Doares’ shutout leads Vikings to doubleheader split with Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Freshman pitcher Drew Doares tossed his second shutout of the season to lead the Lawrence University baseball team to a Midwest Conference doubleheader split with Carroll University on Saturday at Frame Park.

Lawrence (14-19, 5-9 MWC) won the opener 7-0, and Carroll (13-19, 3-11) pulled away late to take the nightcap 14-8.

Doares improved to 4-5 on the season and earned his second shutout in impressive fashion. He allowed only five hits, struck out six and walked one. Doares allowed only two runners as far as second base and none made it to third.

Jake Gordon went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Vikings, and Sam Kossow went 3-for-5. Gabe Henriques had a pair of hits for Lawrence, and Phil Wisniewski homered for the Vikings.

Lawrence led 2-0 and started to break the game open with three runs in the sixth. An error and a Kossow double put a pair of runners aboard, and Gordon followed with a two-run double. Gordon later scored on a wild pitch to give Lawrence a 5-0 lead.

The Vikings then completed the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh on back-to-back RBI singles from Kossow and Gordon.

Matt Buhrow went the distance for Carroll, allowed 11 hits, and took the loss.

In the nightcap, Carroll scored six times in the eighth to break an 8-8 tie. The Pioneers scored six times in the eighth on five hits, and the big blow was Drew Volkmann’s three-run double. Volkmann went 4-for-6 and drove in seven runs.

Dan Taylor took the loss in relief for the Vikings, and Marcus Radue worked the final 2 2/3 innings to get the win.

Kossow, Alex Brewer and Eric Bohling all had two hits for the Vikings, and Wisniewski drove in three runs. Wisniewski hit a three-run homer as part of a four-run sixth inning that tied the game at 8-8.

Olsson leads Vikings to seventh at MWC Championships

ROCKFORD, Ill. — Anton Olsson finished 18th to lead the Lawrence University golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Midwest Conference Championships on Saturday.

Lawrence finished with a 54-hole total of 1,041 on the par-72 layout at Aldeen Golf Club. Carroll University won the title with a score of 925.

Olsson carded his second consecutive 81 on Saturday to finish at 244. Other finishers for the Vikings were Tyler Clark (42nd, 271), William Thoren (T43, 273), Tyler Mazur (T45, 276), Derek Brickan (47th, 277) and Zach Joseph (48th, 279).

Bobby Stuebi of Knox College won the individual title with a score of six-over par score of 222.

Kerkman smashes record in hammer at Viking Invitational

It had been nine years almost to the day since Lawrence University hosted a track meet at Whiting Field, and Nick Kerkman marked a rebirth for Lawrence track by smashing a school record Saturday at the Viking Invitational.

Kerkman won the hammer throw with a toss of 46.83 meters to easily top his own school record. Kerkman’s throw, which converts to 153 feet, 7 inches, broke the old mark of 145-1.

The field events was where the Vikings posted a number of other first-place finishes. Nick Craker won the shot put with a throw of 45-3 and took second in the discus. On the women’s side, Rose Tepper won the high jump at 4-11.75 and Brielle Bartes took the shot put with a toss of 33-0.25.

Anna Bolgrien ran to victory in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.63 and she took second in the 100 hurdles in 16.07 seconds. Mike Mangian grabbed first in the 800 meters in 2:00.96.

Vikings seventh after second day of MWC Championships

ROCKFORD, Ill. — Anton Olsson carded an 81 in the second round on Friday to lead the Lawrence University golf team on the second day of the Midwest Conference Championships.

Olsson was nine-over par on the par-72 layout at Aldeen Golf Club and is in 19th place.

Lawrence is in seventh place with a team score of 695 after carding a 349 on Friday. St. Norbert College posted a team score of 304 on Friday and leads with a total of 619.

Registration open for Viking Bench Golf Outing

Registration is now open for the Lawrence University Viking Bench Golf Outing.

The outing is set for Monday, June 4, at Royal St. Patrick’s Golf Links in Wrightstown, Wis.

Registration is available online at http://www.lawrence.edu/athletics/golf/golfouting.shtml, or you can download a registration form at the same site.

The event begins with registration at 9 a.m., and it’s a 10 a.m. shotgun start. A buffet dinner is served at 4 p.m. Raffle opportunities and a silent auction are also taking place.

The cost is $100 per golfer and sponsorships opportunities ranging from $300 to $1,500 are available. A sponsorship form is available at http://www.lawrence.edu/athletics/golf/golfouting.shtml.

Funds raised through the Viking Bench Golf Outing go to support Lawrence’s 22 intercollegiate athletic teams.

 

Tatro gets career win No. 300 as Vikings end season on winning note

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Lawrence University softball coach Kim Tatro picked up career win No. 300 on Sunday as the Vikings split a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Carroll University.

Carroll took the opener 2-1, and the Vikings won the nightcap 8-5.

The victory in the second game gave Tatro her 300th win and improved her record to 300-281-1 over 19 seasons at Lawrence. Tatro has more victories (391 combined with softball and volleyball) than any coach in Lawrence history.

Lawrence (9-22, 2-6 MWC) trailed 2-0 in the nightcap before scoring three runs in the top of the third. Brielle Bartes led off the inning with her first homer of the season, and the Vikings then loaded the bases. Lawrence added two more runs on a ground out and Cory Paquette’s single to go up 3-2.

The Vikings added two more runs in the fourth without a hit as the Pioneers committed and error and threw a pair of wild pitches. Carroll (19-12, 5-3) cut the lead to 5-3 with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Lawrence rallied again in the top of the fifth.

Coley LaChance and Shannon Murray started the inning with singles and moved to second and third on an error. Cathy Kaye lifted a sacrifice fly to score LaChance, and Kara Vance added a run-scoring single to give the Vikings a 7-3.

Lawrence added a run in the sixth on Alex Chiodo’s RBI single, but Carroll cut the lead to 8-5 with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Murray then a perfect seventh to seal the win.

Emily Perish, Chiodo, Paquette and Vance all had two hits to pace the Vikings in the nightcap. Murray went the distance to pick up the win.

In the opener, Carroll scored twice in the second, and all Lawrence could muster was a single run in the fifth.

Lawrence loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Carroll pitcher Taylor Steinhilber got Alissa Geipel to ground out to end the game. Steinhilber went the distance to pick up the win, and Murray took the loss.

Green Knights down Vikings in pair of slugfests

The St. Norbert College baseball team downed Lawrence University in a pair of slugfests at Whiting Field on Sunday.

The Green Knights won the opener 14-10, and St. Norbert (19-10, 10-2 MWC) took the nightcap of the Midwest Conference doubleheader 10-8.

Travis Mason and Matt Hannon had three hits apiece in the opener for St. Norbert, and Mason drove in six runs. Nathan Schadrie pitched seven innings of relief to get the win for St. Norbert.

Davis Ogilvie and Davide Harris had three hits apiece for Lawrence. Ogilvie, also the starting pitcher, had his first career hit, his first career double and drove in his first two runs. Eric Bohling, Phil Wisniewski, Sam Kossow and Jake Gordon all had two hits for the Vikings.

Ogilvie allowed six hits over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked five. Phil Clark allowed five runs without recording an out and took the loss.

Lawrence (13-18, 4-8) had built an 8-6 lead in the opener before St. Norbert struck for six runs in the eighth inning. The big blows in the inning were Mason’s two-run homer and Garrick Fisher’s solo shot.

Lawrence cut the lead to 12-9 with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but St. Norbert got two more runs in the top of the ninth to push the lead to 14-9. Harris smacked a run-scoring double in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 14-10 but the Vikings could get no closer.

Jordan Powers and Hannon both had three hits in the nightcap for St. Norbert, and Jose Godinez and Alex Larsen both homered for the Green Knights.

Bohling went 3-for-5 and homered for Lawrence, and Kossow, Gordon and Tanner DeBettencourt all had two hits for the Vikings.

Lawrence built a 6-2 lead by scoring three times in the second and three more times in the third. The Vikings held that edge until St. Norbert exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning. Godinez belted a three-run homer for the Green Knights and Mason had a key two-run single in the inning.

Lawrence trimmed the lead to 9-7 in the bottom half of the inning when Bohling led off with a homer. The Vikings then trimmed the lead to 9-8 in the bottom of the eighth when Ogilvie pinch-hit and drew a bases-loaded walk from Kevin Nutley. Nutley then struck out Harris and Gabe Henriques to preserve the one-run lead.

St. Norbert added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, but Lawrence got a single from Bohling and Kossow walked to put the tying runs aboard in the bottom half of the inning. Nutley then got Gordon to ground out to end the game and pick up his second save of the season.

Nick Dagneau pitched three innings of relief to get the win. Atley Gay started for Lawrence and took the loss.

St. Norbert takes two from Vikings

DE PERE, Wis. — The St. Norbert College baseball team picked up a Midwest Conference doubleheader sweep against Lawrence University on Saturday at Mel Nicks Field.

St. Norbert (17-10, 8-2 MWC) won the opener 24-2 and took the nightcap 6-1.

In the opener, St. Norbert pounded out 25 hits and scored in each of the first five innings. Chad Ljunggren went 4-for-5, scored three runs and drove in three for St. Norbert. Garrick Fisher and Troy Rottier had three hits apiece, and Rottier drove in four runs.

Kevin Nutley pitched five innings to pick up the win. Drew Doares lasted only 1 1/3 innings and took the loss.

Phil Wisniewski went 2-for-2 to lead Lawrence (13-16, 4-6).

In the nightcap, St. Norbert used timely hitting to build a 6-0 lead. Travis Mason, Jose Godinez and Ljunggren all had two hits for the Green Knights.

Josh Honzik went eight-plus innings to get the win. He allowed six hits, struck out 10 and walked two. Kelton Jenkins went 5 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Wisniewski again collected two hits for the Vikings.

Muhs, Tepper take firsts at UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. — Emily Muhs and Rose Tepper both took first-place finishes at the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative on Saturday.

Muhs ran to first place in the 10,000 meters with a time of 40:23.15, and Tepper tied for first in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 1 inch.

Lawrence’s 400-meter relay team of Tepper, Sam Luebke, Kassidy Rinehart and Anna Bolgrien raced to a second-place finish in 53.10 seconds. Bolgrien also raced to third in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.59.

On the men’s side, Sam Estrem and Tom Coben finished second and third, respectively, in the 10,000. Estrem was second in 34:27.09 and Coben was third in 35:15.73. Curren Carlile raced to a third-place finish in the 5,000 in 15:46.68.
