Vikings topple Marian

The Lawrence University volleyball team dropped the first set Wednesday night but roared back to win the next three and beat Marian University 3-1 in a nonconference match at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lawrence (1-4) won the match 20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.

Clare Bohrer paced the Vikings with 13 kills and Emma Kane added 10. Diane McLeod picked up a match-high 36 assists for Lawrence, and Kathleen Rowland piled up a match-best 22 digs.

The Vikings trailed 15-11 in the second set but scored six of the next seven points to grab a 17-16 edge. The set was tied at 22-22 before Lawrence scored the final three points.

Lawrence ripped off eight consecutive points in the third set to take control with a 21-14 lead. The Vikings then had to rally to win the fourth set. Lawrence trailed 14-11 but scored five straight points, largely behind the serving of Taylor Tomaszewski, to take a 16-14 lead. The Vikings later scored the final four points, including two on Shannon McLain service aces, to close out the set and match.

Lawrence tosses shutout at Edgewood

MADISON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team ran its shutout streak to four with a 9-0 nonconference win over Edgewood College on Monday.

The Vikings (5-0) have posted consecutive shutouts over Monmouth, Knox, Dominican (Ill.) and Edgewood.

Lawrence dropped only one set in the nine matches. Freshmen Christina Schaupp and Hannah Geoffrey completed a dominating day by both winning their second singles matches of the day by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Vikings rocket past Dominican

MADISON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team kept its perfect record unblemished on Monday with a 9-0 nonconference win over Dominican (Ill.) University.

The Vikings dropped only one set during the nine matches, and two Lawrence singles players, Christina Schaupp and Hannah Geoffrey, did not lose a game.

Cardinals edge Lawrence 2-1

The North Central College women’s soccer team scored twice in the first half and held on for a 2-1 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Sunday.

North Central (1-1-0) got on the board in the 24th minute when April Kutchinski scored off her own rebound. Lawrence goalkeeper Cassie Burke made a spectacular save on Kutchinski’s first shot, but Kutchinski corralled the rebounds and got it past Burke for a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals made it 2-0 in the 29th minute when Colleen Gebauer intercepted a Lawrence pass and scored.

The Vikings trimmed the margin to 2-1 at the 62:11 mark when Lawrence star Mallory Koula took a pass from Amanda Ollerer and beat North Central keeper Amy Frazzini.

Lawrence had several good chances in the final minutes but couldn’t get the equalizer. Frazzini made three saves to pick up the win.

Stevens wins title at St. Norbert Invitational

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Lawrence University junior Sam Stevens raced to the individual title at the St. Norbert College Tom Barry Invitational on Saturday.

Led by Stevens, Lawrence finished third in the team standings. Stevens won the event in 21:02.7, and Lawrence’s Curran Carlile also posted a top-10 finish by placing eighth in 21:49.8.

On the women’s side, Lawrence finished fourth in the team standings. Emily Muhs, back after studying abroad for much of the 2010-11 academic year, finished fifth in 20:13.6 to pace the Vikings.

Vikings fall at UWEC Classic; Bohrer picked for all-tournament team

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The Lawrence University volleyball team lost four matches at the UW-Eau Claire Labor Day Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Eau Claire and Concordia-Moorhead both defeated the Vikings 3-0 on Friday, and Carthage College and the College of St. Benedict both defeated Lawrence 3-0 on Saturday.

Lawrence’s Clare Bohrer, an Eau Claire native, was named to the all-tournament team.
