Olsson takes eighth at Forester Invitational

VERNON HILLS, Ill. — Anton Olsson paced the Lawrence University golf team with a tie for eighth place at the Forester Invitational on Sunday.

Olsson fired a 4-over par 76 at White Deer Run Golf Club and finished six shots off the pace set by P.J. Clemins of Concordia (Wis.) University.

Lawrence finished ninth in the team standings with a score of 345. Concordia won the title at 302.

Nigel Schuster shot 84, Ryan Clark carded an 88 and Ryan Eardley shot 97 to round out the scoring for the Vikings.

Green Knights take two from Lawrence

DE PERE, Wis. — The St. Norbert College baseball team swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Sunday at Van Alstine Field.

St. Norbert took the opener 12-7 and won the nightcap 7-2.

In the opening game, St. Norbert pulled out to a 5-1 lead and then withstood a Lawrence rally.

Jake Gordon went 3-for-5 with a homer, and Matthew Holliday went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles for the Vikings (7-14, 1-7 MWC).

The Green Knights led 5-1 after two innings and were up 10-2 before Lawrence rallied in the sixth. The Vikings had seven hits in the inning, including run-scoring hits by Joel Birch, Travis Weber and Anthony Ortiz, to trim the lead to 10-7.

St. Norbert responded by scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win.

In the nightcap, Brendan Hermann limited Lawrence to six hits and two runs over six innings to pick up the win. Derek Klegin went 4-for-5 and scored three runs for the Green Knights (13-10, 5-3).

St. Norbert led 3-0 after the first, but the Vikings chipped away at the lead. Lawrence got a run in the third when Brandon Klar singled and scored on Luke Zablocki’s sacrifice fly. The Vikings trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fifth when Gordon doubled and scored on Zablocki’s double.

St. Norbert countered with two runs in the sixth and then added single runs in the seventh and eighth to seal the win.

Gordon and Jake Mills both went 2-for-4, and Zablocki was 2-for-3 and drove in both runs.

Cornell powers to win over Lawrence

JANESVILLE, Wis. — The Cornell College softball team hit five home runs, three by Kendra Christensen, and powered to a 9-1 victory over Lawrence University on Sunday at the Midwest Conference Classic.

In addition to Christensen’s three homers, Kylea Weber and Melissa Orton also went deep for the Rams (22-4, 6-1 MWC). Christensen went 3-for-3, scored three runs and drove in six to pace Cornell’s 16-hit attack.

Lawrence (16-8, 5-3) finished with a 4-2 record against the South Division in the crossover tournament.

Sam Belletini and Savanna Marsicek both went 2-for-3 for the Vikings, and Kori Looker’s solo homer in the second provided Lawrence’s only run.

Liz Barthels started for the Vikings but lasted only two innings and took the loss. Jesse Applehans went the distance for Cornell to pick up the win.

Vikings get walk-off win over Lake Forest

JANESVILLE, Wis. — The Lawrence University softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday for a 4-3 walk-off win over Lake Forest College at the Midwest Conference Classic.

Lawrence (16-7, 5-2 MWC) trailed 3-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth, but Sam Belletini led off the inning with a single. After an error on Kori Looker’s bunt attempt, Lawrence had runners at second and third.

Lake Forest retired the next two hitters with no damage, but Tierney Duffy’s two-out, two-run single to center field scored both runners to give Lawrence the victory.

Belletini, who homered, and Duffy both went 2-for-4, and Duffy finished with three runs batted in.

A two-run homer gave Lake Forest (22-5, 8-1) a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth, but Lawrence countered in the bottom of the sixth. Belletini led off the sixth with a homer to trim the lead to 2-1, and Looker followed with a single. After a pair of outs, Duffy doubled to score Looker and tie the game at 2-2.

Jessi Werner came on in relief for the eighth inning and took the loss.

Olsson ties for seventh at Wisconsin Lutheran

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Anton Olsson tied for seventh place on Saturday to lead the Lawrence University golf team at the Wisconsin Lutheran College Invitational.

Olsson shot a 4-over par 76 at Morningstar Golfers Club in Waukesha. Pete Kaufmann of Wisconsin Lutheran won the event with a 73.

Lawrence finished 13th in the team standings with a score of 347. Benedictine (Ill.) University won the team title at 305.

Rounding out the scoring for the Vikings were Nigel Schuster (84), Ryan Eardley (92) and Nathan Ley (95).

Schrobilgen, Erickson pace Vikings at Wisconsin Lutheran

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Erin Schrobilgen won the steeplechase and Cole Erickson placed in the top three in two events to lead the Lawrence University track teams at the Wisconsin Lutheran Warrior Invitational.

Schrobilgen won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:30.40 to lead the Lawrence women. Kate Kilgus grabbed second in the 800 meters in 2:28.15, and Genna Matt placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 121 feet, 9 inches.

The Lawrence women placed fourth in the team standings with 74 points.

Erickson grabbed third in the javelin with a throw of 129-4 and took third in the high jump with a leap of 5-3. Ethan Gniot raced to second in the 800 meters in a time of 1:58.29, and Cam Davies grabbed second in the steeplechase in 10:02.86.

The Lawrence men took fifth in the team standings with 76.5 points.

Illinois College rallies past Lawrence

JANESVILLE, Wis. — The Illinois College softball team exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a 7-1 win over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Midwest Conference Classic.

Lawrence (15-7, 4-2 MWC) was holding a 1-0 edge, but the Lady Blues (9-13, 3-5) had six hits to score seven times in the sixth.

Sierra McDonald had a pair of doubles in the sixth inning for Illinois College and finished 2-for-4. Kinzie Verhines and Hannah Knapper also picked up a pair of his for the Lady Blues.

Kara Vance allowed seven hits and five runs and took the loss for Lawrence. Amanda Price scattered seven hits, struck out one and walked four to pick up the win. She also stranded seven Lawrence runners.

Sam Belletini went 2-for-2 to pace the Lawrence offense.

Lawrence scored its lone run in the second when Taylor Dodson walked and later scored on Vance’s single.

Lawrence uses the long ball to down Scots

JANESVILLE, Wis. — The Lawrence University softball team blasted three home runs and rolled to a 6-1 victory over Monmouth College at the Midwest Conference Classic.

Amanda Jaskolski, Sam Belletini and Tierney Duffy all homered for the Vikings (15-6, 4-1 MWC), who ran their win streak to six games. Jaskolski finished 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and two runs scored.

Liz Barthels went the distance to get the win for the Vikings. She scattered eight hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Lawrence took a 2-0 lead in the third when Savanna Marsicek walked and Jaskolski belted her eighth home run of the season.

The Vikings made it 4-0 in the fourth when Katie Schumacher was hit by a pitch and Duffy followed with a two-run homer.

Lawrence increased the lead to 6-0 with another round-tripper in the fifth. Jaskolski singled and then scored when Belletini homered for the second consecutive day.

Lawrence scored all six runs against Monmouth starter Alyssa Edler, who alloed five hits, struck out four and walked three.

Monmouth (6-17, 2-6) broke up the shutout with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Lake Forest shuts out Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team fell 9-0 to Lake Forest College in a Midwest Conference match on Saturday at the Lawrence Courts.

The Vikings (10-11, 4-3 MWC) were playing with No. 1 singles and doubles standout David Jumes, and the Foresters took advantage.

Pioneers top Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team dropped a 7-2 Midwest Conference decision to Carroll University on Saturday at the Lawrence Courts.

Lawrence (10-10, 4-2 MWC) picked up a win at No. 3 doubles where Sotaro Kurahashi and Mitch Kasprzyk won 8-4. Adam Busch also won at No. 4 singles where he topped Eric Schneider 6-3, 6-4.
