Lawrence’s Rashid named summer league Hitter of the Year

Lawrence University baseball standout Robert Rashid has been named the River Valley League Hitter of the Year.

Rashid (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) hit .382 and led the summer league in seven statistical categories. The Lawrence center fielder was tops in the league in hits (34), runs scored (29), runs batted in (23), triples (7), stolen bases (26), on-base percentage (.522) and slugging percentage (.551).

Rashid, who played for the Waves, was a first-team All-RVL selection.

The River Valley League is based in Dubuque, Iowa, and is make up of college baseball players from around the nation.

Rashid, who will be a senior in the fall, had a great 2010 season for Lawrence. He was a first-team All-Midwest Conference selection and earned third-team All-Central Region honors. Rashid also was chosen for the Central Region’s Gold Glove team.

Rashid hit a team-high .366 with 10 doubles, two triples and 23 RBIs for Lawrence. Rashid was one of the nation’s leaders in stolen bases per game. He swiped 32 bases in 36 games, an average of .889 per game. Rashid also led the Vikings with 33 runs scored.

Seven newcomers to join Lawrence volleyball team

The Lawrence University volleyball team gets seven new faces for the 2010 season, according to Vikings head coach Matt Schoultz.

Six players from Wisconsin – Brielle Bartes, Alissa Geipel, Lily Heun, Diane McLeod, Kate Rosenbalm and Taylor Tomaszewski – and Illinois native Kathleen Rowland are set to join the Vikings this fall.

“The 2010 class has numbers, talent and experience,” Schoultz said. “The members of this class help us the most with the first two contacts. I am extremely excited about this class and the future of Lawrence volleyball.”

Brielle Bartes, Mukwonago High School, 5-9, Rightside Hitter/Outside Hitter

Bartes was a two-year varsity player and two-year letter winner for Mukwonago High School. She helped guide her high school team to a WIAA regional championship in 2009. She has played club volleyball for Muskego Stars Volleyball Club. Bartes also competed in varsity softball for three years and for the Mukwonago power lifting team. She took seventh place in the state power lifting competition as a senior. Bartes is a stellar student and has named to National Honor Society. She won the Scholar Athlete Award and received High Honors. Bartes also received Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association All-Academic honors. The daughter of Daniel and Happy Bartes, she plans to major in chemistry (pre-medicine) and minor in international affairs.

Alissa Geipel, Pewaukee High School, 5-7, Outside Hitter

Geipel was a two-year varsity player and two-year letter winner for Pewaukee High School. Geipel, who played club volleyball for Midwest Penguins Volleyball Club, also competed in varsity softball for four years and will play softball for the Vikings. Academically, Geipel has been named a Woodland Conference Scholar Athlete and has received High Honors. The daughter of Jerry and Sue Geipel, she plans to major in biology.

Lily Heun, University School of Milwaukee, 5-8, Rightside Hitter

Heun was a four-year varsity player and four-year letter winner for University School of Milwaukee. She earned first-team All-Midwest Classic Conference honors once and was a two-time second-team selection. Heun also competed in varsity track and field for three years. Heun is a Cum Laude Society Member, was nominated as a WIAA Scholar Athlete and received High Honors. The daughter of Robert and Jayne Heun, she plans to major in biology.

Diane McLeod, Waukesha Catholic Memorial High School, 5-10, Setter/Rightside Hitter

McLeod was a three-year varsity player and three-year letter winner for Catholic Memorial High School. McLeod earned honorable mention on the all-state team, while also picking up first-team all-conference honors. She also was selected for the WIAA All-State Tournament Team. McLeod helped lead her team to a conference and WIAA state championship in 2009. McLeod, who has played club volleyball for Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club, has been named to the National Honor Society and has received High Honors. She also received Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association All-Academic honors. The daughter of Daniel and Dawn, she plans to major in biology (pre-medicine) and Spanish.

Kate Rosenbalm, Waterford High School, 5-5, Defensive Specialist/Rightside Hitter

Rosenbalm was a two-year varsity player and two-year letter winner for Waterford High School. She has played club volleyball for Muskego Stars Volleyball Club. Academically, Rosenbalm has been named to the National Honor Society and has received High Honors. The daughter of Brian and Patricia Rosenbalm, she plans to major in biochemistry and Spanish.

Kathleen Rowland, Champaign (Ill.) High School, 5-6, Defensive Specialist/Libero

Rowland was a three-year varsity player and three-year letter winner for Champaign High School. Rowland, who has earned honorable mention all-conference and all-area accolades, played club volleyball for Illini Elite Volleyball Club. Rowland’s club teams have placed third at AAUs and USAV Junior Olympics. Rowland also competed in varsity tennis for one year and qualified for the Illinois High School Association State Tournament in doubles. Rowland has been named to the National Honor Society and has received High Honors. The daughter of Kendrith Rowland and Nancy Fay, she plans to major in biology.

Taylor Tomaszewski, Weyauwega-Fremont High School, 5-6, Rightside/Outside Hitter

Tomaszewski was a three-year varsity player and three-year letter winner for Weyauwega-Fremont High School. Tomaszewski has been named honorable mention all-conference and has played club volleyball for FC Elite Volleyball Club. Tomaszewski, who also competed in varsity track and field for four years, was the salutatorian of her class. She also was selected for the National Honor Society and received High Honors. Tomaszewski also received Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association All-Academic honors. The daughter of Rich and Rena Tomaszewski, she plans to major in engineering.

Lawrence opens its season Sept. 1 when its travels to compete against UW-Whitewater and Edgewood College in Madison.

Lawrence to host NCAA Division III Baseball Championship through 2013

Lawrence University will host the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship through 2013.

Lawrence, which was already tabbed to host the tournament in 2011, won a two-year bid to keep the event at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Lawrence, which co-hosts the event with the Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau, served as the lone host institution for the first time in 2010.

The NCAA Division III Baseball Championship is now assured of a run of at least 14 years in the Fox Cities. The longest previous tenure for any host site was Marietta, Ohio, which hosted the first 12 championships from 1976-87. The championship also has been played in Bristol, Conn., Battle Creek, Mich., and Salem, Va.

The eight-team, double-elimination tournament has been played at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium since 2000. Fox Cities Stadium is the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the Midwest League Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 2010 tournament, which saw Illinois Wesleyan University defeat the State University of New York-Cortland for the championship, had an attendance of 27,176. That is the second-highest attendance in tournament history, trailing only the record of 29,543 at Fox Cities Stadium in 2003.

The tournament, which is always contested over five days surrounding Memorial Day weekend, came to the Fox Cities in 2000 and was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for the first three years. Lawrence and UW-Oshkosh served as the co-hosts from 2003-09 before Lawrence became the lone host institution in 2010.

Lawrence tennis star Dunn named first-team Academic All-America

Lawrence University men’s tennis star Ryan Dunn has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.

Lawrence University men's tennis standout Ryan Dunn has been named a first-team Academic All-American.

Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac), a senior, was chosen for the at-large first-team team in a vote by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Dunn is a biology major and has a 3.86 grade point average.

Dunn is the first Lawrence athlete to be named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American since Andrew Wong was chosen for the baseball squad in 2006.

Dunn recently completed an impressive playing career for the Vikings. The No. 1 singles player for the Vikings, he compiled a career record of 57-12 and holds the Lawrence record for career wins.

A former No. 1 Midwest Conference singles champion, Dunn finished second at this year’s league championships and compiled a 20-3 record. He teamed with his brother, Jason Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac), for a 20-3 record at No. 1 doubles.

A Phi Beta Kappa, Dunn is a member of the Dean’s List and has been elected to Mortar Board, Lawrence’s senior honor society. Dunn also won the Iden Charles Champion Cup, given each year to a Lawrence athlete for excellence in athletics and academics.

Dunn also has earned the maximum of three Academic All-Midwest Conference selections.

Dunn also has given his time to the community. He has worked on Habitat for Humanity homes and spent the summer of 2008 as a hospital volunteer in Peru. Dunn also volunteers as a tutor at Appleton’s Richmond Elementary School.

Led by Dunn, Lawrence posted a 16-9 record and won the Midwest Conference North Division with a 4-0 record. Lawrence finished third at the Midwest Conference Championships.

Lawrence spring season student-athletes earn academic all-conference honors

Twenty-one Lawrence University spring season student-athletes have been chosen for the Academic All-Midwest Conference team.

To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be at least a sophomore.

Rashid chosen for all-region baseball team

selected for the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Central Region team.

Rashid (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), a junior center fielder, was a third-team selection. Rashid also was chosen for the Gold Glove team.

Rashid, who was a first-team All-Midwest Conference selection, hit a team-high .366 with 10 doubles, two triples and 23 runs batted in.

Rashid was one of the nation’s leaders in stolen bases per game. He swiped 32 bases in 36 games, an average of .889 per game. Rashid also led the Vikings with 33 runs scored.

Rashid, in his first season playing center field, recorded a .970 fielding percentage. He committed only three errors all season.

This was Rashid’s first all-region selection.

Ten student-athletes receive awards at Honors Celebration

Ten Lawrence University student-athletes were recognized for their achievements at the 2010 Honors Celebration.

The Ruth Bateman Award is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability, and leadership by a woman athlete. Senior Laura Aerts (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) was given the award for her contributions during four years of basketball and two years of volleyball. A math and education major, Aerts is an Academic All-Midwest Conference selection. A team captain in both basketball and volleyball, Aerts led the basketball team in scoring, assists and steals. A setter in volleyball, she led the team in assists and aces.

The Iden Charles Champion Cup is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability, college spirit, and loyalty. Senior Ryan Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) was recognized for his strong academic performance and outstanding contributions to the men’s tennis team. The Oustanding Freshman Athletic Award for Men is given to the freshman male who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Sam Stevens (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) was honored for his performance in cross country and indoor and outdoor track. Stevens earned All-Midwest Conference honors in cross country and won the mile at the Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Women is given to the freshman woman who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Cathy Kaye (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Sevastopol) was honored for her work with both the basketball and softball teams. Kaye hit .398 with 11 doubles, two triples, six homers and 17 runs batted in and was named to the All-Midwest Conference team. Kaye averaged 8.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game for the basketball squad.

The Ralph V. Landis Award was established by the Lettermen of Lawrence in honor of Dr. Landis, physician to Lawrence students from 1926-78, and is awarded for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics by a senior male athlete. Senior Matt Frelich (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) earned the award for his accomplishments in football, baseball and indoor and outdoor track. A two-time All-Midwest Conference selection in football, Frelich holds the career records for tackles for loss and blocked kicks. Frelich also was chosen as a Midwest Conference Player of the Week twice and was twice named to the D3football.com Team of the Week. Frelich also is part of the distance medley relay team that broke the school record in 2010.

The Letterwinner Award is presented by the L Club to those outstanding seniors who have earned eight or more letters. The winners are:

The Charles E. Pond Award for Men is given for all-around athletic ability by a senior man in two or more sports and for sportsmanship, school spirit and scholarship. Andy Frelich (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) was honored for his dedication to academics and contributions to baseball and football. Frelich was a four-year starter at cornerback and finished with 131 tackles, nine tackles for loss, five interceptions and 11 pass breakups. A biology major, Frelich was both a pitcher and outfielder for the Vikings. He hit .279 for his career and picked up five wins on the mound.

The Charles E. Pond Award for Women is given for all-around athletic ability by a senior woman in two or more sports and for sportsmanship, school spirit, and scholarship. Madeline Steininger (New Berlin, Wis./Milwaukee Pius XI) was honored for her dedication to academics and contributions to indoor and outdoor track. A biology major, Steininger is an All-American in the high jump and holds the Lawrence record both indoors and outdoors. A three-time conference champion, she was named the Outstanding Field Performers at the Midwest Conference Championships in 2008.

The Marion Read Award is given for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics. Senior Alex Goodson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) was honored for her outstanding contributions in softball and as an athletic trainer for football, cross country, women’s basketball and wrestling. A first baseman, Goodson is one of the most prolific hitters in Lawrence history. A four-time All-Midwest Conference and three-time All-Great Lakes Region selection, Goodson finished her career third in batting with a .408 average. She ranks first in Lawrence history with a .735 slugging percentage, first with 41 doubles, first with 21 homers and first with 122 runs batted in.

Dunn earns first-team Academic All-District honors

Goodson, Murray earn NFCA all-region honors

Lawrence University softball stars Alex Goodson and Shannon Murray have been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region team.

Goodson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) was a second-team selection and Murray (Lawrenceville, Ga./Dacula) was chosen for the third team.

Goodson, a senior first baseman, was chosen for the third time. A four-time All-Midwest Conference selection, Goodson hit .456 on the season with 11 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 30 runs batted in. Goodson also compiled an .856 slugging percentage.

One of the most prolific hitters in Lawrence history, Goodson finished her career third in batting with a .408 average. She ranks first in Lawrence history with a .735 slugging percentage, first with 41 doubles, first with 21 homers and first with 122 RBIs.

Murray, a freshman infielder, made a big impact for the Vikings at the plate and on the mound.

Murray hit .347 with seven doubles, one triple, one homer and 16 RBIs. She also posted a 10-6 record and threw only the second no-hitter in school history. Murray blanked Alverno College 10-0 on April 1 to toss the first no-hitter for the Vikings since 2004.

Murray tossed three shutouts and struck out 60 while walking 22 in 93 innings.

Lawrence finished with a 16-16 record on the season.

Rashid named to all-conference baseball team

Lawrence University baseball standout Robert Rashid has been named to the All-Midwest Conference North Division team in a vote by league coaches.

Rashid (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), a junior center fielder, was named to the team for the first time. Rashid hit .371 in 16 conference games with three doubles, one triple, one homer and 11 runs batted.

Rashid led the league with 13 stolen bases and scored a team-high 16 runs.

On the season, Rashid hit .366 in 36 games. He piled up 10 doubles, two triples, a homer and 23 RBIs. Rashid also broke the school season record with 32 stolen bases and ranks in the top 10 nationally in both stolen bases and stolen bases per game.
