Vikings explode for 10-1 win over Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. — The Lawrence University hockey team exploded for nine goals in the final two periods Friday night and rolled to a 10-1 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Northland College.

Lawrence (1-2-0, 1-2-0 MCHA) got a pair of goals from both senior Brad Scurfield and freshman Rudi Pino. Peter Emery made 15 saves to pick up the win.

The game was tied 1-1 early in the second period when Phil Bushbacher scored on the power play to give Lawrence a 2-1 edge at the 5:38 mark.

Pino then got his first collegiate goal at the 10:04 mark, and the Vikings racked up three more goals in the next 5:34. Scurfield and Gustav Lindgren scored, and freshman Matt Moore capped the outburst with his first collegiate goal, a short-hander, at the 15:39 mark for a 6-1 lead.

Lawrence made it 7-1 on Derek Brickan’s first goal of the season early in the period, and Scurfield added a power-play goal midway through the period for an 8-1 edge.

The Vikings added goals from William Thoren and Pino in the final 5:06 to cap the scoring.

The 10 goals is the most for Lawrence since a 10-5 victory over Concordia (Wis.) University back on Jan. 19, 2008.

Mason Riley allowed all 10 goals, made 39 saves and took the loss for Northland (0-3-0, 0-3-0). Lawrence held a 49-16 edge in shots on goal.

Flack, Winter pace Vikings at UWRF

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Evan Flack and Taylor Winter both won a pair of events to pace the Lawrence University swim teams on Saturday at UW-River Falls.

The Falcons topped the Vikings 54-51 in the men’s meet, and River Falls defeated Lawrence 62-40 in the women’s meet.

Flack won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.91 seconds and took first in the 100 freestyle in 50.01.

Winter won the 1,650 freestyle in 18:39.84 and grabbed first in the 500 freestyle in 5:32.26.

Turnovers, Mortensen send Vikings to defeat at Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. — Knox College’s Derek Mortensen ran for 203 yards and six touchdowns, and the Lawrence University football team turned the ball over five times in a 63-42 Midwest Conference loss on Saturday at the Knosher Bowl.

Lawrence (2-7, 2-6 MWC) lost despite have more total yards (583-520),  running 30 more plays and owning a 7:05 advantage in time of possession over the Prairie Fire (2-7, 2-6).

Lawrence quarterback Luke Barthelmess completed 27 of 50 passes for 386 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Barthelmess broke Jim Petran’s career passing yards record of 5,431 yards and the junior quarterback now has 5,738 yards for his career.

Dominique Dirden caught 11 passes for 184 yards for the Vikings, and Tyler Mazur grabbed eight passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Mazur became just the sixth receiver in Lawrence history to pass 2,000 career receiving yards and now has 2,031. Senior running back Ben Hartman carried only nine times but had 89 yards for an impressive 9.9-yard average.

Knox built a 21-14 halftime lead with the help of four Lawrence turnovers in the first half. The Prairie Fire took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 52 yards for a touchdown and a 28-14 edge.

Another turnover gave Knox the ball back at the Lawrence 16-yard line, and Mortensen scored two plays later for a 35-14 lead.

The Vikings, who recovered three Knox fumbles on the afternoon, then failed to convert a fourth-and-1 at their own 34-yard line, and Knox took over on downs. Knox scored two plays later and led 42-14. Lawrence’s next drive ended on downs at the Knox 31, and the Prairie Fire drove for another score and a 49-14 lead.

Barthelmess than ran eight yards for a touchdown and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Mandich to trim the lead to 49-28 after three quarters.

Knox then hit on an 85-yard touchdown pass to crush any hope of a Lawrence comeback. Barthelmess ran for another touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to Mazur in the final quarter.

Falcons rally to top Lawrence

The Concordia (Wis.) University hockey team rallied for three goals in the third period and posted a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association win over Lawrence University on Saturday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Lawrence (0-2-0, 0-2-0 MCHA) led 1-0 after Brad Scurfield’s power-play goal at the 12:35 mark of the second period.

Concordia (2-3-0, 2-2-0) evened the score at 1-1 on Franco Loparco’s goal just 1:47 into the third period. The Falcons struck again with a power-play goal from Devin Stuermer at 3:34 to take a 2-1 advantage.

The Vikings came back to tie it at 2-2 on Phil Bushbacher’s goal at 13:50, but the Falcons took advantage of a power play to regain the lead. Dan Schilts scored on the man-advantage at 15:15 to give Concordia a 3-2 edge.

Concordia was on the power play again in the final minute when the Vikings pulled goaltender Peter Emery for an extra skater, but Lawrence couldn’t get the equalizer.

Emery made 26 saves and took the loss. Jake Hebda made 29 saves for the victory.

Vikings edged by Concordia in season opener

MEQUON, Wis. — The Lawrence University hockey team opened its season on Friday night with a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association loss to Concordia (Wis.) University at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

Lawrence fell behind in the first 30 seconds of the contest and were never able to overtake the Falcons (1-3-0, 1-2-0 MCHA).

Concordia scored just 24 seconds into the game on Devin Stuermer’s unassisted goal. Huck Saunders scored on the power play for the Vikings to tie the game at 1-1 just 7:35 into the first period.

Kevin Michaelcavage countered with a power-play goal for Concordia early in the second period, and the score stayed that way until Travis Payne scored at the 15:12 mark of the third for a 3-1 lead.

Brandon Boelter got his first collegiate goal for Lawrence just 46 seconds later off a pass from Brad Scurfield to trim the lead to 3-2, but that’s as close as the Vikings would get.

Goaltender Jake Hebda made 31 saves to earn the win, and Peter Emery stopped 30 shots for the Vikings and took the loss.

St. Norbert hangs on for 1-0 win over Vikings

The St. Norbert College women’s soccer team survived some second-half pressure and hung on for a 1-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Sunday at Whiting Field West.

St. Norbert (12-3-3, 7-1-2 MWC) got the game’s only goal on Zoe Kurth’s header in the 35th minute off a corner kick from Jaci Kulow.

Lawrence senior goalkeeper Cassie Burke kept the Vikings (4-13-0, 3-7-0) within striking distance with some stellar play in the net. Burke finished with 10 saves in her final collegiate contest.

Lawrence put the pressure on late, and St. Norbert goalkeeper Sarah Platzer was forced to make a save on Sarah Tiano’s shot with four minutes left. Platzer finished with four saves. The Vikings had the ball inside the St. Norbert penalty box when time expired.

Barthelmess, Mazur lead Vikings past Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa — Quarterback Luke Barthelmess ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, and receiver Tyler Mazur had another big day as the Lawrence University football team beat Grinnell College 24-14 in a Midwest Conference game Saturday at Rosenbloom Field.

Barthelmess ran 17 times for 103 yards and topped the 100-yard mark for the second time this season. Barthelmess also completed 14 of 29 passes for 207 yards. Barthelmess, who also topped the 100-yard rushing mark in the season opener against Cornell, became the first Lawrence back since Craig Ebert in 2008 to rush for more than 100 yards in a game twice in the same season.

Mazur caught six passes for 138 yards and a touchdown, and he ran 11 times for 40 yards.

The Vikings (2-6, 2-5 MWC) built a 17-0 lead and then used a 98-yard scoring drive in the third quarter to help put the game away.

Lawrence took the opening kickoff and marched 70 yards in nine plays for a 7-0 lead. Ben Hartman had a 25-yard run to give the Vikings a first down at the Grinnell three-yard line, and Barthelmess hit Mazur with a touchdown pass on the next play.

After Grinnell (2-6, 2-6) gave up the ball on downs on its first possession of the game, Lawrence took over at its own 21. The Vikings got runs from Barthelmess of 19 and 27 yards, the latter giving Lawrence a first down at the Grinnell 12. Lawrence scored three plays later on Barthelmess’ five-yard run for a 14-0 lead.

Lawrence drove all the way to the Grinnell five-yard line on its next possession but had to settle for Cody Robel’s 23-yard field goal and led 17-0 at the half.

Grinnell scored on its first possession of the second half with a 62-yard drive for a touchdown. Quarterback Sam Poulos hit Jacob Meixler with an 11-yard scoring pass to trim the margin to 17-7.

After an exchange of punts, Lawrence took over at its own two-yard line with 5:22 left in the third quarter. The Vikings moved 98 yards in 13 plays for a touchdown with just 15 seconds left in the third quarter. The Vikings converted all three third downs on the drive and got a 24-yard completion to Dominque Dirden to the Grinnell one-yard line. Barthelmess scored three plays later to put Lawrence up 24-7.

Grinnell got a 68-yard touchdown pass from Poulos to Meixler to cut the lead to 24-14 with 6:28 left in the game, but the Lawrence defense held the Pioneers right there.

The Pioneers got the ball back but gave it up just four plays later, and Lawrence got a first down to run out the clock.

Lawrence hits the road again next Saturday with a game at Knox College.

Vikings open season with victory over Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University swim teams opened their season with a dual meet victory over Beloit College on Saturday.

The Lawrence women defeated Beloit 130-63, and the Viking men posted a 110-70 victory.

On the women’s side, Hannah Gabriel, Hayley Cardinal and Julia Heller won multiple events for the Vikings. Gabriel won the 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle. Cardinal took wins in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Heller won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

Leading the men’s contingent were Cameron Gmehlin and Evan Flack. Gmehlin won the 200 IM and took first in the 100 breaststroke. Flack took home victories in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

Lawrence falls to Grinnell in four sets

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College volleyball team defeated Lawrence University 3-1 in a tight Midwest Conference match on Saturday at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers (7-21, 5-5 MWC) won 25-21, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21.

Jenna Picha paced Lawrence (8-17, 2-8) with 10 kills, and Shannon McLain and Bethany Larsen added nine kills apiece. Kathleen Rowland paced the Vikings with 23 digs, and Diane McLeod had 24 assists.

Cullen’s goal gives Lawrence win over Bucs

Joe Cullen scored in the 67th minute to lift the Lawrence University men’s soccer team to a 1-0 Midwest Conference victory over Beloit College on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Cullen got the game’s only goal at 66:58 off passes from Karl Mayer and Oliver Newsom.

Senior goalkeeper Kevin Aslett made that goal stand up by making three saves to pick up his fourth shutout of the season. The Lawrence defenders allowed Beloit (11-4-1, 6-3-1 MWC) only six shots in the match.

The Vikings (8-8-1, 5-4-1) fired 15 shots at BJ Kiser, who made seven saves for the Bucs.
