Carleton stops Lawrence in straight sets

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Carleton College volleyball team topped Lawrence University 3-0 in a nonconference match at the ACM Tournament at Macalester College.

Carleton won 25-18, 25-18, 25-14.

Cyra Bammer, Arianna Neumeyer and Megan Conley had five kills apiece to lead the Vikings (1-10). Bammer also had a team-high 16 digs, and Lauren Ray led the team with 11 assists.

Foresters topple Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lake Forest College women’s tennis team downed Lawrence University 7-2 in a Midwest Conference match on Sunday at the Lawrence Courts.

The Foresters (5-1, 3-1 MWC) started the day by sweeping the doubles and then took the top four singles matches.

Alicia Lex won posted an impressive win at No. 5 singles and El Goblirsch won in straight sets at No. 6 for the Vikings (4-4, 2-2).

Vikings edged by Macalester in five sets

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Lawrence University volleyball team dropped a five-set decision at Macalester College in the ACM Tournament on Sunday.

The Scots pulled out the victory by the scores of 22-25, 25-12, 25-14, 27-29, 16-14.

Brooke Hunter had 17 kills, and Cora Trout picked up 20 digs for the Scots (9-1).

Three players, Arianna Cohen, Arianna Neumeyer and Rachael Wuensch, had 10 kills apiece for the Vikings (1-9). Lauren Ray led Lawrence with 22 assists and 18 digs.

Vikings take team title at Ken Weidt Classic

MEQUON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s cross country team ran in a pack up front and rolled to the team title on Saturday at the Ken Weidt Classic on the Concordia University of Wisconsin campus.

The Vikings finished with 49 points to beat UW-Stevens Point by 13 points. The Pointers entered the meet ranked eighth in the Midwest Region, arguably the toughest region in the country.

Lawrence had all five of its scorers in the top 17, and Clare Bruning led the way by finishing second in 23:44.3 on the 6,000-meter course. Erin Schrobilgen was fifth in 24:18.8, Liz Landes was 10th in 24:34.2, Sierra Polzin was 15th in 24:55.3 and Margaret Huck took 17th in 25:09.2.

This was Lawrence’s first team title since the Vikings swept the team title at this meet in 2013.

On the men’s side, the Vikings finished fifth with 138 points, and UW-Stevens Point took the title with 31.

Freshman Josh Janusiak led the Vikings by taking ninth in 27:13.6 over the 8,000 meters. Rounding out the scoring for the Vikings were Ben Schaefer (25th, 28:17.7), Cam Davies (31st, 28:36.7), Jordan Atkins (35th, 28:50.6) and Mayan Essek (38th, 29:09.1).

Lawrence rolls to big win over Maranatha Baptist

WATERTOWN, Wis. — The Lawrence University football team bolted to a 24-6 lead at the half and rolled to 51-6 nonconference win over Maranatha Baptist University on Saturday.

Three Vikings (1-1) scored their first career touchdowns, and rookie Lawrence head coach Rob McCarthy picked up his first career victory.

Cam Boerm caught a pair of touchdown passes and Jacob Berman ran for a pair of scores for Lawrence. Senior running back Corey Fisher also got his first career touchdown for the Vikings.

Lawrence freshman quarterback Ryan Butterfield tossed his first two career touchdown passes and finished 6-for-11 passing for 92 yards. He also ran three times for 22 yards. Boerm finished with five catches for 61 yards, and Berman ran eight times for 88 yards and two scores.

Lawrence’s other freshman quarterback, Kemani Pittman, also was 8-for-13 and finished with 54 yards passing.

The Vikings, who finished with 420 yards of offense, limited Maranatha (0-2) to just 236 yards, including just 28 on the ground.

Junior linebacker Jacob Lueck had a team-high 10 tackles for Lawrence and that included 2.0 tackles for loss. Lueck also forced two fumbles and recovered a fumbles. Maranatha fumbled five times on the afternoon and lost all five to the Vikings. Lawrence also intercepted three passes as Hunter Adams, Wes Hetcher and Nick Ulloa all recorded picks.

Lawrence’s defense was in the backfield all afternoon as the Vikings picked up seven sacks, including 2.5 by Colt Duncan and 2.0 by Jake Gostisha.

The Vikings took advantage of a short field on its first two scoring drives to jump out to a 13-0 lead. Fisher scored on a two-yard run, and Trevor Spina scored from a yard out.

After a Maranatha touchdown cut the lead to 13-6, Lawrence scored twice in the final 2:41 of the first half. Boerm caught a 25-yard touchdown pass, and Pat O’Mahoney kicked a 27-yard field goal to give Lawrence a 24-6 lead at the half.

Dalton Sendelbach had a six-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Berman then scored on runs of 39 and 10 yards early in the fourth quarter. The Vikings added a late touchdown by Boerm to finish the scoring.

Vikings fall to Wisconsin Lutheran in double overtime

APPLETON, Wis. — Connor Schodorf scored on the 107th minute on Saturday to lift the Wisconsin Lutheran College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 nonconference win over Lawrence University in double overtime.

Schodorf’s shot came on a throw-in from Isaiah Gronholz with just three minutes left in the second overtime.

Wisconsin Lutheran (2-2-0) piled up a 22-6 edge in shots, but it was the Vikings (0-3-1) who had the better chances early in overtime. Cedric Guichard made two saves, both in the first overtime, to pick up the shutout for the Warriors.

Joe Krivit entered the match to start the second half for Lawrence and finished with eight saves. Robert Meiser got the start and made seven saves in the first half.

Dubuque edges Lawrence

DUBUQUE, Iowa — The University of Dubuque women’s soccer team scored 10 minutes into the second half and held on for a 1-0 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Saturday.

Katie Lynn scored from about 10 yards out at the 55:14 mark for the game’s lone goal.

Megan Moll picked up the shutout and was forced to make only two saves for Dubuque (3-1-1). Patsy Kealey made 11 saves for the Vikings (2-2-0).

Lawrence dumps Bucs

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team won the Nos. 3-6 singles matches and cruised to a 6-3 Midwest Conference victory over Beloit College on Saturday at the Lawrence Courts.

Lawrence (4-3, 2-1 MWC) took a 2-1 lead after the doubles as the No. 1 team of Katie Frankel and Lindsay Holsen and the No. 3 team of Shang Li and Alicia Lex were both winners.

Elana Lambert, Annie Harincar, Katie Nottberg and El Goblirsch all won in straight sets in singles to secure the victory for the Vikings.

Beloit falls to 1-6, 0-3 in the league.

Carroll tops Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. — The Carroll University women’s tennis team topped Lawrence University 7-2 in a Midwest Conference match on Saturday at the Lawrence Courts.

Top singles player Katie Frankel was unbeaten for the Vikings (3-3, 1-1 MWC) on the day. Frankel teamed with Lilly Endsley for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, and Frankel followed that with a 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Megan Krzewinski at No. 1 singles.

Carroll improved to 4-1 and 1-0 in the Midwest Conference.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The St. Olaf College volleyball team downed Lawrence University 3-0 in a nonconference match on Saturday at the ACM Tournament at Macalester College.

The Oles won by the scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-18.

Arianna Cohen paced Lawrence with six kills, and Megan Conley and Rachael Wuensch had four apiece. Sydney Nelson led the Vikings with 14 kills, and Cyra Bammer picked up 16 digs.
