Saturday’s baseball doubleheader postponed; Sunday games pushed back
APPLETON, Wis. — Rain has forced the postponement of Saturday’s Lawrence University vs. Carroll University baseball doubleheader at Whiting Field. No make-up date has been set. Sunday’s Lawrence at Carroll doubleheader at Frame Park in Waukesha has been pushed back to a 3 p.m. start.
Start time moved up for Saturday’s baseball doubleheader
APPLETON, Wis. — The start time for Saturday’s baseball doubleheader has been changed due to the forecast of rain. Lawrence University will face Carroll University at Whiting Field at noon, which is an hour earlier than originally scheduled. The Vikings then travel to play at Carroll on Sunday.
Marian picks up win over Vikings
FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The Marian University baseball team jumped on Lawrence University early on Wednesday and didn’t let up in a 16-5 nonconference victory at Herr-Baker Field.
The Sabres (10-9) scored four times in the bottom of the first, added two more in the third and then scored four times in both the fourth and fifth innings to seal the win.
Tommy Dugandzic went 3-for-3 with a double and drove in five runs to pace Marian’s 16-hit attack. Jake Gordon went 3-for-5 and Aaron Benz was 2-for-4 and both drove in a run to pace Lawrence (3-12).
Brett Barger allowed three hits and three runs over five innings to pick up the win. Joe Krivit went 2.1 innings and allowed six runs to take the loss.
Vikings split doubleheader with Beloit
APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University baseball team got a standout pitching performance to earn a split of a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Beloit College on Tuesday at Whiting Field.
Lawrence (3-11, 1-3 MWC) won the opener 4-1, and Beloit (11-7, 3-1) took the nightcap 16-3 and turned a triple play.
Atley Gay went the distance in the opener to lead the Vikings to the victory in the opener. He allowed six hits and no earned runs while striking out three and walking two.
Beloit led 1-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth, but Sam Kossow led off the bottom half of the inning with a single for the Vikings. Luke Zablocki then blasted his second homer of the season to put Lawrence up 2-1. Brandon Vamarasi followed with a double, and Dan Taylor belted his first homer of the season two batters later to put Lawrence up 4-1.
Zablocki finished 2-for-4 to pace the Lawrence offense.
Craig Vruwink went four inning and allowed all four runs to take the loss for the Bucs.
In the nightcap, Lawrence had built a 3-1 lead through five innings, when the Bucs tied it with a pair of runs in the sixth against Lawrence starter Phil Clark. The Bucs then got three more runs in the seventh on just two hits but got some help with a walk, hit batsman and an error to lead 6-3.
Beloit then blew the game open with 10 runs in the eighth to lead 16-3. Beloit had just five hits in the inning, but Lawrence pitchers issued five walks in the inning.
The Vikings started the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles when Joel Birch’s line drive was snared by second baseman Adrian Peil. He made a diving catch then flipped to second for one out, and the relay throw went back to first for a triple play.
Kossow and Zablocki both had two hits in the nightcap for Lawrence.
Jerrick Habecker went 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Clark pitched seven innings and took the loss.
Sunday’s baseball doubleheader vs. Beloit postponed
APPLETON, Wis. — Sunday’s Lawrence University baseball doubleheader vs. Beloit College has been postponed due to conditions at Whiting Field. It has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Vikings drop pair to Beloit
BELOIT, Wis. — The Beloit College baseball team tossed a shutout in the opener and then got an unearned run late to pull out the nightcap in a Midwest Conference sweep of Lawrence University on Saturday at Strong Stadium.
Beloit won the opener 5-0 and took the nightcap 4-3.
In the first game, Ryan Kaveney went the distance in tossing a four-hit shutout. He struck out 13 and did not walk a batter. The Vikings (2-10, 0-2 MWC) had only one runner reach as far as third base.
Davis Ogilvie allowed four hits in 4.2 innings and took the loss. He struck out seven and walked five. Seven Beloit players had one hit apiece and Ethan Blumenthal drove in two runs for the Bucs (10-6, 2-0).
In the second game, Beloit broke a 3-3 tie with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Gulve reached on an error and got to third with the help of a single and another error. He then scored on Alex Lawrence’s fielder’s choice ground ball to put the Bucs up 4-3.
Lawrence had a chance to tie it in the eighth after Luke Zablocki delivered a two-out double. Pinch-runner Brandon Klar moved to third after an error on pitcher Jim Leyhane, but Gabe Warshaw struck out to end the threat.
The Vikings had a threat against reliever Andrew Kane in the ninth after Max Markoff’s one-out single, but Brandon Vamarasi grounded into a game-ending double play.
Zablocki went 3-for-3 with three doubles and drove in a pair of runs in a three-run first inning for the Vikings. Alex Lawrence went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for Beloit.
Leyhane went eight innings, allowed nine hits, struck out seven and walked one to get the win. Drew Doares went seven innings, allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked three to take the loss.
The teams finish the four-game series on Sunday at Whiting Field.
Baseball sites switched for games this weekend
APPLETON, Wis. — The sites for Lawrence University’s baseball doubleheaders with Beloit College set for this weekend have been switched.
Lawrence will now play at Beloit at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday’s doubleheader will be at Lawrence’s Whiting Field at 1 p.m.
Vikings drop pair to Lewis and Clark
TUCSON, Ariz. — The Lewis and Clark College baseball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Thursday by the scores of 8-1 and 14-7.
In the opener, Michael Kinkenon and Hayden Higger had two hits apiece to lead the Pioneers. Jake Gordon went 2-for-4 to pace the Vikings in the opener.
Lawrence (2-8) led 1-0 in the top of the fourth when Davis Ogilvie’s single scored Joel Birch with the game’s first run. The Pioneers struck for three in the bottom half of the inning and then sealed the win with five more runs in the fifth.
In the nightcap, Lewis and Clark used a big six-run fourth inning to take the lead and then pulled away late.
Gordon went 3-for-4, and Birch and Aaron Benz both had two hits for the Vikings. Benz and Brandon Vamarasi each drove in a pair of runs for Lawrence.
Bradley Lezak went 3-for-4 and scored four runs for the Pioneers (8-12-1), and Kinkenon drove in four runs.
Lawrence built a 4-1 lead through three innings, but the Pioneers collected six hits and six runs in the fourth to grab a 7-4 edge. Lawrence countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Lewis and Clark sealed the win with two runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh.
Buena Vista tops Vikings
TUCSON, Ariz. — The No. 25 Buena Vista University baseball team jumped on Lawrence University early and never let up in a 20-3 nonconference victory on Wednesday.
Lawrence (2-6) scored three times in the top of the first to take the lead, but the Beavers (11-1) regained the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Buena Vista scored three times in both the second and third, added a single run in the fourth and ended the game with nine runs in the sixth.
Tanner Truesdell went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs for the Beavers, who collected 21 hits.
Sam Kossow went 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings, who were limited to six hits.
Tyson Valentine pitched 2.2 innings of relief to earn the victory. Atley Gay allowed 12 hits over four innings and took the loss for Lawrence.
The Vikings wrap up their spring break trip on Thursday with a pair of games against Lewis and Clark.
