Saints pull away early in win over Lawrence

DE PERE, Wis. — The College of St. Scholastic scored three goals in the first five minutes on Friday and rolled to a 9-2 nonconference victory over Lawrence University in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association/Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Thanksgiving Classic at the Cornerstone Community Center.

Brenden Kotyk and Brandon Nowakowski both had two goals and two assists to pace St. Scholastica (2-5-0).

Renato Engler scored his first career goal for Lawrence (2-5-0), and Rudi Pino added a short-handed goal for the Vikings.

The Saints led 3-0 just 4:59 into the game and held that advantage into the second period. St. Scholastica then scored three goals, including two by Nowakowski, in the first 9:09 of the second period to pull away.

Engler finally got Lawrence on the board with a power-play goal at 17:19 of the second. Pino scored his short-hander with just 50 seconds left in the game.

Michael Baldino made 40 saves and took the loss for Lawrence, which was out-shot 49-18. Colin Rundell made 16 saves to pick up the win.

Lawrence finishes the Thanksgiving Classic when it faces No. 6 St. Norbert College on Saturday evening.

Balanced attack leads Vikings past Marian

Five Lawrence University players scored in double figures as the Vikings downed Marian University 83-76 in a nonconference game Wednesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Conor Klusendorf paced Lawrence (1-1) with 17 points, and he added seven rebounds four assists, four blocks and a steal. Chris Siebert, who drained a huge 3-pointer in the final minute, added 16 points and a game-high eight assists.

Davis DeWolfe picked up 14 points and six rebounds for the Vikings. Max Burgess was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range, and finished with 13 points. Ryan DePouw added 10 points for Lawrence.

Cody Veleke led Marian (1-2) and all scorers with 23 points, and Sam Koslowski added 20 points for the Sabres.

Lawrence led by 13 at 50-37 early in the second half, but the Sabres went on a 9-0 run to trim the margin to 50-46 with 15:34 remaining. The Vikings pushed the lead back to 62-50 on a Burgess 3-pointer with 9:52 left.

The Vikings led 69-57 after a pair of DeWolfe free throws with 7:45 remaining, but Marian cut the lead to 72-69 after a Mike Keller three-point play with 3:32 left.

Veleke then made a pair of free throws with 3:10 remaining to trim the lead to 73-71, but Trace Sonnleitner buried a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 76-71 with 2:50 left.

The teams traded missed free throws before Keller’s layup cut the margin to 76-73. With the Vikings working the clock, Siebert went one-on-one on the perimeter and drained a 3-pointer with 39 seconds left to push Lawrence’s lead to 79-73.

The Sabres missed a 3-pointer, and Lawrence then hit 4 of 6 free throws in the final 27 seconds to seal the win.

Lawrence returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Illinois College to open Midwest Conference play.

Vikings dominate in Lawrence Triangular

The Lawrence University swim teams won 23 of 27 events on Saturday at the Lawrence Triangular at Boldt Natatorium.

Swimming against Ripon College and the Marquette University Swim Club, Lawrence had three swimmers win three individual events apiece.

On the women’s side, Hannah Gabriel won the 100-yard freestyle, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Leading the men was Evan Flack, who was first in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, and Cameron Gmehlin, who swam to victory in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

Winning two events apiece for the Vikings were Taylor Winter, Emily Flack and Hayley Cardinal.

Berger’s overtime goal caps Marian rally past Lawrence

Brian Berger scored 1:19 into overtime to lift the Marian University hockey team to a 4-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Berger’s goal capped a rally by Marian (4-3-1, 4-2-0 MCHA), which trailed 2-0 entering the final period. This marks the third time in four losses this season by Lawrence (2-4-0, 2-4-0) in which the Vikings led entering the third period.

Brandon Boelter gave Lawrence a 1-0 lead at the 7:27 mark of the first period, and the Vikings increased that lead to 2-0 when Paul Zuke scored just 12 seconds into the second period.

Lawrence held that advantage until the Sabres got a 5-on-3 power play early in the third period. Brendan Roberts scored on the two-man advantage to trim the lead to 2-1 at the 5:19 mark.

The Sabres then tied it on Tyler Klein’s goal at the 13:12 mark, and Roberts scored his second goal of the game just 3:23 later to put the Sabres up 3-2.

Lawrence pulled goaltender Peter Emery late, and the Vikings got the equalizer with the extra attacker. Phil Bushbacher scored for Lawrence with just 24 seconds remaining to tie it at 3-3 and force the overtime.

Emery made 22 saves and took the loss, and Josh Baker made 22 saves for Marian to pick up the win.

Marian rallies in third period to down Vikings

FOND DU LAC,  Wis. — The Marian University hockey team rallied for a pair of third-period goals to pull out a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Thursday at the Blue Line Ice Center.

Lawrence (2-3-0, 2-3-0 MCHA) led 2-1 heading to the third period, but the Sabres (3-3-1, 3-2-0) scored twice in the first seven minutes of the final period.

Lucas Mertz scored his first goal of the season just 4:13 into third period to tie the game at 2-2. Ashton Reinboldt then gave the Sabres the lead for good with his goal at the 6:53 mark.

Lawrence pulled goaltender Peter Emery for the final 1:14 but couldn’t get the equalizer. Emery made 35 saves and took the loss.

Marian pulled ahead 1-0 on Aaron Leonard’s goal with 2:21 remaining in the first period. That lead didn’t last as Phil Bushbacher scored his third goal of the season, a power-play tally, off a pass from Brandon Boelter with just 23 seconds left in the first.

Lawrence grabbed a 2-1 lead at 5:54 of the second when Brad Scurfield scored off passes from Bushbacher and Rudi Pino.

Marian goaltender Josh Baker didn’t allow anything the rest of the way and finished with 33 saves.

The teams wrap up the series on Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Pointers edge Lawrence 72-64

The No. 15 UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team pulled away early in the second half and then shut down a late Lawrence University rally for a 72-64 nonconference victory on Thursday at Alexander Gymnasium.

All-American Tyler Tillema, Trevor Hass and Clayton Heuer scored 14 points apiece to lead the Pointers (1-0).

Davis DeWolfe scored 23 points and hit 8 of 10 shots from the floor to pace Lawrence (0-1). Freshman Jamie Nikitas came off the bench and added 11 points and Chris Siebert had 10.

Lawrence pulled out to a 10-point lead at 21-11 with 10:04 left in the first half, but the Pointers dominated the rest of the first half. Stevens Point went on an 18-2 run to finish the half and led 29-23 at the break.

The Pointers then scored the first five points of the second half to pull ahead 36-23 with 18:11 remaining. Lawrence finally got its offense back in gear, but the Pointers would steadily build their lead to as many as 18 points midway through the second half.

Sparked by Nikitas, Lawrence went on a 7-0 run to trim the lead to 53-42 on a pair of Siebert free throws with 8:13 left. Lawrence kept chipping away and cut the lead to 58-51 when Nikitas hit a 3-pointer with 2:54 remaining.

DeWolfe then scored the next six points for the Vikings to cut the margin to 62-57 with 1:25 left. The Vikings had a chance to cut further into the margin, but Nikitas missed a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left.

Stevens Point then hit 10 consecutive free throws in the final 46 seconds to seal the victory.

Lawrence returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Marian University.

Marian holds off Vikings

The Marian University women’s basketball team rallied early in the second half and then held off Lawrence University for a 64-60 nonconference win on Thursday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Dani Huray led the Sabres (1-0) with a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. Alex Deshler also had a double-double for Lawrence (0-1) with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Katie Schumacher led the Vikings with 17 points and added seven rebounds..

The Sabres trailed by three at the half but went on a 20-4 run to open the second half. Marian hit five 3-pointers in that stretch and led 43-30 with 13:31 remaining.

Marian maintained a double-digit lead until the Vikings rallied late. Lawrence went on a 7-1 run, capped by Deshler’s jumper, to trim Marian’s lead to 58-55 with 2:34 left.

Marian got a layup from Huray, but Schumacher countered with a pair of free throws for the Vikings to cut it to 60-57 with 1:31 remaining. After a pair of Huray free throws, Deshler buried a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 62-60 with 25 seconds left.

Huray made one free throw with 18 seconds remaining, but the Vikings missed a layup on the other end and were forced to foul. Brianna Tietz hit a free throw with seven seconds left to seal the win.

Freshman Patsy Kealey was solid in her Lawrence debut with 11 points, and Amber Lisowe added 10 points for the Vikings.

Vikings rally for wild 8-6 win over Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. — The Lawrence University hockey team won a wild 8-6 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association shootout with Northland College on Saturday at the Bay Area Civic Center.

Lawrence (2-2-0, 2-2-0 MCHA) trailed 3-0 early, rallied for a 6-3 lead and then needed a penalty shot and empty-net goal to seal the victory over the Lumberjacks (0-4-0, 0-4-0).

Erik Soderlund scored a pair of goals for the Vikings, and Logan Lemirande and Rudi Pino both had three points. Senior goaltender Michael Baldino came on in relief and made 16 saves to pick up the victory for Lawrence.

Lawrence trailed 3-0 until Lemirande scored on the power play at the 17:44 mark of the first period. That started a run of six consecutive goals by the Vikings as Soderlund scored twice and Gustav Lindgren, Phil Bushbacher and Brandon Boelter all added goals to give Lawrence a 6-3 lead with 6:22 left in the second period.

The Lumberjacks came back and scored a power-play goal to cut the lead to 6-4 after two periods. Northland was 2-for-6 on the power play and Lawrence was 3-for-4.

Kraig Wright and Louis Labbe both scored for Northland in the first 6:32 of the third period to tie the score at 6-6.

Lawrence then got a penalty shot goal from freshman Matt Moore at the 12:24 mark to grab a 7-6 edge. It was the first penalty shot goal for the Vikings since Jon Bellotti scored at Adrian College on Jan. 23, 2010.

The Lumberbacks pulled goaltender Vincent DiCarlo late, and Brad Scurfield scored an empty-netter with 13 seconds left to seal the victory. DiCarlo made 35 saves as the Vikings piled up a 43-33 advantage in shots.

Lawrence swept the weekend road series, winning Friday’s night’s game 10-1.

Gabriel, Flack lead Vikings in battle with Whitewater

Evan Flack and Hannah Gabriel both won a pair of events Saturday to lead the Lawrence University swim teams in their dual meet with UW-Whitewater.

The Warhawks won the women’s meet 132-61, and Whitewater took the men’s meet 118-76.

Flack swam to victory in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.82 and won the 100 freestyle in 50.33 seconds.

Gabriel took the top spot in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.91 and swam to victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:29.43. Gabriel also teamed with Taylor Winter, Emily Flack and Chelsea Hameister to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.76.

Ripon edges Lawrence in wild football finale

In one of the wilder games in Lawrence University’s storied football rivalry with Ripon College, the Red Hawks pulled out a 56-55 Midwest Conference victory in the season finale in the Banta Bowl.

In the 112th meeting between the teams, Ripon (5-5, 5-4 MWC) scored a touchdown with 33 seconds left to rally from a 13-point deficit in the final 9:53.

Lawrence (2-8, 2-7) rolled up 583 yards of offense, and the Vikings were led by senior wide receiver Tyler Mazur and senior running back Ben Hartman. Mazur caught six passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns, and Hartman ran 14 times for 125 yards for a hefty 8.9-yard average and two touchdowns.

Max Herrmann paced Ripon with 21 carries for 140 yards, and quarterback Tom Sawyer had 22 carries for 107 yards.

Lawrence grabbed a 55-42 lead when quarterback Luke Barthelmess connected with Mazur for a 64-yard touchdown pass with 9:53 remaining in the game. The Lawrence defense then forced a three-and-out, but Dominique Dirden muffed Marshall Zahn’s punt and Ripon recovered at the Lawrence 10-yard line.

The Red Hawks scored two plays later on Michael Crusan’s six-yard run to trim the lead to 55-49 with 8:17 left.

After a penalty forced Lawrence to start at its own three-yard line on the ensuing drive, the Vikings moved to their own 26. Barthelmess then ripped off a 41-yard run but the play was called back by a holding penalty. Lawrence was forced to punt, and Ripon took over at its own 43.

Ripon moved 57 yards in 10 plays with Hermann plunging in from a yard out. Jacob Gahart added the extra point to give Ripon the 56-55 lead.

Lawrence got the ball back at its own 32 after the kickoff, but Ripon forced a fourth-down interception to end the game.

The Vikings scored on three of their four possessions in the opening quarter. Lawrence got a 59-yard touchdown catch from Mazur, a 21-yard scoring run from Hartman and a 17-yard touchdown run from Scott Vandeloo and led 20-7.

The teams then traded touchdowns as Mazur caught a 28-yard scoring pass, and Vandeloo added a five-yard touchdown run. Lawrence, which missed two consecutive extra points, went for two after Vandeloo’s touchdown as Mazur ran it in for a 34-21 lead at the half.

After a missed Ripon field goal, Lawrence took its opening possession of the second half and scored on Hartman’s five-yard touchdown run. The key play in the drive was Mazur’s 35-yard catch to the Ripon nine-yard line.

The teams then traded touchdowns as Dirden caught a 46-yard scoring pass, and Lawrence led 48-35 after three quarters.

Junior defensive end Andy Paider made a career-high 16 tackles, including a sack, for Lawrence. He also forced and recovered a fumble. Freshman defensive back Alex Opgenorth added 13 tackles and an interception for the Vikings.

The 111 combined points is the most in a game in Lawrence football history. The previous high was 105, which was done last week at Knox College.
