Vikings roll to 12-4 rout of Thomas

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team scored multiple runs in four consecutive innings and rolled to a 12-4 nonconference win over Thomas (Maine) College on Friday.

The Vikings pounded out 11 hits and nine different players had a hit for Lawrence (6-5). Kara Vance went the distance for Lawrence to pick up the win. She allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked three.

Amanda Jaskolski went 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs batted in for Lawrence. Mary Diduch went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs.

Lawrence broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the third. Alissa Geipel and Anna Wawiorka both scored after an error on Wawiorka’s ground ball for a 2-0 lead. After Jaskolski singled, Alex Chiodo doubled to score Jaskolski for a 3-0 edge.

Thomas (2-5) got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Vikings added two more runs in the fourth. Tierney Duffy started the inning with a bunt single and then scored on an error. The Vikings then loaded the bases on another error and a hit batsman. Wawiorka then scored on a wild pitch for a 5-1 lead.

Lawrence added two more runs in the fifth for a 7-1 edge. Diduch tripled to score Cory Paquette and then scored on Savanna Marsicek’s sacrifice fly.

The Terriers got three runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the margin to 7-4, but Lawrence sealed the victory with five runs in the sixth. Jaskolski blasted a two-run homer in the inning, Katie Schumacher had a run-scoring double and Diduch added a two-run single.

Vikings drop pair to Lewis and Clark

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Lewis and Clark College baseball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Thursday by the scores of 8-1 and 14-7.

In the opener, Michael Kinkenon and Hayden Higger had two hits apiece to lead the Pioneers. Jake Gordon went 2-for-4 to pace the Vikings in the opener.

Lawrence (2-8) led 1-0 in the top of the fourth when Davis Ogilvie’s single scored Joel Birch with the game’s first run. The Pioneers struck for three in the bottom half of the inning and then sealed the win with five more runs in the fifth.

In the nightcap, Lewis and Clark used a big six-run fourth inning to take the lead and then pulled away late.

Gordon went 3-for-4, and Birch and Aaron Benz both had two hits for the Vikings. Benz and Brandon Vamarasi each drove in a pair of runs for Lawrence.

Bradley Lezak went 3-for-4 and scored four runs for the Pioneers (8-12-1), and Kinkenon drove in four runs.

Lawrence built a 4-1 lead through three innings, but the Pioneers collected six hits and six runs in the fourth to grab a 7-4 edge. Lawrence countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Lewis and Clark sealed the win with two runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh.

Buena Vista shuts out Lawrence

CLERMONT, Fla. — Jenna Falline tossed a four-hit shutout to lead the Buena Vista University softball team to a 6-0 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Thursday at the National Training Center.

Falline walked four and did not strike out a batter to record the victory.

Samantha Belletini had two hits, and Savanna Marsicek and Taylor Dodson also had hits for the Vikings (5-5).

The Beavers scored four times in the top of the first and added two more runs in the second to complete all the scoring in the game. Cory Paquette worked the first two innings for the Vikings and took the loss.

Vance pitches Vikings past Kalamazoo

CLERMONT, Fla. — Kara Vance pitched the Lawrence University softball team to a 5-1 nonconference victory over Kalamazoo College on Thursday at the National Training Center.

Vance went the distance, allowed only five hits, struck out one and walked one.

Amanda Jaskolski went 2-for-4 with a homer and drove in a pair of runs for Lawrence (5-4). Freshman Samantha Belletini went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and drove in three runs for the Vikings, and Alissa Geipel was 3-for-4.

Lawrence jumped on the Hornets (4-5) with a pair of runs in the top of the first when Jaskolski blasted a two-run homer. Cory Paquette and Belletini had back-to-back doubles in the second to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.

Kalamazoo cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the second, but Lawrence sealed the victory with a pair of runs in the sixth. After Jaskolski singled and Alex Chiodo walked, Belletini smacked a two-run double to give the Vikings a 5-1 edge.

Vance allowed a runner in both the sixth and seventh innings but worked out of trouble both times to nail down the win.

Buena Vista tops Vikings

TUCSON, Ariz. — The No. 25 Buena Vista University baseball team jumped on Lawrence University early and never let up in a 20-3 nonconference victory on Wednesday.

Lawrence (2-6) scored three times in the top of the first to take the lead, but the Beavers (11-1) regained the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Buena Vista scored three times in both the second and third, added a single run in the fourth and ended the game with nine runs in the sixth.

Tanner Truesdell went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs for the Beavers, who collected 21 hits.

Sam Kossow went 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings, who were limited to six hits.

Tyson Valentine pitched 2.2 innings of relief to earn the victory. Atley Gay allowed 12 hits over four innings and took the loss for Lawrence.

The Vikings wrap up their spring break trip on Thursday with a pair of games against Lewis and Clark.

 

Middlebury pulls out wild 15-13 win over Lawrence

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Middlebury College baseball team scored three times in the top of the eighth to take command and then held on for a 15-13 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Tuesday.

The Panthers led 12-11 heading to the eighth when they scored three times to push the lead to four runs. Lawrence (2-5) cut the margin to 15-13 with two runs in the bottom half of the inning but could get no closer.

Aaron Benz continued his hot hitting with two more hits, including a triple, and he also drove in three runs for the Vikings. Jake Gordon had a team-best three hits, including a double, and Gabe Warshaw, Luke Zablocki and Brandon Vamarasi all had two hits for Lawrence.

Philip Clark took the loss despite allowing only two earned runs over six innings.

The Vikings, who made eight errors, scored four times in the bottom of the first and built a 7-5 lead through three innings. Middlebury struck for six runs in the fourth to go up 11-6. Lawrence added a single run in the bottom half of the fourth, two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth to cut the lead to 12-11.

MIT recovers to top Lawrence

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team rallied from a six-run deficit to tie it, but the Massachusetts Institute of Technology came back to pull out a 12-10 nonconference victory on Tuesday.

Lead-off hitter Savanna Marsicek went 4-for-5 with a double and a triple and scored four runs to pace the Vikings (4-4). Amanda Jaskolski and Alissa Geipel both had three hits, including a pair of doubles from Jaskolski, and both drove in two runs for Lawrence. Taylor Dodson went 2-for-4 and had three runs batted in for the Vikings.

Lawrence was down 8-2 after the first inning, but the Vikings chipped away at the lead. The Vikings scored three times in the second on run-scoring singles from Marsicek and Geipel and Dodson’s sacrifice fly.

MIT pushed the back to 9-5, but the Vikings scored a run on Geipel’s RBI single in the third to cut the lead back to 9-6.

Lawrence then scored three times in the fifth to tie it at 9-9. Marsicek tripled to start the rally, and Anna Wawiorka singled to cut the lead to 9-7. Wawiorka scored on an error on Jaskolski’s ground ball, and Jaskolski came home to tie it when Dodson singled.

MIT started the bottom of the sixth with three consecutive hits and scored three times in the inning to grab a 12-9 edge. Lawrence got a run back in the top of the seventh on Jaskolski’s RBI double, but the Engineers avoided any further damage to secure the win.

Alexandra Marshall worked the final two innings to pick up the win for MIT.

Vikings pull away late to rout Carleton

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team scored four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to down Carleton College 12-4 in a nonconference game on Tuesday.

Alex Chiodo went 3-for-3 and Anna Wawiorka was 3-for-4 to pace Lawrence’s 16-hit attack. Wawiorka and Amanda Jaskolski both homered and drove in a pair of runs. Alissa Geipel went 2-for-4 and also drove in two runs for the Vikings (4-3).

Lawrence had built leads of 2-0 and 4-2 with the help of home runs. Wawiorka hit a solo shot in the first and Jaskolski belted a two-run blast in the third, but Carleton tied it at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth.

The Vikings pulled away for good in the bottom of the fifth. Taylor Dodson started the inning with a double, and Chiodo and Samantha Belletini followed with singles to score Dodson. After the Vikings loaded the bases, Geipel delivered a two-run single to put the Vikings up 7-4. Wawiorka then singled to score Savanna Marsicek for an 8-4 lead.

Lawrence then ended the game with four more runs in the sixth. The Vikings got a walk and an error to start the inning, and Brielle Bartes singled to drive in Chiodo with the first run of the inning. Jessica Demski followed with a single to score Cory Paquette and Lawrence led 10-4. An error in the outfield on Marsicek’s fly ball allowed Bartes and Tierney Duffy to score and end the game via the eight-run rule.

Kara Vance tossed three innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. She allowed three hits, struck out one and walked one.

Oles shut down Lawrence

TAMPA, Fla. — The St. Olaf College men’s tennis team downed Lawrence University 9-0 in a nonference match on Tuesday. The Oles won all nine matches in straight sets. Lawrence wraps up its spring break matches on Friday when it takes on Calvin College.

Vikings edge Luther in 10 innings

TUCSON, Ariz. — Dan Taylor singled and scored in the 10th inning to lift the Lawrence University baseball team to a 14-13 nonconference victory over Luther College on Monday at the Kino Sports Complex.

Taylor led off the top of the 10th with a single and moved to second on a bunt. Jake Gordon followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Joel Birch then grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Taylor scored on the play to give the Vikings the 14-13 edge.

Atley Gay set down the Norse in order in the bottom half of the inning to pick up the save. Drew Doares went 2.1 innings of relief to earn the victory.

Taylor, Aaron Benz and Sam Kossow all collected three hits for the Vikings (2-4), and Benz and Kossow both drove in a pair of runs. Luke Zablocki, Gordon, Birch and Gabe Warshaw all had two hits for Lawrence, and Zablocki drove in three runs.

Lawrence, which collected 19 hits, led 7-4 after two innings after scoring three times in the first and four times in the second. Kossow and Benz both had run-scoring singles in the first, and Kossow had an RBI double in the second with Benz collecting another run-scoring single.

Luther battled back to take a 9-8 lead after six innings, but Lawrence tied it on Gordon’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.

The Vikings then scored four times in the eighth to grab  13-9 lead. Zablocki had a two-run single to put the Vikings up 11-9. Taylor singled to score Zablocki, and Warshaw added a sacrifice fly for a four-run lead.

The lead didn’t last as Luther (4-3) scored four times in the bottom half of the inning to tie it and set up the dramatic extra-inning victory by the Vikings.
