Lawrence takes down Mules 8-4

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team jumped on Colby College early on Monday and went on to an 8-4 nonconference victory over the Mules at the National Training Center.

Amanda Jaskolski went 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs batted in to pace the Vikings’ 12-hit attack. Anna Wawiorka went 3-for-4 and Katie Schumacher collected two hits and three RBIs for Lawrence (3-3). Alissa Geipel also drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.

Kara Vance picked up the win in relief for the Vikings. She pitched the final 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and no runs.

Lawrence jumped on the Mules with three runs in the top of the first. Wawiorka started the rally with a two-out single, and Jaskolski then blasted a two-run homer. After Alex Chiodo walked, Taylor Dodson doubled to score Chiodo and Lawrence led 3-0.

The Vikings made it 5-0 with a pair of runs in the second. After Schumacher doubled and Rheya Upadhyaya singled, Geipel smashed a two-run double.

Colby then scored four times in the bottom of the third to trim the margin to 5-4, but Lawrence countered in the top of the fifth. Schumacher delivered a three-run, bases-clearing double to put the Vikings up 8-4.

Vance then retired nine of the final 10 hitters she faced to secure the victory.

Middlebury holds off Vikings

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Middlebury College softball team built a big lead and then had to shut down a Lawrence University comeback to preserve an 11-7 nonconference victory on Monday at the National Training Center.

The Panthers built an 11-2 edge with the help of a five-run fourth inning, but Lawrence (2-3) struck for five runs in the bottom of the seventh before Middlebury escaped the jam.

Sarah Freyre went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in five to pace Middlebury.

Amanda Jaskolski went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs, and Taylor Dodson also had two RBIs for the Vikings.

Lawrence put together its five-run rally in the seventh with just three hits, but the Vikings got some help with two Middlebury errors and a hit batsman. Dodson had a two-run single in the inning, and Rheya Upadhyaya also picked up a run-scoring single.

Carleton downs Lawrence 12-7

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Carleton College baseball team jumped on Lawrence University early and went on to a 12-7 nonconference win over the Vikings on Sunday.

Carleton scored four times in the first and added two more in the second to lead 6-1 after two innings. The Vikings rallied, but the Knights scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory.

Lawrence (1-4) had a 13-12 edge in hits and were led by outfielder Aaron Benz, who has started the season red-hot. Benz went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and drove in a run.

Sam Kossow and Brandon Vamarasi both had a pair of hits for the Vikings as nine Lawrence players collected at least one hit.

Lawrence scored three times in the third to trim Carleton’s lead to 6-4 as Kossow had a two-run single and Benz picked up a run-scoring double.

Carleton scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to push the lead back to 9-4. The Vikings got two runs back in the top of the eighth on Vamarasi’s RBI single and Brandon Klar’s sacrifice fly. Carleton then scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to pull away again.

Thaddaeus Gregory pitched five innings to pick up the victory for the Knights. Kelton Jenkins went 4.1 innings and took the loss for Lawrence.

Missouri-St. Louis shuts out Vikings

TAMPA, Fla. — The University of Missouri-St. Louis defeated Lawrence University 9-0 on Sunday in a nonconference match. A NCAA Division II school, the Tritons won each match in straight sets as Lawrence faced a team filled with players from around the world.

This was the first match for the Vikings during a week of practice and competition during Lawrence’s spring break period.

Vikings pick up split with Caltech

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Lawrence University baseball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday as it split a nonconference doubleheader with Caltech.

The Vikings won the opener 9-8 and dropped the nightcap 15-1.

In the opener, Gabe Warshaw, Aaron Benz, Joel Birch, Luke Zablocki and Brandon Vamarasi all had two hits for the Vikings (1-3), who pounded out 13 hits. Zablocki homered and drove in a pair of  runs.

Freshman Joe Krivit pitched seven innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. He allowed 10 hits, struck out one and walked six.

Lawrence trailed 3-2 when the Vikings struck for five runs in the top of the third. Zablocki blasted a two-run homer to put Lawrence up 4-3, and the Vikings added three more runs on a sacrifice fly, a ground out and Birch’s run-scoring single for a 7-3 lead.

Lawrence went up 9-4 with a pair of runs in the seventh on Vamarasi’s run-scoring double Craig Batchelor’s RBI single.

Caltech picked up a run in the bottom half of the inning and added three more in the eighth to cut the lead to 9-8. Davis Ogilvie worked around a walk in the ninth to secure the victory for Lawrence.

In the nightcap, Daniel Chou scattered eight hits over seven innings to lead the Beavers to the victory.

Benz went 3-for-3 for Lawrence and scored the Vikings’ only run with a solo homer. Tim Menninger went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs for Caltech.

Gene Shipanik went 3.2 innings and took the loss.

Vikings squeeze past Bethel 3-1

CLERMONT, Fla. — Kara Vance went the distance to lead the Lawrence University softball team to a 3-1 nonconference victory over Bethel (Minn.) University on Saturday at the National Training Center.

Vance allowed six hits over seven innings, struck out one and walked one, to earn the victory. Karli Persson came on in relief to start the fourth inning and took the loss for Bethel (9-6).

Amanda Jaskolski, Taylor Dodson and Cory Paquette all went 2-for-3 to pace the Vikings (2-2).

Jaskolski helped give Lawrence the lead when she doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth in a scoreless game. Alex Chiodo followed with a line drive single to score pinch-runner Rheya Upadhyaya and Lawrence led 1-0. Dodson and Paquette followed with back-to-back singles, and Chiodo scored to put the Vikings up 2-0.

Bethel trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings got that run back in the bottom half of the frame. Alissa Geipel singled and moved to third on Jaskolski’s single. She then scored on Chiodo’s squeeze bunt and Lawrence led 3-1.

Vance then allowed only one baserunner in the final two innings to secure the victory.

Carthage tops Vikings

CLERMONT, Fla. — A four-run fourth inning propelled the Carthage College softball team to a 9-4 nonconference victory Lawrence University on Saturday at the National Training Center.

The Lady Reds led 5-2 and then sealed the win with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Darian Pelsor and Katie Morman had three hits apiece to pace Carthage (1-0). Pelsor also pitched two hitless innings of relief to pick up the victory.

Anna Wawiorka went 2-for-4 to pace Lawrence (1-2), which was limited to five hits. Katie Schumacher homered and drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.

Liz Barthels allowed eight hits over the first three innings and took the loss.

Hamline sweeps season-opening doubleheader from Lawrence

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Hamline University baseball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Friday by the scores of 16-9 and 27-3.

It was the season opener for Lawrence (0-2), which saw Hamline pull away late in both games.

In the opener, Lawrence led 5-2 after the top of the fifth, but the Pipers scored five times in the bottom of the fifth and then added four runs in the seventh and five in the eighth.

Joel Birch went 4-for-5 and Jake Gordon was 3-for-5 to pace the Vikings. Aaron Benz, Sam Kossow and Dan Taylor all had two hits for Lawrence. Benz had a homer and a double and drove in four runs, and Kossow drove in three runs.

 Atley Gay pitched the first five innings and took the loss.

In the nightcap, Lawrence scored three times in the bottom of the third and trailed 5-3. Hamline then scored five times in the fourth and added seven more in the fifth to seal the win.

Benz, Kossow and Brandon Klar add had two hits for the Vikings. Drew Doares pitched the first three innings and took the loss.

Lawrence rallies to top Fredonia 8-7

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team rallied from a five-run deficit to post an 8-7 nonconference victory over the State University of New-York Fredonia on Friday at the National Training Center.

The Vikings (1-1) trailed 7-2 before striking for five runs in the fifth to tie it and then adding the winning run in the sixth.

Anna Wawiorka, Alex Chiodo and Alissa Geipel had two hits apiece to pace Lawrence’s 11-hit attack, Amanda Jaskolski drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.

Kara Vance picked up the win in relief for Lawrence. She didn’t allow a hit over the final two innings, struck out two and didn’t walk a batter.

Lawrence trailed 7-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth and there were two outs in the frame before the Vikings did all their damage. Tierney Duffy reached on an error, and Wawiorka followed with a single. Jaskolski smacked a two-run single to cut the margin to 7-4. Chiodo followed with a double to score pinch-runner Rheya Upadhyaya. Samantha Belletini then singled to score Chiodo to cut the lead to 7-6. Taylor Dodson followed with a double to score Belletini and tie it at 7-7.

The Vikings started the winning rally off reliever Kelsey Gannett in the sixth when Geipel walked and Savanna Marsicek reached on an error. After a sacrifice bunt, Wawiorka singled to score Geipel and the Vikings led 8-7.

Vance worked a perfect seventh to secure the win.

Maddy Stavish, Kim Lotocki, Alyssa Morgan and Kate Nicholson all had two hits for Fredonia (2-5), and Erin Mushtare drove in three runs.

Vikings edged by Geneseo in opener

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team dropped a 2-1 nonconference decision to the State University of New York-Geneseo in the season opener on Friday at the National Training Center.

Corrin Spallone limited Lawrence (0-1) to only two hits to get the win, but Kara Vance was almost as good for the Vikings. Vance went the distance and gave up just five hits, struck out one and walked one.

Cory Paquette doubled for Lawrence, and Tierney Duffy had a single for the two Lawrence hits. Elise Porreca went 2-for-3 to pace the Knights.

Geneseo scored twice in the bottom of the second on a pair of hits. Lawrence cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the top of the third when Paquette led off with a double and later scored on Tierney’s single.

The Vikings had runners on base in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t get the tying run across the plate.
