Vikings roll to shutout win over Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. —  The Lawrence University women’s tennis team pounded Monmouth College 9-0 on Saturday in a nonconference match.

Lawrence (5-4) did not drop a set and lost a total of only 10 games in the nine matches.

The Vikings started the day by sweeping the three doubles matches, highlighted by the 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles by Elena Watson and Allison Juda.

The Vikings recorded a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles, with Melissa Heeren (No. 4) and Brenna Decker (No. 6) doing the honors.

Carleton shuts out Vikings

DECORAH, Iowa — The Carleton College volleyball team used a balanced attack to down Lawrence University 3-0 in a nonconference match on Saturday at the Associated College of the Midwest Invitational at Luther College.

The Knights won 25-22, 25-11, 25-18.

Carleton had five players with at least four kills and limited Lawrence to just a .157 hitting percentage. Terese Swords paced the Vikings with eight kills, and Betsy Sorensen added six. Diane McLeod picked up a match-high 24 assists, and Kathleen Rowland posted 16 digs.

Macalester tops Lawrence

DECORAH, Iowa — The Macalester College volleyball team won three close sets to post a 3-0 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Invitational at Luther College.

The Scots won 25-22, 25-19, 25-23.

Betsy Sorensen and Kayla Storm paced Lawrence with seven kills apiece, and Megan Conley added four. Diane McLeod posted 28 assists and 10 digs, and Kathleen Rowland also had 10 digs for the Vikings.

Lake Forest hangs on to down Lawrence 14-13

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lake Forest College football team blocked two fields in the final three minutes, including one on the last play of the game, to hang on for a 14-13 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University on Saturday night in the Banta Bowl.

The Foresters (2-0, 1-0 MWC) also blocked an extra point that proved to be the winning margin.

Lawrence trailed by a point when it took over at its own 36-yard line with 9:51 left. The Vikings took 13 plays to move all the way to the Lake Forest two-yard line before being stopped. Freshman Patrick O’Mahoney lined up for a 19-yard field goal, and the kick was blocked. The ball went out of the end zone and Lake Forest took over at its own 20 with 2:41 left.

Lawrence (0-2, 0-2) was out of timeouts, but the Foresters failed to pick up a first down. Lake Forest did the Vikings a favor by throwing an incomplete pass on third down to stop the clock. Lake Forest punted, and Lawrence got the ball back at its own 23 with 47 seconds left.

Lawrence quarterback Luke Barthelmess hit Sam Wagner with a 32-yard completion on the first play to move the ball to the Lake Forest 45. Barthelmess then ripped off runs of 11 and 24 yards to move to to the Lake Forest 10-yard line.

After a pair of incompletions, the Vikings were called for offensive pass interference with six seconds left. O’Mahoney lined up for a 42-yard field goal, but the kick was blocked again as time expired.

Barthelmess ran 21 times for 124 yards, and he completed 24 of 36 passes for 284 yards and a touchdown. Taylor Mandich grabbed seven passes for 95 yards for the Vikings.

The Lawrence offense piled up 450 yards of offense, including 166 on the ground. The Lawrence defense limited Lake Forest to just 239 yards, and the Foresters were just 3-for-11 on third down.

Alec Howe paced the Lake Forest offense by running 20 times for 121 yards. Quarterback Mike Lewis was 8-for-17 for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Lake Forest took a 7-0 lead when it moved 76 yards in six plays with Lewis connecting with Mike Rantis on a 14-yard touchdown pass. Lawrence answered on its next possession as the Vikings went 77 yards in 11 plays for the score. Barthelmess hit Mandich with a seven-yard scoring pass with 1:34 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

Lawrence then scored on its next possession to take a 13-7 lead. The Vikings went 49 yards in nine plays, with Isaac Barthlemess scoring his first collegiate touchdown on a three-yard run. Jake Rotkvich blocked the extra point, and the Vikings led by six.

Lake Forest then took the lead for good late in the second quarter. The Foresters went 50 yards in seven plays as Charlie Quinn ripped off a 20-yard touchdown run. Lake Forest converted on the extra point and led 14-13 with 4:48 left in the first half.

Pointers down Lawrence in straight sets

OSHKOSH, Wis. — The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team downed Lawrence University 3-0 at the UW-Oshkosh Quadrangular on Wednesday at Kolf Sports Center.

Stevens Point won 25-16, 25-15, 25-18.

Terese Swords led Lawrence with 12 kills and Betsy Sorensen added five. Diane McLeod paced Lawrence with 21 assists, and Kayla Storm had a team-high 10 digs.

UW-Oshkosh tops Vikings

OSHKOSH, Wis. — The UW-Oshkosh volleyball team downed Lawrence University 3-1 on Wednesday as part of the UW-Oshkosh Quadrangular at Kolf Sports Center.

Oshkosh won 25-14, 22-25, 25-19, 25-10.

Betsy Sorensen had five kills and Megan Conley added four for the Vikings. Diane McLeod piled up 27 assists and added 10 digs for Lawrence. Kathleen Rowland had a team-best 20 digs.

Vikings continue mastery of Ripon

RIPON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team rolled to an 8-1 Midwest Conference North Division over Ripon College on Wednesday at the Larson Courts.

Lawrence (4-4, 1-0 MWC) dropped only two games en route to sweeping the three doubles matches and then took five of the six singles matches.

Lawrence was especially impressive in the final four singles matches. Polly Dalton (No. 3), Melissa Heeren (No. 4) and Brenna Decker (No. 6) all posted 6-0, 6-0 victories, and Allison Juda was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 5. Hannah Geoffrey also won at No. 2 singles for the Vikings.

Lawrence pushed its win streak against Ripon (1-6, 0-2) to 10 consecutive matches.

Elmhurst shuts out Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The Elmhurst College women’s soccer team scored early and pulled away with a pair of late goals for a 3-0 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Wednesday at Whiting Field West.

The Bluejays (3-2-0) scored in the sixth minute and then added goals in the 72nd minute and 85th minute to seal the win. Shelby Sonte, Kristie Waugh and Jordin Clark all scored for Elmhurst, and Jackie Belmonte added two assists.

Elmhurst piled up a 31-4 edge in shots, and Emily Gordon had to make just one save to record the shutout. Dani Glass stopped 12 shots for the Vikings (1-2-0).

Lakeland scores late to tip Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lakeland College men’s soccer team scored in the 85th minute and held on for a 3-2 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Wednesday at Whiting Field West.

Renan Asato scored off a pass from Farouk Dadzie at the 84:52 mark to break a 2-2 tie. Dadzie scored both of the other goals for the Muskies (3-1-1).

Lawrence (1-3-1) took a 1-0 lead on Erik Soderlund’s goal just 1:49 into the match as Michael Deremo picked up the assist. After Dadzie tied it at 34:44, Deremo scored off a pass from Chris Kiehl at 50:03 to give Lawrence a 2-1 edge. Dadzie tied it again at 58:42.

Joe Krivit made eight saves for Lawrence, which enjoyed a 22-17 edge in shots. Austin Ganzke stopped 11 shots for the Muskies.

Marian slips past Lawrence in overtime

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The Marian University men’s soccer team scored on a penalty kick in overtime to pull out a 2-1 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Sunday night.

David Reinke scored on the penalty kick at 95:05 to end the match. Reinke had scored a goal at 51:22 to tie the match at 1-1.

Lawrence got on the board first when Michael Deremo scored off a pass from Erik Soderlund at 35:28 to give the Vikings a 1-0 edge.
