Marian picks up win over Vikings

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The Marian University baseball team jumped on Lawrence University early on Wednesday and didn’t let up in a 16-5 nonconference victory at Herr-Baker Field.

The Sabres (10-9) scored four times in the bottom of the first, added two more in the third and then scored four times in both the fourth and fifth innings to seal the win.

Tommy Dugandzic went 3-for-3 with a double and drove in five runs to pace Marian’s 16-hit attack. Jake Gordon went 3-for-5 and Aaron Benz was 2-for-4 and both drove in a run to pace Lawrence (3-12).

Brett Barger allowed three hits and three runs over five innings to pick up the win. Joe Krivit went 2.1 innings and allowed six runs to take the loss.

Vikings roll to 7-2 win over Ripon

RIPON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team continued its winning ways against Ripon College with a 7-2 Midwest Conference victory on Wednesday on the Larson Courts.

Lawrence (4-10, 1-1 MWC North) has now beaten Ripon (2-13, 0-3) seven consecutive times dating back to the 2008 season.

The Vikings led 2-1 after the doubles as the No. 2 team of David Jumes and Adam Busch and the No. 3 duo of Blake Roubos and Sam Wiener both picked up 8-2 wins.

Lawrence then swept the Nos. 2-6 singles and won each match in straight sets. Jumes (No. 2), Jeremy Andereck (No. 3), Mitch Kasprzyk (No. 4), Busch (No. 5) and Ethan Perushek (No. 6) were all winners for the Vikings.

Lawrence rolls to doubleheader sweep of Mount Mary

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University softball team pounded out 35 hits en route to a nonconference doubleheader sweep of Mount Mary University on Tuesday at Whiting Field.

Lawrence (9-5) won the opener 17-0 and took the nightcap 23-0. The 23 runs is the third-highest game total in Lawrence history.

Both Lawrence’s Savanna Marsicek and Samantha Belletini tied the school record of five hits in a game. Marsicek went 5-for-5 with four runs batted in in the opener, and Belletini was 5-for-5, scored four runs and drove in four in the nightcap. They tied the record of five hits in a game set by Alex Goodson vs. D’Youville College in 2009.

In the opener, Lawrence scored six times in the first, added three more runs in the second and scored seven times in the third against the Blue Angels (2-18). In addition to Marsicek’s five hits, Cory Paquette had two hits and drove in three with a three-run homer. Taylor Dodson also had a pair of hits for the Vikings.

Kara Vance went three innings to get the win and combined on a one-hitter with Jessica Demski in the five-inning contest.

In the nightcap, Alissa Geipel, Dodson, Katie Schumacher, Marisa Thackston and Rheya Upadhyaya all had two hits for the Vikings. Dodson and Schumacher also drove in four runs apiece.

The Vikings scored 14 times in the first inning and the rout was on. Lawrnece added four runs in the second, two more in the third and three more in the fourth.

Liz Barthels got the win, and she combined with Paquette on a two-hitter over five innings.

Vikings split doubleheader with Beloit

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University baseball team got a standout pitching performance to earn a split of a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Beloit College on Tuesday at Whiting Field.

Lawrence (3-11, 1-3 MWC) won the opener 4-1, and Beloit (11-7, 3-1) took the nightcap 16-3 and turned a triple play.

Atley Gay went the distance in the opener to lead the Vikings to the victory in the opener. He allowed six hits and no earned runs while striking out three and walking two.

Beloit led 1-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth, but Sam Kossow led off the bottom half of the inning with a single for the Vikings. Luke Zablocki then blasted his second homer of the season to put Lawrence up 2-1. Brandon Vamarasi followed with a double, and Dan Taylor belted his first homer of the season two batters later to put Lawrence up 4-1.

Zablocki finished 2-for-4 to pace the Lawrence offense.

Craig Vruwink went four inning and allowed all four runs to take the loss for the Bucs.

In the nightcap, Lawrence had built a 3-1 lead through five innings, when the Bucs tied it with a pair of runs in the sixth against Lawrence starter Phil Clark. The Bucs then got three more runs in the seventh on just two hits but got some help with a walk, hit batsman and an error to lead 6-3.

Beloit then blew the game open with 10 runs in the eighth to lead 16-3. Beloit had just five hits in the inning, but Lawrence pitchers issued five walks in the inning.

The Vikings started the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles when Joel Birch’s line drive was snared by second baseman Adrian Peil. He made a diving catch then flipped to second for one out, and the relay throw went back to first for a triple play.

Kossow and Zablocki both had two hits in the nightcap for Lawrence.

Jerrick Habecker went 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Clark pitched seven innings and took the loss.

Davies paces Vikings at Whitewater Invitational

WHITEWATER, Wis. — Cam Davies grabbed fourth place in the 1,500 meters on Sunday to lead the Lawrence University track teams at the Rex Foster Invitational at UW-Whitewater.

Davies raced to the fourth-place finish in 4:10.81. Kate Kilgus grabbed seventh in the women’s 1,500 in 5:11.09.

The top women’s finisher was the 1,600 relay team of Anna Bolgrien, Kilgus, Kristen Bischel and Elin Karlsson, which took sixth in 4:40.41.

Genna Matt broke the school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 135 feet, 3 inches (41.22 meters). She placed ninth in the event.

Foresters edge Lawrence 5-4

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lake Forest College men’s tennis team edged Lawrence University 5-4 in a nonconference match on Sunday at the Lawrence Courts.

The Foresters (11-10) hung on for the win after Lawrence (3-10) rallied to tighten things up.

Lake Forest won two of the three singles matches, with Lawrence winning 8-4 at No. 1 behind the play of Brian DeCorte and Jeremy Andereck.

Lawrence split the singles matches with the Foresters as DeCorte won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1. Andereck posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 and rookie David Jumes rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2.

Vikings drop pair to Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. — The Beloit College baseball team tossed a shutout in the opener and then got an unearned run late to pull out the nightcap in a Midwest Conference sweep of Lawrence University on Saturday at Strong Stadium.

Beloit  won the opener 5-0 and took the nightcap 4-3.

In the first game, Ryan Kaveney went the distance in tossing a four-hit shutout. He struck out 13 and did not walk a batter. The Vikings (2-10, 0-2 MWC) had only one runner reach as far as third base.

Davis Ogilvie allowed four hits in 4.2 innings and took the loss. He struck out seven and walked five. Seven Beloit players had one hit apiece and Ethan Blumenthal drove in two runs for the Bucs (10-6, 2-0).

In the second game, Beloit broke a 3-3 tie with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Gulve reached on an error and got to third with the help of a single and another error. He then scored on Alex Lawrence’s fielder’s choice ground ball to put the Bucs up 4-3.

Lawrence had a chance to tie it in the eighth after Luke Zablocki delivered a two-out double. Pinch-runner Brandon Klar moved to third after an error on pitcher Jim Leyhane, but Gabe Warshaw struck out to end the threat.

The Vikings had a threat against reliever Andrew Kane in the ninth after Max Markoff’s one-out single, but Brandon Vamarasi grounded into a game-ending double play.

Zablocki went 3-for-3 with three doubles and drove in a pair of runs in a three-run first inning for the Vikings. Alex Lawrence went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for Beloit.

Leyhane went eight innings, allowed nine hits, struck out seven and walked one to get the win. Drew Doares went seven innings, allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked three to take the loss.

The teams finish the four-game series on Sunday at Whiting Field.

Strong singles play leads Vikings past Wisconsin Lutheran

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team won four of the six singles matches to earn a 5-4 nonconference victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College on Friday night at Fox Cities Racquet Club.

The Vikings trailed 2-1 after the doubles matches, but the Vikings picked up wins at Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles.

David Jumes was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 2, and Jeremy Andereck picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Adam Busch won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5, and Ethan Perushek was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 6.

Vikings fall to Calvin

TAMPA, Fla. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 nonconference decision to Calvin College on Friday in the final match of the Vikings’ spring break trip.

Lawrence’s lone victory came at No. 2 singles where David Jumes posted an impressive 6-3, 6-0 victory over Tom Griffin. Brian DeCorte at No. 1 and Jeremy Andereck at No. 3 both stretched their opponents to a third-set supertiebreaker before falling.

Lawrence returns to action on April 4 against Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Vikings get some bang for their buck in win over Middlebury

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team collected only four hits on Friday against Middlebury College, but that was enough for the Vikings to score a 3-2 nonconference victory.

Lawrence (7-5) picked up single runs in the first, third and sixth innings and held off a Middlebury rally in the seventh to preserve the win.

Liz Barthels allowed one run and four hits over four innings to pick up the win for Lawrence. Kara Vance tossed 1.1 innings of relief to pick up the save.

The Vikings got on the board after Savanna Marsicek started the bottom of the first with a single. After a sacrifice bunt, Marsicek moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Anna Wawiorka’s squeeze bunt.

Lawrence made it 2-0 in the third and got some help from the Panthers (6-6). Tierney Duffy reached on an error, went to third on another error and scored on Wawiorka’s single.

Middlebury cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, but Lawrence got that run back in the sixth. Alissa Geipel singled to start the inning and scored on Amanda Jaskolski’s triple for a 3-1 lead.

Vance allowed a run in the seventh, and the Panthers had the tying run on base when she got a fly ball for the final out.
