Lawrence men second, women seventh at MWC Championships

MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Lawrence University men’s cross country team took second place on Saturday at the Midwest Conference Championships and placed three runners on the all-conference team.

The second-place finish for the Vikings was their highest placement since taking second in 1989.

Leading the charge for Lawrence was sophomore Sam Stevens, who placed third in 25:48.34. Stevens made the all-conference team for the second consecutive season.

Freshman Curran Carlile was seventh in 25:58.77 and was all-conference as well. Senior David Zane took 11th in 26:07.02 and earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career.

The Lawrence women placed seventh and were led by junior Emily Muhs. Muhs took seventh in 23:21.98 and picked up a spot on the all-conference team for the second consecutive season.

Grinnell won the men’s team championship and St. Norbert took the women’s title.

Stevens, Muhs pace Vikings at Brooks Invitational

WINNECONNE, Wis. – Sam Stevens and Emily Muhs led the Lawrence University cross country team at Saturday’s UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational at Lake Breeze Golf Club.

Stevens finished 78th and covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:52. The Lawrence men finished 23rd among the 37 teams.

Muhs was 113th and clocked a time of 23:59 on the 6,000-meter course. The Lawrence women were 31st among the 36 teams.

Carlile picks up MWC weekly cross country award

Lawrence University cross country standout Curran Carlile has been named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week.

Carlile (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic), a freshman, won his second individual title of the season as he raced to victory at Lawrence’s Gene Davis Invitational on Oct. 9.

Carlile covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:22.89 to beat Carthage College’s Jake Mahaffey by almost five seconds. Carlile, who also won the Tom Barry Invitational to start the season, pulled away from a pair of Carthage runners over the final 500 meters to set a course record at Reid Golf Course.

Led by Carlile, the Vikings placed second in the team standings.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis.

Muhs, Carlile take individual crowns, Lawrence women win team title at Gene Davis Invitational

Lawrence University cross country standouts Emily Muhs and Curran Carlile won the individual titles, and the Lawrence women took the team title at Saturday’s Gene Davis Invitational at Reid Golf Course.

Muhs covered the 6,000-meter course in 19:40.71 to win her first collegiate title by 59 seconds over Emily Barker of Mount Mary. Lawrence’s Annie Sullivan was third and Mary Kate Smith grabbed fourth. The Vikings rounded out their scoring with Alyssa Herman taking seventh and Amanda Dwyer grabbing 12th.

Lawrence won the team title with 26 points and UW-Whitewater was second with 49.

Carlile won his second event of the season and covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:22.89. Sam Stevens ran to a fifth-place finish and David Zane took sixth for the Vikings. Finishing the scoring for Lawrence were Tom Coben in 17th and Sam Estrem in 18th.

The Vikings finished second with 47 points, and Carthage took the team title with 32 points.

The event is named for legendary Lawrence coach Gene Davis, who coached the Vikings from 1956-91.

Carlile, Stevens race to great finishes at Griak

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Freshman Curran Carlile and sophomore Sam Stevens raced to finishes in the top 30 to lead the Lawrence University cross country teams at the University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday.

Carlile finished 19th in a time of 26:32.2 on the 8,000-meter course. It was the highest finish ever by a Lawrence runner at the Griak Invitational. Stevens was only eight seconds behind Carlile and finished 27th in 26:40.2.

Led by that duo, Lawrence finished 12th among the 30 teams.

On the women’s side, Lawrence was 23rd among the 32 teams. Emily Muhs paced the Vikings by finishing 40th on the 6,000-meter course in 24:02.8.

Muhs runs to MWC cross country award

Muhs (Janesville, Wis./Craig) raced to a career-best fourth-place finish at the UW-Whitewater Invitational this past Saturday. Muhs ran to a time of 24 minutes, 17 seconds, on the difficult 6,000-meter course.

Led by Muhs, an All-Midwest Conference honoree last season, Lawrence took fourth place in the team standings.

This is the first time a Lawrence women’s runner has been named cross country performer of the week since Colleen Detjens took home the award on Oct. 11, 2005.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota.

Muhs, Carlile pace Vikings at UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Lawrence University men’s and women’s cross country teams both placed fourth at the UW-Whitewater Invitational on Saturday.

Emily Muhs paced all Lawrence runners by taking fourth place. She covered the 6,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 17 seconds. On the men’s side, Curran Carlile raced to fifth place. He finished the 8,000-meter course in 26:54.

Carlile runs to Midwest Conference cross country award

Lawrence University’s Curran Carlile has been named the Midwest Conference Men’s Cross Country Performer of the Week after a sterling start to his collegiate career.

Running in his first race, Carlile (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) ran to victory at the St. Norbert College Tom Barry Invitational. Carlile covered the four-mile course at Colburn Park in 20 minutes, 50.1 seconds. Led by Carlile, the Vikings tied for the team title with 66 points.

Carlile is the first Lawrence men’s runner to win the conference performer of the week award since it was established in 2004. His race victory was the first by a Lawrence men’s runner since Eric Davis won the Northland Baptist Bible College Invitational in 2001. The team victory also was the first since the Northland Baptist meet in 2001.

The Vikings return to action on Sept. 18 when they compete at the UW-Whitewater Warhawk Invitational.

Vikings sweep individual, team honors at St. Norbert Invitational

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s cross country team won the title at the St. Norbert College Tom Barry Invitational on Saturday, and freshman Curran Carlile was the top collegiate finisher in his first race for the Vikings.

Carlile, a freshman from Portland, Ore., covered the four-mile course at Colburn Park in 20 minutes, 50.1 seconds. Lawrence sophomore Sam Stevens, a Suamico, Wis., native running in his backyard, finished right behind Carlile at 20:55.1 to complete a 1-2 sweep for the Vikings.

Lawrence tied for the team title with 66 points with St. Norbert and Ripon College. It was the first men’s invitational team title since the Vikings won the Northland Baptist Bible College Invitational in 2001. That meet also marked the last time a Lawrence men’s runner won a race as well.

On the women’s side, junior Emily Muhs paced the Vikings by taking fifth place in 19:25.2 on the 5,000-meter course. Led by Muhs, the Vikings placed seventh in the team standings.
