Jones takes seventh to pace Vikings at NCAA regional

DETROIT, Mich. — Graham Jones placed seventh in men’s sabre to pace the Lawrence University fencing teams at Saturday’s NCAA Midwest Regional at the University of Detroit Mercy.

Jones went 3-6 during pool competition and then defeated Austin Carlisle of Detroit Mercy 15-6 in round two. John Hallston of Notre Dame beat Jones 15-9 to start round three. Ohio State’s Alistair Delchamps defeated Jones 15-10 to drop Jones into the seventh-place match. Jones then beat Cleveland State’s tom Bienvenu 15-12 for seventh.

In men’s epee, Lawrence’s top finisher was Moses Zarkin-Scott, who finished 12th. Zarkin-Scott went 2-3 in pool competition and was eliminated with a 12-3 loss to Cleveland State’s Paul Duchow in the second round.

Katie Blackburn was the top finisher for the Lawrence women as she took ninth in epee. Blackburn received a bye in the first round and then went 3-2 in pool play in round two. Blackburn was eliminated after a 10-3 loss to Ohio State’s Rebecca Rutan in the third round.

Shelby Guinn led Lawrence in women’s sabre with a 12th-place finish. She received a bye in the first round and then went 2-3 in round two pool competition. Guinn was eliminted with a 15-4 loss to Ohio State’s Alexa Antipas in the third round. Katherine Ling placed 13th for the Vikings in women’s foil. Ling went 4-1 in first round pool competition and followed that by going 1-6 in second round pool competition. Notre Dame’s Madison Zeiss then eliminated Ling 15-5 in round three.

Hastings shuts out Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa — Hastings College downed Lawrence University 9-0 in a nonconference match on Saturday at the Bear Center at Grinnell College.

Hastings, a NAIA Division II school located in Hastings, Neb., won every match in straight sets.

Vikings fall to Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College men’s tennis team downed Lawrence University 8-1 in a nonconference match on Saturday at the Bear Center.

Lawrence’s lone victory in the match came at No. 2 singles. Lawrence’s David Jumes defeated Tommy Pitcher 6-4, 4-6, 1-0. Jumes won the third-set supertiebreaker 10-6.

Vikings finish eighth at MFC Championships

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Lawrence University fencing team finished eighth overall at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships on Sunday at the University of Notre Dame.

The women’s team finished seventh overall, and the men were 11th. Lawrence finished with 1,075 points, and Ohio State took the title with 1,590.

Men’s sabre turned in a strong performance and placed fourth. Lawrence opened with a 5-0 win over Bowling Green and then defeated Detroit Mercy 5-2 in the quarterfinals. Notre Dame defeated the Vikings 5-1 in the semifinals, and the Vikings dropped a 5-4 decision to Cleveland State in the third-place match.

In men’s epee, Lawrence finished ninth. The Vikings lost 5-1 to Wayne State to open play, but Lawrence bounced back to beat Michigan 5-4 in the plate quarterfinals. The Vikings then beat Bradley 5-1 and topped Illinois 5-2 in the ninth-place match.

Men’s foil lost to Indiana 5-4 in the play-in round and was eliminated.

Women’s foil equaled the top finish by the Vikings with a fourth-place effort. The Vikings opened the competition with a 5-0 win over the University of Chicago, and Lawrence then downed Michigan 5-3 in the quarterfinals. Notre Dame topped Lawrence 5-0 in the semifinals, and the Vikings dropped a 5-0 decision to Northwestern in the third-place match.

Women’s epee grabbed a seventh-place finish. Lawrence opened play with a 5-2 win over Detroit Mercy before falling to Ohio State 5-0 in the quarterfinals. Lawrence then fell 5-4 to Michigan in the consolation bracket, but the Vikings bounced back to beat Wayne State 5-3 in the seventh-place match.

Women’s sabre took 11th place, coming back after a 5-4 loss to Michigan State in the first round. Lawrence then defeated Illinois 5-1 in the plate quarterfinals before a 5-3 loss to Indiana in the semifinals. Lawrence then downed Case Western Reserve 5-3 in the 11th-place match.

Jones takes 10th to lead individuals at MFC Championships

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Graham Jones finished 10th in sabre to lead Lawrence University in Saturday’s individual competition at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships at the University of Notre Dame.

Jones, the ninth seed, won a pair of matches before dropping a 15-10 decision to Notre Dame’s Alex Coccia in the round of 16.

Jake Hodges grabbed 18th place for the Vikings in foil. After going 6-0 in his pool, Hodges was eliminated with a 15-4 loss to the University of Michigan’s Geoff Marino in the round of 32. Moses Zarkin-Scott took 24th in epee to pace the Vikings. He went 4-1 in pool play and was eliminated after a 15-6 loss to Ohio State’s Matt Bogard in the round of 32.

Mariah Wilkerson was the top finisher among the women as she took 15th in epee. She went 5-1 in pool play and then advanced to the round of 16 before being eliminated 15-4 by Northwestern University’s Dina Bazarbayeva, who went on to win the title.

In women’s foil, Laura Barksdale placed 22nd to lead the Vikings. She went 5-0 in pool play but was beaten 15-11 by Northwestern’s Sarit Kapon in the round of 32. Shelby Guinn led the Vikings by placing 26th in sabre. She went 4-2 in her pool and was eliminted with a 15-5 loss to Northwestern’s Hee Kyung Oh.

Davies takes title at MWC Championships

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Cam Davies grabbed the title in the 3,000 meters on Saturday to pace the Lawrence University track teams at the Midwest Conference Championships at Cornell College.

Davies raced to his first individual conference championship and set a new school record in the process with a time of 8:46.71. Davies broke the record of 8:50.83, set in 2012 by Sam Stevens. Davies finished nearly seven seconds ahead of second-place finisher Ben Taylor of Grinnell College. Lawrence’s Kyle Dockery took sixth in the event with a time of 9:10.26.

JP Ranumas grabbed second place in the 60-meter hurdles, and his time of 8.66 seconds set a new school record. Ranumas broke his own record of 8.67, which was set last season. Illinois College’s John Piper won the event in 8.30 seconds.

The other top finishers for the men were a pair of relay teams. The distance medley relay team of Dan Thoresen, Chris Fuelling, Tyler Herman and Mike Mangian took third in 10:44.32, and the 1,600 relay team of Herman, Ranumas, Mangian and Thoresen was ffith in 3:36.51.

The Lawrence men finished eighth in the team standings with 44 points. The Lawrence women were ninth with 14 points.

The top finisher for the women was the distance medley relay team of Katherine Dannecker, Kate Kilgus, Liza Girsova and Cora Williams, which was fourth in 13:20.90. The 1,600 relay team of Girsova, Kilgus, Katie Barie and Anna Bolgrien took seventh in 4:23.90. Bolgrien had the top individual finish by taking seventh in the 800 in 2:26.37.

Perushek lifts Vikings past Knox 5-4

GALESBURG, Ill. — Ethan Perushek won a hard-fought match at No. 6 singles to lift the Lawrence University men’s tennis team to a 5-4 nonconference win over Knox College on Saturday.

Perushek dropped the first set to Dustin Loch 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker) but then came back to win 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreaker), 6-4. The third set was tied 4-4 before Perushek won two consecutive games to close out the Prairie Fire. Lawrence (2-3) also picked up singles victories from David Jumes at No. 2 and Sam Wiener at No. 5.

The Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams of Jumes and Wiener and Perushek and Adam Busch also posted victories to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead in the match after the doubles play.

Brisbois paces Vikings on opening day of MWC Championships

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Jamie Brisbois ran to a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meters to lead the Lawrence University track team on Friday’s opening day of the Midwest Conference Championships at Cornell College.

Brisbois covered the 5,000 meters in 15:44.85 and teammate Kyle Dockery grabbed sixth place in 16:02.77. Lawrence’s Dan Thoresen also placed for the Vikings as he took eighth in the mile in 4:37.04.

Lawrence’s sprint medley relay team of Tyler Herman, J.P. Ranumas, Dalton Sendelbach and Chris Fuelling took sixth in 3:43.86. The 800 relay team of Herman, Ranumas, Sendelbach and Bjorn Gowdy-Jaehnig took eighth in 1:36.76.

Kristen Bischel was the top finisher on the women’s side as she took seventh in the 5,000 in 19:26.75. The sprint medley relay team of Liza Girsova, Anna Bolgrien, Katie Barie and Kate Kilgus grabbed seventh in 4:36.72.

The Lawrence men are in eighth place with 13 points, and the women are ninth with four points.

The meet concludes on Saturday.

Dannecker, Karlsson pace Vikings at Eastbay Invitational

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Katherine Dannecker and Elin Karlson both recorded fifth-place finishes to pace the Lawrence University track teams on Saturday at the UW-Stevens Point Eastbay Invitational.

Dannecker grabbed fifth in the one-mile run with a time of 5:40.55. Karlson was fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:32.55. In the same event, Kristen Bishel raced to seventh place and Liz Landes was ninth.

On the men’s side, the 800-meter relay team of Dalton Sendelbach, Tyler Lueck, Bjorn Gowdy-Jaehnig and Eddie Rueda placed sixth in 1:40.21.
