Big second quarter leads Carroll past Vikings

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carroll University football team scored 34 points in the second quarter and rolled to a 67-17 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Schneider Stadium.

The score was tied 10-10 heading into the second quarter, but the Pioneers scored five consecutive touchdowns to take a 44-10 lead and command of the game.

Joe Beckstrand ran 16 times for 165 yards to pace Carroll (5-1, 4-1 MWC). Ryan Young completed 15 of 24 passes for 174 yards and four touchdowns for the Pioneers.

Lawrence quarterback Luke Barthelmess was 17 of 36 for 219 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Jon Bruehl caught five passes for 98 yards and a touchdown to pace the Lawrence receivers.

The Vikings also gave up eight sacks on the afternoon. That put a huge dent in Lawrence’s rushing yardage, and the Vikings finished the game with just one rushing yard.

The Vikings took the lead early when Tyler Mazur caught a 39-yard pass from Barthelmess midway through the first quarter to put Lawrence up 7-3.

Carroll countered with a touchdown, but the Vikings got a 36-yard field goal from Cody Robel to tie the game at 10-10 late in the opening quarter.

That’s when the floodgates opened for Carroll. The Pioneers scored five touchdowns, including one defensive score, in the next 10 minutes.

Jon Bruehl caught a six-yard touchdown pass late in the first half to finally stop the scoring drought for Lawrence and make the halftime score 44-17.

Koula’s overtime goal gives Vikings win over Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Mallory Koula scored in the second overtime to lift the Lawrence University women’s soccer team to a 3-2 Midwest Conference victory over Monmouth College on Saturday.

Koula took a pass from Keli Muchowski and beat Monmouth goalkeeper Samantha Barranco in the second overtime to give Lawrence the victory.

The teams traded goals in the opening half. Caroline Borst, playing in her first game for the Vikings, scored to stake Lawrence to a 1-0 lead. Monmouth scored late in the first half for a 1-1 tie at the break.

Koula scored on a corner kick for the second time this season to give Lawrence a 2-1 lead, but the Scots forced the overtime with a late goal from Lauren Kellen.

Scots shut out Lawrence

MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Monmouth College men’s soccer team put on a scoring outburst late in the game and rolled to a 4-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday.

The game was scoreless until Monmouth’s Josh Del Valle got the Scots on the board in the 67th minute. Monmouth then added three goals in a five-minute span from the 72nd to the 77th minute to seal the victory.

Monmouth enjoyed a 16-11 edge in shots.

Vikings roll past Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — The Lawrence University women’s volleyball team powered to a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory over Illinois College on Saturday at Sherman Gymnasium.

Lawrence won 25-12, 25-15, 22-25, 25-11.

Clare Bohrer hammered out 19 kills and hit .457 on the afternoon to pace the Vikings (11-12, 4-1 MWC). Shannon McLain added 11 kills and freshman Presley Neuman added nine for the Vikings.

Diane McLeod directed the Lawrence attack and picked up a match-high 42 assists. Kathleen Rowland led three Lawrence players in double figures with 19 digs.

Monmouth tops Vikings in four sets

MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Monmouth College volleyball team shook off a loss in the first set and defeated Lawrence University 3-1 in a Midwest Conference match on Friday night.

The Scots won 19-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21 in a showdown of unbeaten MWC squads.

Chelsey Widdop paced Monmouth with 13 kills and Beth Dwyer added 10.

Clare Bohrer led the Vikings with 11 kills and Shannon McLain added eight. Diane McLeod directed the attack and picked up 31 assists. Kathleen Rowland paced the Vikings with 21 digs.

Vikings double up Carroll

The Lawrence University women’s tennis team picked up a 6-3 Midwest Conference victory over Carroll University on Thursday to remain unbeaten in league play.

The Vikings are now 3-0 in the North Division and a victory over St. Norbert on Sunday would give Lawrence the top seed from the division in the four-team conference tournament.

The Vikings (10-1 overall) swept the doubles from the Pioneers and took three singles matches. Beth Larson won at No. 1 singles, Gayatri Malhotra was victorious at No. 3, and Hannah Geoffrey won at No. 5.

Vikings blank Ripon to remain undefeated in MWC

RIPON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team rolled to a 9-0 Midwest Conference victory over Ripon College on Tuesday to remain unbeaten in the league.

Lawrence (9-1, 2-0 MWC North) swept the doubles, including an 8-1 victory at No. 1 by Beth Larson and Jenni Roesch, and didn’t drop a set in the singles. Both Gayatri Malhotra at No. 3 and Christina Schaupp at No. 4 posted 6-0, 6-0 victories.

Lawrence ran its winning streak against Ripon to eight consecutive matches. The Vikings have posted three shutouts during that stretch, which dates back to the 2004 season.

Lawrence is tied with Carroll University and St. Norbert atop the North Division. The Vikings host Carroll on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Lawrence Courts.

Vikings fall short against Red Hawks

RIPON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision at Ripon College on Wednesday.

Lawrence (2-8-1, 0-3-1 MWC) outshot the Red Hawks 26-11 in the match.

Ripon scored twice in the first half and led 2-0 midway through the second half when Mallory Koula scored at 62:30 for the Vikings to cut the margin in half.

Brandi Peltier countered for Ripon with a goal at 67:17 to give Ripon a 3-1 edge. Amanda Ollerer with just 2:42 left in the match to trim the margin back to 3-2 but the Vikings couldn’t get any closer.

Dramatic finish gives Vikings 3-2 victory over St. Norbert

The Lawrence University men’s soccer team pulled out a pair of dramatic plays in the final minutes on Wednesday to post a 3-2 Midwest Conference victory over St. Norbert College at Whiting Field West.

With the game tied 2-2, Lawrence senior Vince Butitta split a pair of St. Norbert defenders and took a pass from freshman Oliver Newsom. Butitta then beat St. Norbert goalkeeper Noah Davis to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead.

Lawrence goalkeeper Taiju Oki, a freshman from Tokyo, Japan, making his first career start, was put on the spot when an inadvertent handball gave St. Norbert a penalty kick with 24.7 seconds left. Trevor Scales took the kick for the Green Knights and drove it hard to his right, but Oki made a diving save and deflected the ball away to preserve the win.

Oki finished with three saves to post his first collegiate victory.

Lawrence (3-8-0, 2-1-0 MWC) built a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first half. David Caprile put the Vikings on the board when he drilled one past Davis from about 20 yards out just 2:02 into the game.

The Vikings made it 2-0 when Butitta played a cross from Simon Newsom and scored at 37:44.

Davis then made several big saves in the second half to keep the margin at 2-0, and the Green Knights got back into the game. Tommy Purdom scored on a header at 63:23, and Paul Fischer tied it at 2-2 when he found the back of the net at 83:03. Fischer scored when a ball deflected off a Lawrence defender right to his feet in front of the net.

Davis made five saves and took the loss.

Vikings fall short against UW-Oshkosh

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The UW-Oshkosh volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory over Lawrence University on Tuesday at the UW-Stevens Point Quadrangular.

The Titans defeated the Vikings 25-21, 14-25, 25-17, 25-17.

Clare Bohrer paced the Vikings with 12 kills, and Shannon McLain added seven kills. Diane McLeod picked up 28 assists, and Kathleen Rowland had 20 digs.

Sarah Petermann led UW-Oshkosh with 13 kills.
