Getting Ready for the “Real World”

by Shannon Strombom on May 20, 2014

The past few weeks have brought some really exciting news….I’ve got a job! Next year I’ll be working in Milwaukee as a untitledmember of College Possible (an Americorps position) and a High School Coach. I’ll be working with up to 40 high school students from low-income poverty, helping them with ACT prep and the entire college application process. After 3 years of experience in Lawrence’s admissions office talking to prospective students and working a few summers with high schoolers at a summer camp, I’m really excited for a job that combines these experiences!

I’m super greatful to have relief from the stress that comes with being a senior who doesn’t have much of a clue where they’ll be a year from now (and believe me…most of us know that feeling). But now, the senioritis really sets in and I keep having to remind myself that I have classwork to do and preparations to make before the job starts. I have to look into buying a car, finding an apartment (and a roommate) and even studying for the LSAT I hope to take sometime in the fall. The “Real World” is exciting, but a little scary too.

In the meantime, I’m just gonna focus on the fun things and making the most out of my last month as an undergraduate! We had Greek Week last week, which is always a highlight of my spring term. We kicked it off with LipSync, where Theta did a Candyland theme. We took second, but we still rocked it! After that there was a hot wing eating contest, a synchronized swimming and crazy relay races in the pool, a field day, a basketball tournament and Theta’s own Kicks 4 CASA kickball tournament (among others!). Greek Week is our chance to create a positive image for Greek Week on campus, by inviting everyone to participate in our events while rasing money for our philanthropies and supporting other Greek organizations on campus.
