Vikings edged by UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season with a 5-4 nonconference defeat at UW-Eau Claire on Sunday.

The Vikings split the singles with Beth Larson winning at No. 1, Christina Schaupp winning at No. 4 and Hannah Geoffrey winning at No. 5. The Blugolds carried the day by taking two of the three doubles matches. Geoffrey and Schaupp won at No. 3 doubles for the Vikings.

Vikings battle Carroll to scoreless tie

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s soccer team battled Carroll University to a 0-0 double-overtime tie in a Midwest Conference match on Saturday at Schneider Stadium.

Carroll (2-4-1, 1-0-1 MWC) fired 19 shots, but Lawrence goalkeeper Cassie Burke made 13 saves to deliver the tie for the Vikings (2-7-1, 0-2-1). Lawrence was limited to only three shots.

Carroll shuts out Lawrence

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carroll University men’s soccer team scored a pair of late goals to pull away and posted a 4-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Schneider Stadium.

Lawrence (2-8-0, 1-1-0 MWC) was limited to only five shots, and Carroll (4-5-1, 3-0-0) fired off 16 shots.

Jordan Wickman provided all the offense Carroll would need with his goal in the 21st minute for a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers also scored in the 47th minute, the 79th minute and again with 30 seconds remaining.

Lawrence rolls past Prairie Fire

The Lawrence University volleyball team remained unbeaten in Midwest Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Knox College on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lawrence improved to 3-0 in the conference with the 25-18, 25-17, 25-12 victory.

Clare Bohrer paced Lawrence (10-9, 3-0 MWC) with 10 kills on only 16 attempts. Betsy Sorensen added nine kills on only 10 attempts. Diane McLeod picked up 29 assists and 11 digs for the Vikings, and Kathleen Rowland had a  team-high 16 digs.

Kelly Ricketts paced Knox (0-18, 0-4) with nine kills.

Lawrence bolted to an early lead in the opening set with a 10-4 lead. Knox pulled to within 16-13, but Lawrence scored seven of the next 11 points to pull away.

The Vikings led 18-15 in the second set, but Lawrence then scored the next three points to build its margin. The Prairie Fire didn’t get closer than five points after that.

Lawrence led 4-3 in the third set before scoring the next 12 points and cruising to win the set and match.

The Vikings return to action on Tuesday when they travel to the UW-Stevens Point Quadrangular.

Big second half rallies Illinois College past Vikings

The Illinois College football team scored 36 second-half points and rallied for a 54-44 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Banta Bowl.

The Blueboys (4-1, 3-1 MWC) scored touchdowns on its first two possessions of the second half and then turned a pair of interceptions into touchdowns to pull away from Lawrence (1-4, 1-3).

Michael Bates completed 27 of 42 passes for 309 yards, five touchdowns and one interception to pace Illinois College. Cecil Brimmage ran 18 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns for the Blueboys.

Lawrence quarterback Luke Barthelmess was 29 of 52 for 443 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Barthelmess also ran 21 times for 58 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Mazur caught eight passes for 126 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings, and Sam Wagner had eight catches for 94 yards and carried six times for 33 yards. Freshman receiver Dominique Dirden caught four passes for 45 yards and a career-best three touchdowns.

Lawrence jumped out to a 7-0 lead just three plays into the game. Jon Bruehl caught a 67-yard pass to set up Dirden’s eight-yard touchdown catch. The Vikings made it 13-0 when Mazur grabbed a 42-yard touchdown pass with 9:31 left in the opening quarter.

Taylor Mandich grabbed a 21-yard scoring pass for a 20-6 lead, and the Vikings made it 27-12 when Dirden caught an 18-yard touchdown pass with 2:15 left in the first half. Lawrence led 27-18 at the half.

Illinois College took the opening kickoff of the second half and went 65 yards in 10 plays to cut the lead to 27-26. Lawrence countered with a 30-yard Cody Robel field goal to increase its lead to 30-26, but the Blueboys moved 63 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown to take a 33-30 lead.

The Vikings came right back and moved 62 yards in seven plays, with Dirden catching a six-yard touchdown pass, to give Lawrence a 37-33 lead with 3:03 left in the third quarter.

Illinois College took the lead for good on Bates’ 17-yard pass to Colin Duling early in the fourth quarter for a 40-37 edge. Barthelmess was intercepted on the next drive, and Brimmage took the next play 66 yards for a touchdown and the Blueboys led 47-37.

Barthelmess was intercepted on his next pass, and the Blueboys moved 30 yards in six plays for a touchdown and a 54-37 lead. Lawrence added a touchdown on Barthelmess’ one-yard run with 4:10 left to cut the lead to 54-44 but that’s as close as the Vikings would get.

Lawrence returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Carroll University.

Vikings rally to top Grinnell

The Lawrence University volleyball team put together a key rally late in the second set and went on to a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory over Grinnell College on Friday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lawrence won 24-26, 27-25, 25-11, 25-23.

Shannon McLain and Clare Bohrer had 13 kills apiece and Emma Kane added 11 kills to pace Lawrence (9-9, 2-0 MWC). Michelle Griggs paced Grinnell (4-12, 2-1) with 17 kills. Diane McLeod posted 44 assists for the Vikings, and Kathleen Rowland had a match-high 25 digs.

After Grinnell scored the final three points to win the first set, the Pioneers led 22-20 in the second set. A kill by McLain and an attack error by the Pioneers tied the set at 22-22. The teams then traded points and the set was tied 25-25. Lawrence then got kills from Jenna Picha and Kane to win the set.

Lawrence then blitzed the Pioneers in the third set to grab the lead, but Grinnell led 18-16 in the fourth set. Lawrence reeled off five consecutive points to grab a 21-18 lead. The Pioneers battled back to tie the set at 23-23, but Lawrence got a kill from Kane and a block from Kane and Bohrer to close out the set and match.

Lawrence returns to MWC play on Saturday when it hosts Knox College.

Vikings top Grinnell in double-overtime

The Lawrence University men’s soccer team scored a goal in the second overtime to record a 2-1 Midwest Conference victory over Grinnell College on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Charlie Mann not only scored his first goal of the season for the Vikings, but it came on his first shot of the season. Mann headed a shot past Grinnell goalkeeper Ben Schemper on Cameron Pieper’s corner kick at 103:20.

Lawrence had taken a 1-0 lead on Karl Mayer’s goal in the 73rd minute, but Grinnell got a goal from Joseph Brown with just 36 seconds left in regulation to tie it.

Steve Solomon made seven saves to pick up the win for the Vikings, who enjoyed a 16-8 edge in shots.

Pioneers edge Lawrence with late goal

The Grinnell College women’s soccer team scored a goal with less than five minutes remaining and pulled out a 3-2 victory over Lawrence University in a Midwest Conference game on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Kirsten Louthan scored her first goal of the season at the 85:26 mark to break a 2-2 tie.

Lawrence had battled back from a pair of one-goal deficits. The Pioneers scored early, but Lawrence countered with Cadence Peckham’s first goal of the season at the 17:10 mark to tie the game at 1-1.

Grinnell got a goal just nine minutes later, but Lawrence tied it at 2-2 on Jennifer Angeli’s first collegiate goal in the 52nd minute.
