Cornell shuts out Vikings

EAST PEORIA, Ill. — Jackie Sernek tossed a four-hit shutout to lead Cornell College to a 3-0 victory over Lawrence University on Sunday at the Midwest Conference Classic.

Sernek struck out six and walked two over seven innings for the Rams (17-8, 5-3 MWC). Sernek’s outing overshadowed a fine effort from Liz Barthels, who went the distance, allowed six hits and only one earned run for the Vikings (12-8, 3-3).

Brianna Carney went 2-for-2 to pace Cornell, who scored unearned runs in the third and fourth and picked up another run in the sixth inning.

Vikings rally late to pull past Illinois College

EAST PEORIA, Ill. — The Lawrence University softball team rallied for five runs in its final two at-bats to rally for a 6-2 victory over Illinois College on Sunday at the Midwest Conference Classic.

The Vikings trailed 2-1 headed to the bottom of the fifth, but Lawrence (12-7, 3-2 MWC) scored twice in that frame and then added three more runs in the sixth to pull away.

Amanda Jaskolski went 4-for-4 with two doubles and drove in four runs to pace the Lawrence attack. Samantha Belletini, Tierney Duffy, Anna Wawiorka and Mary Diduch all had two hits for the Vikings, and Belletini drove in a pair of runs.

Kara Vance allowed 10 hits but only two runs as she went the distance to earn the win. Alese Speckhart went the distance for the Lady Blues (9-15, 4-6) and allowed 15 hits in six innings.

Duffy got the rally in the fifth started with a single and Wawiorka followed with a bunt single. Jaskolski followed with a double to score Duffy and tie the game at 2-2. Wawiorka then scored on Belletini’s sacrifice fly and Lawrence led 3-2.

The Vikings took command in the sixth with another rally. Diduch got things started with a single, and Duffy picked up a single one out later. After another out, Jaskolski belted a two-run double to give Lawrence a 5-2 edge. Belletini followed with another double to score Jaskolski and Lawrence led 6-2.

Vance then worked around a one-out single in the seventh to nail down the victory.

St. Norbert top Vikings 6-3

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The St. Norbert College men’s tennis team swept the doubles competition and that proved to be the difference in a 6-3 Midwest Conference North Division win over Lawrence University on Sunday.

Lawrence (4-12, 1-3 MWC North) split the singles matches with the Green Knights (4-12, 2-2). David Jumes posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2, and Adam Busch won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5. Ethan Perushek also won 7-5, 5-7, 1-0, taking the supertiebreaker 10-6 to win the match at No. 6.

Schuster paces Vikings at Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Nigel Schuster tied for 16th place on Saturday to lead the Lawrence University golf team at the Wisconsin Lutheran College Invitational.

Schuster carded a 6-over par 78 on the par-72 layout at Moringstar Golfers Club. Led by Schuster, the Vikings carded a team score of 335 to take ninth place.

Edgewood College and Wisconsin Lutheran tied for the title at 303.

Vikings take three titles at Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Lawrence University track and field team won three individual titles on Saturday at the Wisconsin Lutheran College Invitational.

The Lawrence women claimed a pair of titles on their way to finishing fourth among the 10 teams with 86 points.

Anna Bolgrien grabbed first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.78. Katherine Dannecker took the top spot in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 12:04.19.

Elin Karlsson led Lawrence finishers in second through fourth place in the 5,000. Karlsson was second in 19:27.34 and was followed by Kristen Bischel in third and Clare Bruning in fourth.

Also taking third for the Vikings were Kate Kilgus (800), Genna Matt (hammer throw) and the 1,600 relay team.

On the men’s side, Cam Davies completed a Lawrence sweep of the steeplechase races by winning in 9:45.05.

Other top finishers for the Lawrence men were Mike Mangian (third, 800), Spencer Swick (third, shot put; fourth, hammer throw), Andy Paider (third, hammer throw) and James Holden (third, javelin).

Monmouth powers to win over Lawrence

EAST PEORIA, Ill. — The Monmouth College softball team busted the game open in the third inning and rolled to an 11-1, five-inning victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Midwest Conference Classic.

Lawrence (11-7, 2-2 MWC) led 1-0 when the Scots (12-12, 4-3) scored five times in the top of the third. Monmouth added four more runs in the fourth and put the game away with two more runs in the fifth.

Emily Watkins went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs for the Scots, and Sommer Foster was 3-for-3 and scored three runs.

Amanda Jaskolski went 2-for-2 with a double and scored the lone run for the Vikings.

Alyssa Edler pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Liz Barthels went 2.2 innings and took the loss.

Foresters stop Vikings 4-2

EAST PEORIA, Ill. — The Lake Forest College softball team scored in each of its final three at-bats to take a 4-2 victory over Lawrence University at the Midwest Conference Classic on Saturday.

Alex Hemmer was one of four Lake Forest players with two hits, and Hemmer drove in a pair of runs for the Foresters (18-4, 10-0 MWC). Jenny McTague went the distance, allowing six hits while striking out four, to pick up the win.

Savanna Marsicek went 2-for-3 and scored both runs for Lawrence (11-6, 2-1).

Lawrence led 1-0 in the top of the first when Marsicek singled and later scored on a double-steal attempt. The Foresters took the lead for good at 2-1 on Hemmer’s two-run single in the bottom of the fourth.

The Foresters tacked on another run in the fifth, but Lawrence countered with a run in the sixth when Marsicek singled and later scored on a passed ball. Lake Forest got that run right back in the bottom half of the inning to go up 4-2.

Lawrence brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but McTague got a ground out to work out of the jam.

Kara Vance went 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, and took the loss for Lawrence.

Carroll downs Vikings 6-3

OSHKOSH, Wis. — The Carroll University men’s tennis team improved to 3-0 in Midwest Conference North Division play with a 6-3 win over Lawrence University on Saturday at the YMCA Tennis Center.

The Pioneers (8-10 overall) won two of the three doubles matches and then took four singles matches.

Lawrence (4-11, 1-2 MWC) got its first point of the day when David Jumes and Adam Busch posted an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Jumes then picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles. Jeremy Andereck also posted a win for Lawrence with a 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory at No. 3 singles.

Big inning propels Vikings to blowout of Grinnell

EAST PEORIA, Ill. — The Lawrence University softball team scored seven times in the sixth inning to post an 8-0 conference victory over Grinnell College on Friday at the Midwest Conference Classic.

The Vikings (10-5, 1-0 MWC) led 1-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth but ended the game after the seven-run outburst. Jessica Demski fired a two-hitter to earn the shutout for Lawrence. She struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

Samantha Belletini and Alex Chiodo both went 2-for-3 to pace the Lawrence offense, and Belletini drove in three runs.

Two Grinnell errors helped get the rally started, and Chiodo drove in a run to put the Vikings up 2-0. Belletini then stroked a two-run double for a 4-0 lead. Another error allowed Belletini to score, and Anna Wawiorka picked up a run-scoring double to give Lawrence a 6-0 edge.

The Vikings closed out the win when another Grinnell error allowed Alissa Geipel and Wawiorka to score for an 8-0 lead.

Lawrence started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fourth on Bellitini’s RBI double.

Vikings double up Knox 24-12

EAST PEORIA, Ill. — The Lawrence University softball team pounded out 24 hits on Friday en route to a 24-12 league victory over Knox College at the Midwest Conference Classic.

Alex Chiodo became the third Lawrence player this week to tie the school record for hits in a game when she went 5-for-6. Chiodo also scored four runs and drove in five for the Vikings (11-5, 2-0 MWC). Both Savanna Marsicek and Samantha Belletini tied the record of five hits against Mount Mary University on Tuesday.

Anna Wawiorka and Amanda Jaskolski both went 3-for-5 against Knox (2-20, 0-4). Marsicek, Belletini, Mary Diduch, Cory Paquette and Marisa Thackston all had two hits for Lawrence, and Marsicek drove in four runs.

Knox jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning and led 9-2 after two. Lawrence then scored seven times in the third, with Chiodo and Taylor Dodson picking up two-run singles, to tie the game at 9-9.

The Vikings then scored three times in the fourth and put the game away with five runs in the sixth and seven more in the seventh. Marsicek blasted a three-run homer in the seventh.

Liz Barthels pitched six innings of relief to get the win for Lawrence. Karli Shields went five innings and took the loss.
