Israel’s goal lifts Vikings to 2-1 victory over St. Norbert

The Lawrence University men’s soccer team got a goal from Darry Israel early in the second half and rode a sparkling defensive effort to a 2-1 Midwest Conference victory over St. Norbert College on Wednesday at Whiting Field West.

This marks the third consecutive time Lawrence (5-5-1, 2-2-1 MWC) has beaten St. Norbert (4-5-2, 1-2-1), and that has never happened in the series that dates back to 1974. The Vikings have as long as a five-game unbeaten streak (1981-84) against St. Norbert, but Lawrence had never more than two in a row against the Green Knights.

St. Norbert got on the board first with Tom Daly’s goal in the 14th minute, but Lawrence got the equalizer in the first half. Cameron Pieper’s corner kick was settled by Dan O’Mahoney, who punched the ball past St. Norbert goalkeeper Noah Davis to tie the match at 1-1 at 32:08.

Lawrence took the lead when Israel beat Davis off passes from Simon Newsom and Karl Mayer at the 47:44 mark.

The Vikings’ defense did the rest, allowing St. Norbert only two shots in the second half. Lawrence had a 13-6 edge in shots for the match.

Lawrence goalkeeper Kevin Aslett made two saves to pick up the win.
