 11 shots for the Vikings (6-5-0, 1-2-0).

Grinnell blanks Vikings

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College women’s tennis team posted a 9-0 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University on Sunday.

Grinnell improves to 7-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference. Lawrence falls to 7-8, 2-5 in the league.

Vikings sweep past Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 Midwest Conference sweep of Beloit College on Saturday at Flood Arena.

Lawrence won the match 25-15, 25-16, 25-16.

Arianna Neumeyer paced Lawrence’s attack with 12 kills, and Arianna Cohen and Sydney Nelson had five kills apiece. Nelson also picked up a match-high 22 assists and added a pair of aces and 11 digs. Lawrence libero Katie Kumbalek paced the Vikings (4-16, 3-2 MWC) with 16 digs.

The Vikings hit .228 as a team, compared to a minus-.028 for the Bucs (3-13, 0-4).

Lawrence has now won three of its last four matches.

Illinois College nips Vikings

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — Joe Tooley’s goal in the 63rd minute was the lone score as the Illinois College men’s soccer team defeated Lawrence University 1-0 in a Midwest Conference match on Saturday at England Field.

Tooley scored off a cross from Austin Cearlock at the 62:48 mark to give Illinois College the lead for good.

Ty Clearwater had to make just one save to pick up the shutout for the Blueboys (9-2-0, 3-0-0 MWC). Joe Krivit stopped four shots for the Vikings (1-8-1, 0-2-0).

Lawrence was limited to just four shots for the match, and Illinois College had 10.

Vikings fall short at Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Lawrence University football team fell short with a second-half rally Saturday at Grinnell College and dropped a 28-20 non-conference decision to the Pioneers at Rosenbloom Field.

Lawrence (1-4) trailed 28-14 at the half but held the Pioneers scoreless after the break. The Vikings got a pair of field goals from Pat O’Mahoney but couldn’t reach the end zone in the second half.

Lawrence quarterback Ryan Butterfield completed 13-of-25 passes for 117 yards, and ran 12 times for 68 yards. Freshman Terrence Simon ran five times for 85 yards and scored his first collegiate touchdown for the Vikings. Sophomore Donnel Haley added 61 yards on 14 carries for the Vikings.

Grinnell quarterback Sam Poulos was 17-of-26 for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

Grinnell (1-3) built a 21-7 lead with the help of touchdown passes of 67 and 19 yards by Poulos. Lawrence sliced the lead to 21-14 after Simon ripped off a 66-yard run with 3:05 left in the second quarter.

Emmi Sandoval then returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown to push Grinnell’s lead to 28-14 at the half. Lawrence had not allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown since Lake Forest’s Casey Urlacher did it back in 2001.

The Vikings trimmed the lead to 28-17 when O’Mahoney booted a 30-yard field goal with 6:54 left in the third quarter. The Vikings cut the advantage to 28-20 when O’Mahoney connected on a 34-yard field with 5:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, but that’s as close as Lawrence would get.

Lawrence won the statistical battle as the Vikings out-gained Grinnell 351-301. Lawrence piled up 210 yards on the ground and averaged 5.0 yards per carry.

Merkle’s goal lifts Lawrence as Vikings pitch shutout at Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — Casey Merkle’s goal in the 17th minute Saturday proved to be the difference as the Lawrence University women’s soccer team defeated Illinois College 1-0 in a Midwest Conference match at England Field.

Merkle scored at 16:26 as she got the ball over the head of goalkeeper Cat Solberg for the only score of the match.

Lawrence goalkeeper Patsy Kealey made five saves to earn the shutout for Lawrence (6-4-0, 1-1-0 MWC). Solberg stopped 11 shots for the Lady Blues (3-6-2, 0-2-1). Lawrence had a 17-11 edge in shots.
