Barthelmess, Mazur named to BSN Team of the Week

Lawrence University football standouts Luke Barthelmess and Tyler Mazur have been chosen for the Beyond Sports College Network Team of the Week.

Barthelmess (Dow, Ill./Principia) and Mazur (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg) both had record-setting games in Lawrence’s 62-42 Midwest Conference victory at Knox College on Sept. 10.

Barthelmess, a sophomore quarterback, completed 28 of 39 passes for 549 yards and six touchdowns. He also ran 18 times for 45 yards and two touchdowns.

Mazur, a junior wide receiver/quarterback, caught eight passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns. Mazur also had one carry for three yards and a touchdown.

Barthelmess’ 549 passing yards broke the Midwest Conference record of 532, which was set by Knox’s Bob Monroe back in 1986. It also shattered the Lawrence record of 466, which was set by Lawrence Hall of Famer Bill McNamara vs. Coe College in 1986. The six touchdown passes broke the Lawrence record of five, which was set by Eric Aspenson vs. Knox in 2007.

Mazur’s five touchdowns set a Lawrence record, breaking the mark of four, which was held by four players. Mazur also finished with 30 points, which breaks the Lawrence record of 25, which was set by Carl Stumpf vs. Ripon College in 1953.

Mazur’s four touchdown catches ties the Lawrence record, which was set by Zach Michael against St. Norbert College in 2003. The 220 receiving yards is the fourth-highest total in Lawrence history, trailing only Michael (279), Ron Wopat (241) and Paul Gebhardt (227).

Lawrence (1-1, 1-0 MWC) returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Monmouth College.

Barthelmess, Robel pick up Player of the Week awards

Lawrence University football players Luke Barthelmess and Cody Robel have been chosen as Midwest Conference Players of the Week.

Barthelmess (Dow, Ill./Principia) was the Offensive Player of the Week and Robel (Appleton, Wis./West) was the Special Teams Player of the Week. Both players had big games in Lawrence’s 62-42 victory at Knox College on Sept. 10.

Barthelmess broke a Midwest Conference record and two Lawrence records in Lawrence’s win at Knox. Barthelmess completed 28 of 39 passes for a Lawrence and MWC record 549 yards. Barthelmess broke the MWC passing yards record of 532, set by Knox’s Bob Monroe in 1986, and the Lawrence record of 466, set by Bill McNamara in 1986. Barthelmess’ six touchdown passes also broke the Lawrence record of five, set by Eric Aspenson in 2007.

Barthelmess also ran 18 times for 45 yards and two touchdowns.

Robel tied a pair of Lawrence records with eight PATs in the victory at Knox. Robel was 8-for-8 on extra points and tied the school record for PAT attempts and conversions. Robel is now 9-for-9 on PATs this season.

Lawrence (1-1, 1-0 MWC), which piled up 656 yards of offense at Knox, returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Monmouth College.

Barthelmess’ record day leads Vikings past Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. — Lawrence University quarterback Luke Barthelmess had a record-setting day throwing the football on Saturday to lead the Vikings to a 62-42 victory over Knox College in the Midwest Conference opener at the Knosher Bowl.

Barthelmess was 28 of 39 for 549 yards and six touchdowns to pace the Vikings (1-1, 1-0 MWC). Barthelmess broke the MWC single-game passing record of 532 yards, set by Knox’s Bob Monroe in 1986. He shattered the Lawrence record of 466, set by Lawrence Hall of Famer Bill McNamara vs. Coe College in 1986. The six touchdown passes breaks the Lawrence record of five, set by Eric Aspenson vs. Knox in 2007.

Barthelmess’ favorite target on the afternoon was Tyler Mazur, who caught eight passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns. Mazur’s four TD catches ties the Lawrence record set by Zach Michael vs. St. Norbert College in 2003. Jon Bruehl added four catches for 109 yards, and Taylor Mandich had seven catches for 92 yards.

The 62 points is the third-highest point total by the Vikings in the modern era of Lawrence football. The record is 67, which was set vs. Knox (0-2, 0-1) in 1981. The Vikings scored 64 against Cornell College in 1953 and hit 62 vs. Ripon College in 1953 and vs. the University of Chicago in 1977.

Lawrence kicker Cody Robel also tied the record for PATs with eight. The mark was set by Kraig Krueger vs. Knox in 1981.

Lawrence piled up 656 yards of offense, including 573 through the air.

The Vikings trailed 14-13  after the teams traded first-quarter touchdowns, but Lawrence started to take control in the second quarter. Mazur caught a 92-yard touchdown pass just 19 seconds into the second quarter to give Lawrence a 20-14 edge. Mandich then capped a nine-play, 90-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown catch with 9:49 left in the first half. Bruehl then made it 34-14 with 5:13 left in the opening half with a 30-yard touchdown catch.

The Vikings led 34-21 at the half and scored the first two touchdowns of the second half. Mazur had a 14-yard touchdown catch and three-yard TD run to give Lawrence a 48-21 lead with 5:23 left in the third quarter.

The teams then traded touchdowns the rest of the way, with Mazur grabbing a 72-yard touchdown catch and Barthelmess running 20 yards for a score.

The Lawrence defense picked up three interceptions on day as Robbie Ulloa, Mats Jonsson and Shawn Martin all recorded picks. Defensive end Nick Randall had a team-high nine tackles for the Vikings.

Inside LU Athletics: Women’s tennis off to hot start

It’s one thing to have lofty goals, but it’s quite another to have the talent to make those goals a reality.

The Lawrence University women’s tennis team has some big goals for this season, but the Vikings may just have the talent to pull it off. Led by a solid group of returning players and an influx of talented newcomers, the Vikings are off to a 5-0 start.

“We want to make a pretty good dent at the (Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional) later this month and let other schools know that we’re not messing around,” Lawrence coach Kevin Girard said. “After that, our goal is to win the Midwest Conference and make the NCAAs.”

Lawrence, which hasn’t won a MWC title since taking back-to-back crowns in 1985 and 1986, finished fourth in the league a season ago. The Vikings also captured the No. 1 doubles title with Beth Larson and Jennifer Roesch. Along with Larson at No. 1 singles and Roesch at No. 2, the Vikings also returned Gayatri Malhotra at No. 3 singles and Carla Schmidt at No. 4.

Three newcomers, freshmen Christina Schaupp and Hannah Geoffrey and sophomore Polly Dalton, have taken over the bottom half of the lineup.

“Once our recruiting class was established, Beth, Jenni and Guyatri worked pretty hard over the summer because they knew they were going to have to fight for their spots in the lineup.” Girard said. “The freshmen have pushed the upperclassmen and vice versa. It’s worked out pretty well. It’s a good dynamic.”

Schaupp, a former star at Green Bay Notre Dame, Geoffrey, Larson and Malhotra have yet to lose a singles match this season. Schaupp, who was named the MWC Player of the Week, has also teamed with Geoffrey for a 4-0 record in doubles.

“I knew we had a good squad going in, but I didn’t know what to expect from the newcomers,” Girard said. “We’re looking pretty good. I’m excited.”

The Vikings have a total of seven new players on the squad, and Girard said he would be confident putting anyone in the lineup.

“When we did challenge matches, they all beat each other up,” Girard said. “It’s not just those three (Schaupp, Geoffrey and Dalton) – we definitely get pushed from the back end and work our way up. They’re all very talented. It’s a nice lineup.”

Girard’s team sent a statement in the first match of the season with 5-4 victory at Carthage College, a team that has won three College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin titles in the last decade. It was Schaupp who clinched the victory by winning a three-set match at No. 4 singles.

“It meant a lot,” Girard said of the win over Carthage. “It’s the first time I’ve played Carthage since I’ve been here. … It was nice to go in there and sneak out a victory.”

And the opposition definitely took notice. It was the first thing out of Edgewood College coach Ben Oestreich’s mouth when the Vikings traveled there a few days later.

“We went to play Edgewood, and their coach said, ‘I see you guys knocked off Carthage,’ ” Girard said. “It’s all good. We’ve got to beat the teams we’re playing right now and our goal is still to win the conference.”

A helping hand

When storms ravaged large parts of Appleton on Sept. 2, the Lawrence football team turned out to lend a hand.

About 25 members of the football squad responded to a volunteering opportunity to clean up limbs and brush near the campus. The Vikings were able to help clean up the yards of about 15 homes in the areas around the campus.

“We know that some of the people we met had never been to a LU game, but they will be there (in the future),” said senior defensive lineman Eric Follett.

Stevens runs to honor

Lawrence cross country star Sam Stevens was named the MWC Performer of the Week after winning the St. Norbert College Tom Barry Invitational on Sept. 3.

The junior from Suamico covered the four-mile course at Colburn Park in 21:02.7 and won by 13 seconds. It was the first individual title for Stevens, who has earned All-MWC honors in each of his first two seasons. Stevens led Lawrence to a third-place finish in the team standings.

Vikings topple Marian

The Lawrence University volleyball team dropped the first set Wednesday night but roared back to win the next three and beat Marian University 3-1 in a nonconference match at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lawrence (1-4) won the match 20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.

Clare Bohrer paced the Vikings with 13 kills and Emma Kane added 10. Diane McLeod picked up a match-high 36 assists for Lawrence, and Kathleen Rowland piled up a match-best 22 digs.

The Vikings trailed 15-11 in the second set but scored six of the next seven points to grab a 17-16 edge. The set was tied at 22-22 before Lawrence scored the final three points.

Lawrence ripped off eight consecutive points in the third set to take control with a 21-14 lead. The Vikings then had to rally to win the fourth set. Lawrence trailed 14-11 but scored five straight points, largely behind the serving of Taylor Tomaszewski, to take a 16-14 lead. The Vikings later scored the final four points, including two on Shannon McLain service aces, to close out the set and match.
