Vikings again stymied in MWC quarterfinals

MADISON, Wis. — All six Lawrence University singles players couldn’t advance past Sunday’s quarterfinals at the Midwest Conference Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Vikings played without top singles player Katie Frankel so the rest of the team was forced to move up one flight.

Lilly Endsley played No. 1 and downed Carroll’s Megan Krzewinski 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the opening round. Endsley was then eliminated in the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-0 loss to eventual champion Billie Rodman of Lake Forest.

At No. 2, Lindsay Holsen dominated Ripon’s Courtney Olson 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round but then lost to St. Norbert’s Erika Chitko 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Elana Lambert downed Lisa Noggle of Illinois College 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round at No. 3. St. Norbert’s Katlyn Gahan then stopped Lambert 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Annie Harincar defeated Maddie Schacht of Knox 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round at No. 4. Harincar then fell 6-1, 6-0 to Lake Forest’s Allison Watts in the quarterfinals.

At No. 5, El Goblirsch was an easy 6-0, 6-1 winner over Beloit’s Nyasha Nyamhondoro in the first round. Alison Lambrecht of Carroll then downed Goblirsch 6-0, 6-2 in the quarters.

Cassandra Li jumped in at No. 6 for the Vikings and downed Carly Wesner of Ripon 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round. Catherine Schaupp then defeated Li in the quarterfinals.

Vikings can’t get past quarters in MWC doubles

MADISON, Wis. — Lawrence University couldn’t get a doubles team past the quarterfinals during Saturday’s competition at the Midwest Conference Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

At No. 1, the team of Katie Frankel and Lilly Endsley fell 8-1 to St. Norbert in the championship quarterfinals. Endsley and Frankel bounced back to beat Katherine Hinman and Liddy Wilson of Monmouth 8-2 in the consolation semifinals. Cornell’s Sophie Robertson and Shashanna Moll then downed Endsley and Frankel 8-3 in the consolation final.

Lindsay Holsen and Elana Lambert won their opening match at No. 2 8-3 over Beloit, but the Vikings dropped an 8-2 decision to St. Norbert in the championship quarterfinals and were eliminated.

Annie Harincar and Katie Nottberg also posted an 8-3 win at No. 3 over a team from Beloit. Harincar and Nottberg were then eliminated with an 8-1 loss to Carroll in the quarterfinals.

The singles competition takes place on Sunday.

Endsley grabs MWC Player of the Week honors

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University women’s tennis player Lilly Endsley has been named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week after a compiling a perfect record.

Endsley (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) won the honor after posting a 6-0 mark on the week as Lawrence swept three Midwest Conference road matches.

In winning three matches at No. 2 singles, Endsley dropped just 10 games total. She posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory in Lawrence’s 7-2 win at Knox College on Oct. 10. Endsley then won 6-3, 6-2 in Lawrence’s 5-4 win at Monmouth College on Oct. 10. She capped the weekend with a 6-1, 6-3 win at Illinois College as the Vikings won 7-2 on Oct. 11.

Playing No. 1 doubles with Katie Frankel, Endsley also went 3-0 with an 8-1 win at Knox, an 8-2 win at Monmouth and an 8-3 win at Illinois College.

Endsley improved to 9-8 in singles and 10-7 in doubles on the season. This is the first time Endsley has won the conference Player of the Week honor. Endsley is the first player honored by the league since Gayatri Malhotra won the award on Sept. 12, 2012.

Lawrence completed the Midwest Conference season with a 5-5 record and finished sixth in the league.

Lawrence, which is 10-8 overall, wraps up the fall season this weekend when it plays in the Midwest Conference Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.

Lawrence pummels Lady Blues

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team swept the doubles action on Sunday and rolled to a 7-2 Midwest Conference win over Illinois College.

The Vikings (10-8, 5-5 MWC) completed Midwest Conference play this weekend with three consecutive victories. In addition to defeating Illinois College, Lawrence topped Knox and Monmouth on Saturday.

The Vikings began the match against the Lady Blues (2-11, 1-9) by winning all three doubles contests. Katie Frankel and Lilly Endsley were 8-3 winners at No. 1, Lindsay Holsen and Elana Lambert won 8-6 at No. 2 and Annie Harincar and Katie Nottberg won 8-1 at No. 3.

Lawrence wrapped up the match with four singles victories as Endsley (No. 2), Holsen (No. 3), Harincar (No. 5) and El Goblirsch (No. 6) all won in straight sets.

Harincar’s win lifts Vikings past Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Annie Harincar’s comeback victory at No. 5 singles lifted the Lawrence University women’s tennis team to a 5-4 Midwest Conference victory at Monmouth College on Saturday afternoon.

Harincar defeated Katy Tolsky 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and gave Lawrence (9-8, 4-5 MWC) the victory.

Lawrence started the match in the hole after dropping two of the three doubles matches. The Vikings’ lone win was an 8-2 victory by Katie Frankel and Lilly Endsley at No. 1 doubles.

The Vikings then stormed back in the singles matches as Frankel won at No. 1, Endsley followed with a victory at No. 2 and Lindsay Holsen won in straight set at No. 3 to put Lawrence up 4-2.

The Scots (3-10, 3-6) then won at Nos. 4 and 6 to tie the match at 4-4 before Harnicar rallied to win her match.

Lawrence rolls past Prairie Fire

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team rolled to an 8-1 Midwest Conference victory over Knox College on Saturday.

The Vikings (8-8, 3-5 MWC) started the morning with a sweep of the doubles competition. Lawrence dropped just seven games in taking all three matches.

The Vikings were a super-tiebreaker away from sweeping the singles matches as well. Katie Frankel at No. 1, Lilly Endsley at No. 3, Lindsay Holsen at No. 3 and El Goblirsch at No. 6 all won in straight sets, and Annie Harincar won a super-tiebreaker of her own for a victory at No. 5.

Both Endsley and Goblirsch lost just one game in impressive victories.

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College women’s tennis team posted a 9-0 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University on Sunday.

Grinnell improves to 7-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference. Lawrence falls to 7-8, 2-5 in the league.

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The Cornell College women’s tennis team dominated the singles play and rolled to an 8-1 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday.

The Rams (5-4, 4-1 MWC) swept the singles matches, and the lone victory for Lawrence (7-7, 2-4) came at No. 3 doubles. Annie Harincar and Katie Nottberg posted an 8-6 victory over Abby Bridgett and Janice Elkerton.

Endsley’s victory lifts Vikings over UW-Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Lilly Endsley’s win at No. 2 singles was the decisive point as the Lawrence University women’s tennis team topped UW-Stevens Point in a nonconference match on Saturday.

The match was tied 4-4 when Endsley posted a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 win over Emily Kleist. Endsley won the super-tiebreaker 10-6 to claim the victory.

Lawrence (7-6) grabbed a 2-1 lead after the doubles play as Endsley and Katie Frankel won at No. 1 and Lindsay Holsen and Elana Lambert were winners at No. 2.

El Goblirsch rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to push Lawrence’s lead to 3-1. After a pair of wins by the Pointers (3-4) tied it, Lambert finished off a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 to give Lawrence a 4-3 edge. The Pointers then tied it with a win at No. 1 singles before Endsley finished off her victory to claim the match.

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team won the top two singles matches, but Bethel University posted a 7-2 nonconference win over the Vikings on Saturday at UW-Stevens Point.

Lawrence’s top singles player, Katie Frankel, was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Mattie Kidder. Lilly Endsley posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Anna Browning for the Vikings (6-6) at No. 2.

Bethel (2-0) took control of the match early by sweeping the three doubles matches.
