Vikings pick up doubleheader split with Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University baseball team powered to a win in game one of Saturday’s Midwest Conference doubleheader with Beloit College, but the Bucs rode strong pitching to pick up a split.

Lawrence won the opener 13-6, and Beloit took the nightcap 14-1.

In the opener, Matt Holliday went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and drove in six runs for the Vikings (7-10, 1-3 MWC). Jake Gordon went 3-for-5, homered, drove in four runs and scored five times for Lawrence.

Atley Gay was strong on the mound for Lawrence as he allowed just one earned run over 7.1 innings to pick up the win. He struck out five and walked two.

Holliday got Lawrence on the board with a two-run single in the first and then added a run scoring double in the third for a 3-0 lead. Jake Mills picked up a two-run single as part of a three-run fourth, and the Vikings led 6-0.

Lawrence was up 7-1 when Gordon blasted a two-run homer in the seventh. The Vikings added four more runs in the eighth as Gordon had a two-run single and Holliday added a two-run double.

In the nightcap, Colton Lopez allowed only four hits in going the distance for Beloit (13-7, 3-1).

Ryan Kaveney and Austin Martinez both went 3-for-4 with Kaveney driving in four runs and Martinez three.

Zach Rabideau started for Lawrence but allowed six runs over two innings and took the loss.

Beloit takes two from Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. — The Beloit College baseball team used big innings in both games on Thursday to sweep a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University at Whiting Field.

The Bucs won the opener 13-3 and took the nightcap 12-7.

In the first game, Beloit (12-6, 2-0 MWC) scored four times in the third inning and then exploded for seven runs in the fourth to seal the victory.

Austin Martinez went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs, and Alex Lawrence went 2-for-4, scored three runs and drove in three more to pace the Bucs.

Beloit got a standout pitching performance in the opener from Ryan Kaveney, who went the distance. He allowed seven hits, struck out 10 and walked four. Matt Holliday gave up eight runs in the first three innings and took the loss for Lawrence (6-9, 0-2).

Joel Birch and Zach Rabideau both went 2-for-3 to lead Lawrence’s offense in the first game.

Beloit jumped on top early in the second game by scoring five times in the second inning. The Bucs led 5-1 before tacking on single runs in the fourth and fifth, and Beloit scored five runs in the final three innings to seal the win. Jake Parrott went 3-for-4 to pace Beloit’s 17-hit attack in the nightcap.

Lawrence pounded out 15 hits in the second game but stranded 10 runners. Brandon Klar went 3-for-5, scored two runs and drove in two more with a two-run homer in the eighth for the Vikings. Jake Mills went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, and Luke Zablocki finished 3-for-4 and drove in a run.

Jim Leyhane went seven innings and gave up three runs to pick up the win. Drew Doares lasted 4.2 innings and gave up seven runs to take the loss.

Vikings sweep pair from Thomas

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Lawrence University baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Florida by sweeping a nonconference doubleheader from Thomas (Maine) College on Saturday.

Lawrence won the opener 8-7 and took the nightcap 7-4.

The Vikings posted a 6-3 record in Florida and improved to 6-7 overall.

In the opener, Lawrence used two big innings to surge ahead. The Vikings trailed 5-2 before scoring three times in the top of the sixth inning to tie it. Freshman Travis Weber had a three-run double in the inning and finished 2-for-5 on the day.

Thomas (2-6) countered with a run in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead back to 6-5, but Lawrence answered in the top of the seventh. The Vikings scored three times in the inning as a pair of freshmen came up big. Jake Mills had a run-scoring single, and pinch-hitter Carl Olsen smacked a two-run single to put the Vikings up 8-6.

Kelton Jenkins gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth but stopped the Terriers after that to pick up the save. Kyle Duex earned the win in relief of starter Atley Gay.

In the nightcap, a three-run eighth inning lifted the Vikings to the win.

Lawrence trailed 3-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth, but Joel Birch’s two-run single pushed the Vikings to a 4-3 advantage.

Thomas tied it with a run in the top of the eighth, but Lawrence answered in the bottom half of the inning. Brandon Klar’s two-run double capped a three-run outburst that gave Lawrence a 7-4 lead.

Philip Clark pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save. Birch worked two innings of relief to get the win, and Anthony Ortiz went 2-for-5 for the Vikings.

Colby takes two from Vikings

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Colby College baseball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Friday by the scores of 6-4 and 9-8.

In the opener, Colby (9-1) broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth. The Mules then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Brandon Klar led off the seventh for Lawrence with a double and then scored on Jake Gordon’s single to trim the lead to 6-4. Tommy Forese then retired the next three Vikings in order to nail down the save.

Gordon went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and a run driven in. Luke Zablocki and Davis Ogilvie both went 2-for-4 for the Vikings (4-7).

In the nine-inning nightcap, Colby rallied from an 8-4 deficit to pick up the win. Lawrence scored twice in the top of the first before Colby tied it, but the Vikings got three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to go up 6-2.

Colby battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Lawrence countered with two more in the top of the sixth. Colby got two in the bottom of the sixth to trim the lead to 8-6 and added three more in the seventh to take the lead for good.

Robert Donohue picked up the win in relief, and Forese pitched a perfect ninth to get his second save of the day.

Joel Birch went 3-for-4 with a run batted in, and Matthew Holliday and Kyle Duex had two hits apiece for the Vikings.

 

Mills’ clutch double in 12th lifts Lawrence past RPI

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Freshman Jake Mills delivered a clutch two-run double in the 12th inning to lift the Lawrence University baseball team to an 8-6 nonconference victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday.

Davis Ogilvie tossed four innings of scoreless, one-hit relief to earn the victory for Lawrence (4-5). He struck out three and walked one.

Matthew Holliday went 3-for-6, scored two runs and drove in a run to pace the Vikings’ 10-hit attack. Mills finished 2-for-6 with two runs batted in, and Luke Zablocki and Joel Birch both drove in a pair of runs.

The game was tied at 6-6 headed to the top of the 12th when the Vikings got consecutive one-out singles from Holliday, Anthony Ortiz and Ogilvie to load the bases. After a strikeout, Mills delivered a double to score Holliday and Ortiz, and Ogilvie was thrown out at the plate to end the frame.

Ogilvie worked around a two-out error in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

RPI (4-4) led 2-0 before the Vikings scored three times in the third on one hit. Lawrence benefited from a walk and two errors, and Birch then delivered a two-run double to give the Vikings a 3-2 edge.

Lawrence pushed the lead to 5-2 with two more runs in the fourth. Brandon Klar had a run-scoring single, and Zablocki drove in another run on a fielder’s choice.

The Vikings led 6-3 before the Engineers scored three times in the seventh to tie it.

Vikings earn split with Elmhurst

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Lawrence University baseball team rallied late in the second game and picked up a nonconference split with Elmhurst College on Saturday.

Lawrence (3-5) took the nightcap 7-4, and the Bluejays (4-4) won the opener 24-11.

Zach Rabideau went 2-for-3 and Joel Birch was 2-for-4 to pace the Vikings’ attack. Philip Clark pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to get the win, and Kelton Jenkins tossed a scoreless ninth for the save.

The Vikings trailed 4-3 heading into the eighth, but Lawrence scored twice in the eighth and two more times in the ninth to pick up the win.

Walks to Luke Zablocki and Birch started the go-ahead rally in the eighth. Zablocki later scored on a fielder’s choice to tie it at 4-4, and Birch scored on a booted ground ball to put the Vikings up 5-4.

Brandon Klar and Matthew Holliday started the ninth with singles, and Zablocki and Birch both came through with sacrifice flies to give Lawrence a pair of insurance runs.

Jenkins gave up a single and walk in the ninth but worked out of the jam to get the save.

In the opener, Elmhurst broke the game open in the middle innings and kept on scoring.

Freshman Jake Mills led Lawrence’s attack by going 2-for-5 with his first collegiate homer and four runs batted in. Holliday went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a pair. Klar and Anthony Ortiz also had two hits, and Travis Weber drove in a pair of run.

Lawrence led 8-2 after a six-run second inning, highlighted by Mills’ two-run homer. Elmhurst came back with five runs in the fourth to trim the margin to 8-7, and the Bluejays then scored seven times in the fifth to go up 14-8.

Elmhurst added four runs in the seventh and six more in the eighth to seal the win.

Vikings sweep pair from Crown

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Lawrence University baseball team put on an impressive offensive display as it romped to a nonconference doubleheader sweep of Crown College on Friday.

Lawrence won the opener 21-1 and took the nightcap 9-5.

In the first game, the Vikings (2-4) pounded out 15 hits, and both Matthew Holliday and Jake Gordon nearly tied school records.

Holliday went 3-for-5 with a homer and a double and drove in eight runs, one shy of Andrew Wong’s Lawrence game record. Jake Gordon went 4-for-5 with a double and triple, three runs batted in and five runs scored, also one shy of tying Sam Kossow’s school record.

Tim Kinsella went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, and Brandon Klar reached base in all four of his plate appearances with a single and three walks and scored four times.

Lawrence scored in every inning but the third. The Vikings tallied three runs in the first and stretched the lead to 7-1 after two innings. Gordon had a run-scoring double in the first, and both Gordon and Klar had RBI singles in the second.

Lawrence added three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings with Holliday clubbing a two-run homer in the fourth. The Vikings erupted in the sixth as Holliday had a two-run double and Gordon picked up a run-scoring triple.

Drew Doares went the distance for Lawrence to get the win. He allowed six hits, struck out five and walked one.

In the nightcap, Lawrence jumped out to an 8-1 lead after five innings and went on to the win.

Kinsella went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Holliday was 3-for-4 and drove in a pair. Gordon and Davis Ogilvie both went 2-for-3 for the Vikings.

Lawrence was up 2-1 when the Vikings scored three times in the fourth on an RBI double from Gordon and run-scoring singles from both Kinsella and Kyle Duex.

Lawrence stretched the lead to 8-1 with three more runs in the fifth. Both Kinsella and Holliday had run-scoring singles in the inning.

Crown cut the lead to 8-5 with four runs in the sixth, but the Vikings tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.

Freshman Zach Rabideau went five-plus innings to pick up his first collegiate win. He allowed six hits, struck out three and walked three.

Miscue on final play lifts North Central past Lawrence

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — An error on the final play of the game Sunday allowed two North Central College runs to score, and the Cardinals pulled out a 5-4 nonconference win over Lawrence University at Lenz Field.

The Vikings (0-4) led 4-3, but North Central (3-1) had loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. With a full count and the runners going, the ball was grounded to second baseman Brandon Klar. He fielded it cleanly, but Klar’s throw was dropped and two runs scored to give North Central the win.

Lawrence led 3-1 before the North Central scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Vikings then took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the ninth. Freshman Travis Weber tripled and scored on Tim Kinsella’s single to put the Vikings back on top.

Weber went 3-for-4 with a triple and drove in a run to pace Lawrence. Davis Ogilvie had a pair of hits, both doubles, and Jake Gordon also went 2-for-4 for the Vikings.

Atley Gay went seven strong innings for Lawrence. He allowed five hits and no earned runs while striking out one and walking two.

Luther stops Lawrence

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — The Luther College baseball team broke the game open in the sixth inning and went on to a 12-4 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Sunday at Lenz Field.

Luther (2-1) was nursing a 4-3 lead when the Norse scored three times in the sixth to take control. The Norse added a run in the seventh and four more in the eighth to seal the victory.

Luther scored twice in the first, but Lawrence grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of third. Jake Gordon’s two-run double was the key hit in the inning for the Vikings. Luther countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead back at 4-3.

Drew Doares, who competed in fencing’s NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday, was the starter and went 4.2 innings. He allowed seven hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter. Blake Peterson started and got the win for Luther.

Carleton rallies late to nip Lawrence

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — The Carleton College baseball team rallied from three-run deficit to pull out a 9-8 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Lenz Field.

The Knights trailed 6-3 after six innings but erupted for five runs in the seventh and then scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

After Carleton’s big bottom of the seventh gave the Knights a 8-6 lead, Lawrence rallied in the top of the eighth. Joel Birch doubled to score Carl Olsen, and Tim Kinsella followed with another double to score Birch and tie the game at 8-8.

Birch and Kinsella both went 2-for-5 to pace the Vikings.

A hit batsman and double by Hayden Tsutsui started the winning rally for the Knights in the bottom of the eighth. After the Vikings threw a runner out at home, Tsutsui scored on a sacrifice fly to give Carleton the lead for good.

The Vikings grabbed a 6-2 lead with a five-run third inning. Luke Zablocki belted a two-run homer in the frame, and freshman Travis Weber hit his first career homer, a solo, shot in the inning.

Matthew Holliday pitched six strong innings for the Vikings but took the no-decision.
