St. Norbert shuts out Vikings

The St. Norbert College football team used a five-minute scoring outburst in the second quarter to pull away, and the Green Knights went on to a 30-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Banta Bowl.

The Green Knights (3-1, 3-0 MWC) scored 17 points in a span of 4:55 in the second quarter to go up 24-0.

Austin Williams led St. Norbert with 15 carries for 133 yards and two touchdowns before being injured and leaving the game. Quarterback Mike Fabrizio was 22 of 37 for 260 yards and a touchdown. Joe Green caught eight passes for 80 yards and a touchdown, and Logan Krueger had seven catches for 132 yards.

Quarterback Luke Barthelmess was 15 of 31 for 206 yards for the Vikings (1-3, 1-2). Sam Wagner grabbed six passes for 79 yards to pace the Vikings.

Lawrence took the opening kickoff and drove to the St. Norbert 30 before Barthelmess was intercepted by Justin Johnson. Lawrence drove the ball into St. Norbert territory five times on the afternoon.

St. Norbert drove 86 yards in 15 plays, with Williams running in from a yard out, to grab a 7-0 lead. The score stayed that way until Sam Mason kicked a 35-yard field goal with 7:33 left in the second quarter to put St. Norbert up 10-0.

Lawrence then drove to the St. Norbert 41 but was forced to punt. Tyler Mazur’s punt was downed at the St. Norbert 2, but the Green Knights got an 82-yard touchdown run from Williams four plays later to go up 17-0.

The Green Knights then recovered an on-sides kick and scored six plays later on Fabrizio’s 12-yard pass to Green to take a 24-0 lead into the locker room.

Lawrence missed a 32-yard field goal in the final seconds of the first half.

The only score in the second half was a St. Norbert touchdown late in the game.

Linebacker Andy Paider had a career day for the Vikings with 11 tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery. Linebacker Matt Larsen added 10 tackles for the Vikings.

Green Knights top Lawrence

The St. Norbert College women’s soccer team answered every challenge by Lawrence University on Wednesday, and the Green Knights went on to a 4-2 Midwest Conference victory at Whiting Field West.

St. Norbert answered a pair of Lawrence goals with scores of its own to earn the victory.

The Green Knights scored in the fifth minute, and the score remained 1-0 until Mallory Koula took a pass from Cadence Peckham and scored for the Vikings at the 55:11 mark.

The Green Knights answered immediately with a pair of goals from Katie Vanden Avond. She scored at 57:01 and again at 58:49 to give St. Norbert a 3-1 lead.

Koula brought the Vikings back when scored at the 79:06 mark off a pass from Ellie Galvin to trim the lead to 3-2. St. Norbert answered again with a goal at 83:10 to seal the victory.

Vikings top Carroll in MWC opener

The Lawrence University volleyball team downed Carroll University 3-1 on Tuesday at Alexander Gymnasium in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams.

Lawrence (6-8, 1-0 MWC) won 25-14, 25-19, 32-34, 25-20.

Shannon McLain paced Lawrence with 20 kills and a .319 hitting percentage. Clare Bohrer added 16 kills and seven blocks for the Vikings. Diane McLeod piled up 51 assists and picked up 21 digs. Kathleen Rowland had a team-high 27 digs for the Vikings.

Lawrence’s Sam Nimmer recorded nine digs and passed 1,000 digs for her career.

Emily Cecka led Carroll (7-9, 0-1) with 14 kills, Samantha Derynda picked up 39 assists and Michelle Eberhardy had 30 digs.

Lawrence rolled through the first two sets, but Carroll survived three match points for the Vikings and came back to win the third set 34-32.

The Vikings then trailed 11-8 in the fourth set, but six of the next seven points to grab a 14-12 lead. After Carroll cut the lead to 14-13, Lawrence went on a 7-2 run to grab a 21-15 edge. The Vikings led 22-20 before three consecutive attack errors by the Pioneers gave Lawrence the win.

Vikings edge Lakeland 1-0

The Lawrence University men’s soccer team scored very late in the first half and that goal was enough as the Vikings beat Lakeland College 1-0 in a nonconference game on Sunday at Whiting Field West.

The Vikings scored with just 21 seconds left in the first half when Vince Butitta found Hashim Allah-Morad open across the field. Allah-Morad collected the pass and dribbled around Lakeland goalkeeper Alex Piekarski and buried the ball in the back of the open net. It was Allah-Morad’s first goal of the season.

The Lawrence defense posted its first shutout of the season and limited Lakeland to 11 shots. Steve Solomon made five saves to record the shutout, the third of his career.

Muchowski scores twice as Lawrence hooks Muskies

Keli Muchowski scored her first two collegiate goals to lead the Lawrence University women’s soccer team to a 4-1 nonconference victory over Lakeland College on Sunday at Whiting Field West.

Muchowski, a freshman from Neenah, Wis., gave the Vikinga a 1-0 lead when she took a corner kick and hooked it into the net at the 39:23 mark.

Muchowski scored again less than five minutes later, with just 46 seconds left in the first half, to give Lawrence a 2-0 lead at the break. Mallory Koula and Cadence Peckham picked up assists on the goal.

Koula made it 3-0 just over two minutes into the second half when she scored off passes from Natalie Jin and Anita Babbitt.

Lakeland trimmed the lead to 3-1 at the 50:37 mark, but Lawrence got that score back just six minutes later. Jin scored off a corner kick from Koula to give Lawrence a 4-1 lead at 56:33.

Cassie Burke made two saves in the first half to pick up the win. Dani Glass took over in net for the second half.

Aurora edges Vikings with late goal

The Aurora University men’s soccer team got a late goal and hung on for a 2-1 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Xavier Carrillo scored at the 73:25 mark off a pass from Matt Houghtaylen to give Aurora the 2-1 lead. Carrillo’s shot just got past a Lawrence defender, who was able to deflect it but not keep it out of the net.

Aurora took the early lead when Christian Foote scored at the 17:34 mark of the first half. Lawrence tied it when David Caprile scored his second goal of the season at the 53:27 mark.

Vikings stay unbeaten with rout of Beloit

The Lawrence University women’s tennis team stayed unbeaten with an 8-1 Midwest Conference victory over Beloit College on Saturday at the Lawrence Courts.

The Vikings improved to 8-0 and are now 1-0 in the North Division with the impressive win over the Bucs, who had been beaten only once in eight matches coming into the event.

Lawrence swept the singles matches, and the most impressive wins came from Beth Larson at No. 1 and Christina Schaupp at No. 4. Both players lost only one game en route to their wins.

Lawrence also picked up wins by Larson and Jenni Roesch at No. 1 doubles and by Schaupp and Hannah Geoffrey at No. 3 doubles.

Koula’s goal lifts Vikings past MSOE

The Lawrence University women’s soccer team got a goal from star forward Mallory Koula and that was enough to give the Vikings a 1-0 nonconference victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Koula took a pass from freshman Keli Muchowski and scored at the 31:45 mark of the first half to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

Lawrence made that stand up with seven saves from junior goalkeeper Cassie Burke. It was Burke’s first shutout of the season. Lawrence outshot the Raiders 22-16.

Scots run past Lawrence

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Alex Tanney and Trey Yocum both had big days offensively to lead the Monmouth College football team to a 56-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Zorn Stadium.

Tanney, Monmouth’s All-America quarterback, completed 25 of 30 passes for 371 yards and three touchdowns. Yocum ran 20 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns. Monmouth (2-1, 2-0 MWC) piled up 682 yards of offense.

Lawrence was limited to only 190 yards of offense and was shut out for the first time since the 2009 season.

Lawrence quarterback Luke Barthelmess was 23 of 41 for 141 yards. Tyler Mazur was the top receiver for the Vikings with seven catches for 39 yards, and Sam Wagner had six catches for 50 yards.

Monmouth scored on its first two possessions, with Yocum scoring from two yards out to make it 7-0 and Stefan Flynn grabbing a three-yard scoring pass for a 14-0 lead.

The Scots also scored on its first four possessions of the second quarter, including a 73-yard touchdown pass to Mike Blodgett, to lead 42-0 at the half.

Monmouth added a touchdown midway through the third quarter and added another score early in the fourth quarter to wrap up the scoring.

Lawrence drove into Monmouth territory eight times but couldn’t come away with any points. Lawrence’s deepest penetration on the afternoon was the Monmouth 16 early in the second quarter, but the Scots got a sack on fourth down to stop that drive.

Darvis PridGeon had nine tackles to pace the Lawrence defense, and Preston Lumzy recorded nine stops, including 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, to pace Monmouth.

Lawrence returns to action next Saturday when it hosts St. Norbert College in the Banta Bowl.

Wisconsin Lutheran downs Vikings

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Wisconsin Lutheran College men’s soccer team scored three times in the first half to take control and went on to a 4-1 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Wednesday.

Lawrence opened the scoring when David Caprile connected on a penalty kick just 4:01 into the match. Wisconsin Lutheran tied the match at the 6:21 mark and then scored in the 22nd and 24th minutes to take control.
